FC61 I've read a bit about the private health insurance companies in America. It seems to be a lottery whether they cover you or not for a certain condition.
How do you know they've bought up GP surgeries?
As for where we live, the NHS still gives reasonable service, TG. And it's not a wealthy area.
EllaV - yes, I am fully aware- my point is- where do you start saying 'your fault, we are not treating you'? Cycling, skiing, bacon sarnies, watching too much TV... smoking is the obvious one, and so is obesity and Type 2 diabetes- but can you imagine turning up in Casualty - and they would turn you away if you happen to do anything in life which is not 100% 'healthy' ?!?
I see the US Ambassador is expecting the NHS to be up for grabs.

I'm by no means stupid, but I happen to be a smoker and am fully aware of the hazards involved but I wouldn't go moaning or complaining to the first GP/hospital saying it was their fault for not treating any smoke-related complaint. It's NOT my right to since I chose to smoke.
Understand what I'm saying ? The same goes for the others you mentioned, nobody tells you to do these things !

Sorry forgot to say, IMO a lot of people who voted for Brexit in the recent election probably wouldn’t in a general election. This was a protest vote by the voters who voted for Brexit.
They were backed into a corner really, wanted to show their anger with the cons. and labs. Couldn’t vote for the greens or Lib Dem’s because they had declared that a vote for them was a vote to remain.
Nonnie, I was talking yesterday to a friend in the medical profession and asked her the same question.
I take your point that you restrict your intake but perhaps, like me, you evaluated your situation and took control. Because I tend to be quite strong and in control of myself I find it hard to understand why some people don’t seem to be able to but there it is. They don’t.
Some people find this difficult and with medications such as steroids which apparently make you feel as though you are starving it must be hard. However patients aren’t usually on steroids for very long.
I tend to feel that we ask such a lot of our health service and a wide range of people wantonly play havoc with their health.
Jura- I picked on the obese because they seem to be in the forefront of the medical problems at the moment. Smoking is more dangerous to health but at least they pay quite a lot of tax!( sorry) .
The Times today says that success in tackling tobacco combined with the failure against obesity means that weight now rivals smoking as a public health challenge.
Perhaps if more time was given to these patients there could be a better outcome and perhaps this advice and help can be given by staff that haven’t got full medical qualifications.

Agreed- and yet. What about smokers, what about those who eat too much red and processed meats, what about mountain climbers or those who drive a motorbike , etc, etc, etc.

I read an article in the Times the other week about a French mayor. He had declared that it was now a crime to be ill in his area because they have a huge shortage of GP’s.!!
Life isn’t perfect anywhere and we are better off than a lot of places.
I do understand that we could probably do better and it would be extremely helpful if a vast portion of our population played their part in looking after their health.
I, for one, would rather our money was spent on people that were in need of medical care than on huge furniture and vehicles for hugely obese people.

Ellan I have had 2 NHS dentists in the last 11 years. Couldn't get one when I lived in London but have found it really easy since.
Not only hospitals /consultants, try and find an NHS dentist, they've all but disappeared since the early 2000's and look at the prices that people DO and WILL pay for dental treatment but we don't hear much about that sector of the health system !
The standard technique for privatisation is very well known, and has been for a very long time- so how people cannot see it is beyond me. And it is so so simple

And add another element short-term, glimpses via access for 'ordinary people' to much better private healthcare - as has happened in recent years in the UK. Offer NHS operations in a over-stressed NHS in private sector- and create a wish list in the minds of people, and a second tier system in their mind, to which they, the chosen few, have access by the back door if not the front. And with so called NHS Consultants creaming the system- eg working part time for private- making a lot of money in private- often using NHS facilities for private work by all sorts of subterfuges, and then return to NHS any serious problem or when the lucrative part has gone.
I have seen the video of NF talking about privatising the NHS and am really surprised that any prolific poster on the political sites hasn't seen it. Denying that he said that is very head in the sand. But then Urmston you did say a week or so back that the £ was going up and didn't apologise when I showed you that you were mistaken. It all affects your credibility.
It worries me that every time someone points out what may happen after Brexit the Brexiteers just choose to ignore it and call it scare mongering or Project Fear. Are they really not aware that we will be short of nurses, of crop gatherers, that small businesses will fail, medicines will be hard to come by to name just a few things which could happen or are they just so keen on kicking the foreigners out because that is what it would seem this is all about.
Our NHS does their utmost in keeping people alive whatever their age/status and will continue doing so no matter what happens in the future.
You've only to watch programmes about " What's your emergency and Ambulances " etc-----their work isn't going to stop overnight because a handful of people choose to listen/read about such propaganda, which is what this " health stuff " is all about. Dangerous ! Fake news !

I don’t believe it’s scaremongering. American health insurance companies are already buying up parts of NHS. They have already bought GP surgeries and closed them down because unprofitable. Look up 38 degrees petitions to find out what American firms have planned for a no deal! Farage is going to be a very rich man if he manages to open the door ! We will be the losers. Same with fracking - looks like English company but then you find out as I did 51% is invested by New York firm.
The NHS has fallen apart. Short-staffed, short of funds, elderly care, disabled care, social care , all horrifying reports. Doctors leaving the country at an alarming rate, GP Practices closing or clustering. Cannot get appointments while ill.
To my mind, most of the rot came during Jeremy Hunt's watch....suitable to lead the Government?????
