Morning, everyone.
This is just a quick post as a sequel to my OP of I need help!

Last night I went to a local AA meeting. Everyone was so welcoming, that my nerves soon disappeared and I felt like I was with friends.
The man in charge told me to just listen to stories, not to compare but to see if I could identify. I learned so much in those 90 minutes.
1) I don't have to drink. Just because it's Friday, Saturday, Wimbledon's on or whatever, I don't have to drink.
2) I have a problem with alcohol because the first is never enough. I have to carry on. It doesn't relax me or make me happy. In fact, it does the opposite. Talk about a Lightbulb moment. It's not my friend, and it never was.
3) Not only is it an illness, but it's a progressive one - it will only get worse, not better.

I did learn so much more, but wanted to keep this relatively short. I am aware that the road ahead may be challenging at times, but thanks to you and your encouraging, honest and non judgmental posts, I am feeling optimistic.
I will take one day at a time. For today I will not drink.
I will get back to you all in a few weeks.
Thanks again - you are all amazing x

Well done OP. A close friend of mine is an alcoholic who will not get help and it breaks my heart to see the lovely, caring person she is disappearing. I wish you well.

I'm so pleased that you have taken the first step.. There may be days when you give in to temptation, but don't let that make you give up. Look on it as a slight trip-up, not a catastrophic fall.
Having friends to support you is half the battle, so keep us posted on your progress.

That’s brilliant - it took guts for you seek help and it is a vauable lesson to everyone who seeks to change - you have to make the first steps yourself x

Well done Esmenonna I bet your family will be overjoyed! (We certainly were when my FIL embraced AA).

Look for #recoveryposse on Twitter if you like, they are brilliant. Here's one of their posts smile

Good luck and a big pick-you-up-off-your-feet hug!

Esmenonna - Do you use Facebook? If so there's a group on there called Club Soda for those of us (yes me too) dealing with alcohol. Some are trying to moderate, some to quit altogether. It's a closed group - for privacy - so you'd have to apply to join but it's wonderfully supportive and friendly.

What a positive post smile. Well done, a brave and so important a step. You want to succeed so I’m sure you will a step (with the odd trip) at a time.

Well done you Esmenonna it must have taken a lot of courage.
I used to drink wine every night - it helped me relax when I was caring for aged parents but when I was diagnosed with cancer I cut it out altogether. It is easier when you have a reason I think.
