Does anyone have experience of these apps and have any they can recommend for a beginner?

Try Headspace. The narrator has a nice voice (British) and is a good introduction to mindfulness. There are some little clips to watch and then you can just listen through headphones to his directions.

Headspace. Free at first then £60 p.a. I know quite a few people using it, along with citalopram, cognitive behaviour therapy and sertraline.

Is life in general more stressy these days or is it just more acceptable to talk about mental health issues?

Got to be better, the lack of stigma.

Years ago there were ‘mother’s little helpers’ aka Valium! Pretty much banned nowadays because of addiction issues.

I'm not familiar with the app but I am familiar with the practice- One of my favorite dharma talks is called True Insight given by Genjo Marinello, the abbot at Chobo-Ji in Seattle- He's a psychotherapist by profession-

But he doesn't have a British accent ..
