Hi Gransnetters

I am post menopausal and have recently started having hot flashes again at night and some during the day. Has anyone else had this after going though the menopause... is it normal?

I started having night sweats 4 months ago at age 66.
Blood tests et all fine ?

CanadianGran My old boy jokes that one day he’ll look for me and just find a puddle on the floor, where I have eventually just melted away!

15 years for me as well. It's not as bad as it was but I still do get sweaty a few times a night. For quite a few years it was all day and night. I kept saying to my DH that one day he would look for me and find my charred slippers by my chair and a smoke stain on the ceiling!

It is somewhat reassuring to know I am not alone, since my friends don't seem to be as bad as me. They may have had issues for a year or two.

Me too at 73. I couldn't cope without my gel cooling mats in the bed and under my pillow. I haven't used a duvet since before the menopause, just have a sheet to cover me.
How lovely and cosy it must be for those who snuggle under a quilt.

Me too, and my mother was still having them at 86,

I do too and I’m 76 now. I have been verging on hyperthyroidism for some years and don’t really want to go on medication. I am also now on Anastrazole after breast cancer and they are a common side effect. I just have to resign myself to living with them, I dread the heating going on and I can’t wear thick clothing.

I had a hysterectomy post menopause (5 years ago) and my hot flushes came back. My gynaecologist said it's not unusual.

I still have them, 2 or 3 per night.
I take a lot of steroids due to a medical condition and these make hot flushes worse. I keep the temperature in the bedroom really cold and most nights have a fan blowing on me.

I’m 69 and 15 years post menopausal. Started HRT at age 64 as ghastly meno symptoms showed no signs of abating. Despite an HRT patch I still get three hot flushes at night. When I asked my GP when I can expect the flushes to cease she said that in some women they never do stop! At least I don’t get them during the day when they used to occur ever hour.

I was just going to post about this I have been having flushes not as bad as the time of the menopause. They had stopped but now they are back They seem to be subsiding again but I keep getting sweaty forehead.
It’s great that it’s not just me, any ideas how to stop them when your post menopause and 64?

I’ve had this too. Things settle down and I think phew finally finished, then back they come!

I have been on patches for about 30 years. I recently had a bad fall and had huge bruises by my elbow and hip. Nothing broke! I think the HRT protected my bones.

Thanks Fairiesfolly, am waiting for my dr to ring me. It’s unbelievable really that we can still be suffering after all this time. This past year has been miserable for me!

Hetty58 Tue 24-Sept-19 13:07:39

I remember asking my elderly mum when the hot flushes and night sweats stop. 'I still get them!' she said. Pretty depressing!

Fairiesfolly Tue 24-Sept-19 13:03:49

gilbo21 I had hysterectomy back in 1988 and had HRT implants which were great at the time as the patches left my skin looking rather swollen and itchy. I am sure there are more up to date treatments now though or should I say better ingredients for whatever one may be allergic to.

I came off HRT and got through the rest ok with the help of some natural remedies but thought the hot flushes were done with! I have had a thyroid check this past year but will go and get some bloods done to see what’s going on!

gilbo21 Tue 24-Sept-19 11:46:33

I’m exactly the same, I’m 63 and had a hysterectomy 16 years ago. Flushed and anxiety horrible but all tests etc are normal. My dr is thinking of putting me on hrt patches? Anyone else tried them?

grannyqueenie Mon 23-Sept-19 21:49:38

I’m so glad to hear it’s not just me still having night sweats and disturbed sleep. At 68 and over 20 years post menopause it drives me nuts that this still happens! My thyroid’s been checked and is ok, who knows why it keeps on happening!

BlueSky Mon 23-Sept-19 20:03:08

Exactly Fiachna50 do we assume it's normal or could it be something else, as you suggest? I certainly didn't expect it at this late stage!

TerriBull Mon 23-Sept-19 19:51:09

Mid 60s, late menopause, still have hot flushes and feel very hot at night, but not so bad that the sheets are damp, however, the necessity to throw the duvet off to cool down at regular intervals is there. It's a drag! Take comfort OP, you are not alone, loads of us here experiencing one of the down sides of being a woman sad

Fiachna50 Mon 23-Sept-19 19:21:22

I get terrible night sweats and am postmenopausal. However, might be an idea to get your thyroid checked out.

Beckett Mon 23-Sept-19 19:19:21

I'm another one suffering I went through menopause over 20 years ago - still suffering hot flushes and really bad night sweats. I have taken to having a towel on the bottom sheet and another wrapped around the pillow. The hot flushes often leave me with wet hair and damp clothes angry

I was hoping I would be like my Mother who barely noticed the menopause and never had any hot flushes!

MissAdventure Mon 23-Sept-19 19:14:33

Well, the advice is to see a doctor if you have unexplained hot flushes, so it might be as well to have a health check if you haven't had one for a while.

FlexibleFriend Mon 23-Sept-19 19:08:48

I've had hot flushes and night sweats every day for 15 years.

Fairiesfolly Mon 23-Sept-19 18:33:49

Oh dear I thought I was rid of them, seems like they are quite common.... I’ll just have to grin and bear it a bit longer then!!

My poor daughter is going through it now as well! Why do women do all the hard work, periods, babies menopause. I’m coming back as a man next time ?!

craftyone Mon 23-Sept-19 17:47:46

same here at 71. Sometimes I get that churning inside and heat spreads over me. I started menopause at 52 and thought I would be finished at 65 or so

KatyK Mon 23-Sept-19 16:44:24

I'm 70 and I'm having worse ones now than I did during the menopause.
