Very true oldgimmer - your last sentence that is.

I think a very prescribed "diet" is ok to kick off with.

After that, bear in mind eating for health is a lifetime committment, not a "diet".

Everything in moderation works for most people. Unfortunately we seem to have lost sight of what "moderation" means.

I am on the keto diet at the moment, which means no bread, potatoes, rice pasta sugar etc, mainly proteions and fats
I don't want to lose much weight only about 7-10 lbs, but it had mainly landed on my stomach and thighs a bit on the bust,
My daughter is on it and needs to lose about 20 lbs
I have already lost the belly fat and my bra is a bit looser and waist slimmer after 2 weeks, I don't seem to have lost much when I get weighed, but almost enough, and that was all I wanted
I just couldn't fit into my usual jeans/trousers, and even jumpers were tight
I have not missed sugar or bread, and I will not eat cakes etc like I did, although it wasn't many
I am determined to eat more healthily now

Eat well, not to much, most of it plants (Michael Pollan, food writer)

Then just ignore anything else any person, newspaper, tv, social media or best friend tells you on the subject.

Yes KatyK I think we have just to take all these finds with a pinch of salt! (No pun intended!) The old advice of everything in moderation and a bit of what you fancy still stands!

Yes Gonegirl I think it's a generation thing with us who were teenagers when Twiggy was! Just can't relax and eat what our bodies tell us to eat!

KatyK Sun 20-Oct-19 10:09:54

I am sick and tired of the health police. I have got to the point in the past where I'm scared to eat or drink anything. Now I just do my best.

There is a lot of evidence now to suggest that high cholestrol levels are not related to artery blocking and that the research that said it was was financed by pharmaceutical companies and sugar producers looking to find someone else to blame for increased obesity and heart disease. Hundreds of years of fat and protein eating did not result in overweight people - the introduction of sugar and processed seed oils etc did. Time to return to the diet of our grandparents and great-grandparents

Somebody needs to tell the restaurant I was at last night about balancing a meal. It was heavy on the meat and very light on the vegetables. On my plate were one slender carrot and one asparagus spear! I expected the Cauliflower cheese and peas etc to arrive, they didn't.

Going back to the OP, if we have half our plate full of veg, and the other half divided between meat/protein and carbohydrates we should be okay.

As someone already said, all things in moderation.

I take no notice. The advice changes from one year to the next. First it's ditch butter, eat marg, then it's marg is bad for you you're better off with butter. Then it's red wine is good for the heart, then it's no alcohol is safe, followed by stop eating red meat then it's red meat is fine.
I think it's still alright to eat your greens but who knows? I wouldn't be the least surprised if the Daily Mail's next sensationalist scare story is about cabbage causing cancer.

I can believe the malnutrition thing. Sometimes when I go out to lunch and perhaps eat a bit more in a meal than I normally would, I skip any more food later in the day. In the morning I inevitably feel weak and shaky. So yesterday, having had beef lasagne at the garden centre, I happily munched away on two rashers of bacon and an egg. (No bread)

Feel better for it this morning.

Everything in moderation as Grandmattie has said with the odd blow-out if you feel like it. What's good for us one day is considered bad the next.

wildswan16 Sun 20-Oct-19 09:46:06

Too much of anything isn't going to do you much good. Eat a balanced diet, avoid the things that are obviously rubbish. Have some self-control and respect your body.

DanniRae Sun 20-Oct-19 09:25:39

Why Iam64? confused

(I am on statins!!)

Iam64 Sun 20-Oct-19 09:23:56

Yes, exactly what grandMattie said.

Also, don't take statins if you're a woman, unless you have already had a stroke or a heart attack.

grandMattie Sun 20-Oct-19 09:16:18

EVerything in moderation and ignore the prophets of doom!

BlueSky Sun 20-Oct-19 08:58:51

We all know that LDL is bad for us but did you know that too much good cholesterol HDL is also bad? And that a very low overall cholesterol puts you at risk of emorrhagic stroke? Also older people on very low calorie diets as we have been indoctrinated that fat, salt, carbs are bad for us, are suffering from malnutrition? So much conflicting advice that you don't know what to do for the best!
