Broken ankle and shoes

After my broken ankle cast came off , all that I could get my foot into was a sandal with the straps let out fully ! , slippers are a nono ! it wasn't long till I could fasten the sandal more or less properly , Are you doing your exercises ? that keeps the swelling down to a degree

Thanks aggie. I am still in the cast, having graduated to a below the knee cast from a thigh to toe after three weeks. My foot didn't look that swollen but was still very bruised when I saw it then. Looks like my Teva walking sandals then!

I had a rally badly broken ankle in my 30's and ended up in plaster for 24 weeks. When the plaster came off I was unable to move the ankle at all but did hydrotherapy at home as suggested by my Gp and gradually managed to get the ankle back to normal. I didn't have any swelling though and could wear trainers as soon as the plaster came off.

I broke my ankle and metatarsal in June, in aircast for 8 weeks. I have found that trainers are supportive and comfortable, as you can have the laces as lose or tight as you need. Definitely not slippers or slip on's though.

If they offer you hydrotherapy please take it, it made all the difference to my recovery.

Thanks GrannyGravy might get some velcro trainers for slippers then. This being France I am sure there will be unlimited physio, but will try for aquagym as well.

When I said exercises I did mean in the cast , maybe they are so simple you didn't think of the movements suggested as exercises ? still important , bend toes down and press up , press foot down against cast etc , sitting in chair lift lower leg up straightening knee etc , believe me the ankle will swell once the support of the cast is removed , but you will get advice , and , hopefully a leaflet

Years ago for me now, but I remember there was minimal swelling when the cast was cut off and I used an ordinary sandal to get home. The swelling started a couple of days afterwards but the exercises and elevation got it down again pdq.

Oh yes aggie I have been doing that. We don't seem to get leaflets here, but I had daily visits from the district nurses for three weeks. I imagine I will get at least twice weekly physio, my OH has been going for months for shoulder pain.
Thanks Izabella that sounds encouraging. I lost a lot of fitness and leg muscle in the long cast, so I think it will be hard work.

Yes the physio here in France is excellent Mamie I had 10 sessions last year after I fractured my pelvis. A very nice young man and electrodes in my knickers what could be better ?

My OH likes it sodapop because he meets the same little group each time. ?
