Flaking nail cuticle

Hi, I've had poor nail beds under both my thumb nails for at least 12 years, right thumb nail is worse than the left, to the point half way down the nail it dips as if it's been gouged out and is discoloured. I've added photos, though the acrylics I now have applied covered this to some degree, but it's still noticeable, it at least now is rounded and smooth.

At the nail root or nail fold (not sure what it is), where the cuticle can just be seen appearing, the cuticle is flaking. I started using 'nailner' anti-fungal, thinking this was the issue, but months later, it's no different. Because of my job I started getting acrylics on, to cover my embarrassing nails, which has covered the issue half way down the nail. My cuticles are still flaking just as they are starting to show, so I started using cuticle oil at night, but there is no change. Anyone any ideas as to what is causing this continually and how to stop it?

Thanks for any advice smile

Sorry to hear of your problem. I'm a great believer in leaving the nails to recover themselves, only using oils or creams to moisten them. All I can say is that my nails used to split and break when I used nail varnish but have been perfect since I stopped. I presume it was the nail varnish but can't be certain. I would never have acrylics or do anything that might damage my nails because I believe they need to breathe.

If you have a dip could that be from an injury? Sometimes the nail bed will never recover from injuries.

You may find some helpful information from Dr Google, as there is a lot there about nails, or at least it may direct you to a nail doctor or specialist if you feel you need professional advice or treatment. Sorry I can't give any specific advice for your problem.

Just to add that cuticles vary from person to person. I have virtually no cuticles but I knew someone whose cuticles grew right across her nails which was awful. They had to be lifted and hacked off with nippers but just grew back again. The problem was made worse because she bit her nails and I think that makes the cuticles grow more. So I suspect that cuticle growth may be an attempt to protect your nails. Just my theory. Get a professional opinion to be certain.
