Article in the DM today re the link between gut health and pill popping.

BlueSky Thu 24-Oct-19 11:01:29

Exactly! My poor late mum in law was on a good dozen + tablets all prescribed and revised regularly by GP. Of course they all had some side effects and possibly didn't help her quality of life but she needed them. Whenever she mentioned to her doctor that she had a problem, they would say she was taking so many different pills that it was difficult to pin point which was the culprit!

I'm the same. Much as I hate taking Warfarin, After suffering huge blood clots in both my lungs, I need to take anti-coagulant medication to keep me alive.

Callistemon Wed 23-Oct-19 22:40:03

The article is probably worth a mention.

However, it is the way it has been presented to us pill poppers by someone who enjoys perfect health because she leads a perfect life (apparently) which is questionable.

Laughable and faintly ridiculous old ladies acting out their frustrations
That’s rich coming from someone in her mid-late 70’s !
Who’re you calling old ?

Gonegirl Wed 23-Oct-19 21:02:31

Laughable and faintly ridiculous old ladies acting out their frustrations

Nice.

Gonegirl Wed 23-Oct-19 21:01:12

Of course I'm not happy with it Sparklefizz. But I need it.

Sparklefizz Wed 23-Oct-19 20:56:10

Hetty58 I love kefir!

Marydoll Wed 23-Oct-19 20:51:04

I too was interested in the article. That's what it was, an article, not the personal opinion of the OP. As a regular user of steroids and on antibiotics for life, I was already aware of the points made in the article and the implications of taking these drugs. It's not new information.

It's all about what is right for the patient and deciding, without meaning to sound dramatic, what is the lesser evil, death or an unhealthy gut.
However, I'm disappointed that the thread has gone off track, I was hoping for an interesting discussion.

GabriellaG54 Wed 23-Oct-19 20:49:18

Anyway...talk among yourselves.
The usual suspects have decided to start their playground antics yet again.
Instead of ignoring an article in which they have no interest (but read anyway and derided the contents)
It's their BP which will be raised, certainly not mine.
Laughable and faintly ridiculous old ladies acting out their frustrations. ???

Sparklefizz Wed 23-Oct-19 20:46:51

GoneGirl I could tell you what I do to help myself with it, as indeed I told you earlier this year on here, but clearly sarcasm is your forte and you're not really interested so there's no point in me wasting my energy.

Good luck with taking your PPI. If you are happy with it, then far be it from me to suggest otherwise.

grapefruitpip Wed 23-Oct-19 20:46:38

Actually there is a need to get in a strop.

There are vulnerable people on this site, perhaps afraid to seek help from a GP.

I don't believe this thread helps them or is kind.

Bathsheba Wed 23-Oct-19 20:45:31

you your

Bathsheba Wed 23-Oct-19 20:45:06

I am perfectly aware who you comment was addressed to Gabriella, having 'bothered to read the thread'. Am I not allowed to respond to comments which answer someone other than myself? Silly me, I thought all comments on a thread were for public consumption.

Sparklefizz Wed 23-Oct-19 20:44:03

Of course it is, Grapefruit
Sparklefizz ,..,.,wrap your brain round this, it is possible to help oneself and take medication.

No need to get in a strop and be rude. confused

Please tell me in which post on this thread I wrote that I don't care about the opinion of others and where do I pretend to try to educate/help ?
I posted an article for anyone who may have had an interest.
Do you go around accusing programme makers or authors of 'pretending to educate'
Seriously...some people need to settle down.

GabriellaG54 Wed 23-Oct-19 20:30:00

Bathsheba

If you bothered to read the thread and not spout ignorant remarks, you'd know that my comment about fresh air etc was a reply to a previous post by Gonegirl, not a smug comment about my own health.
Engage ? before ?‍?

Hetty58 Wed 23-Oct-19 20:25:40

Well, I thought it was interesting (shame about the sniping) and I did notice feeling more energetic when I began drinking daily kefir.

My friend has asthma and thought she'd find out the 'cleanest' (least air polluted) area to move to. She discovered that we are bombarded by pollutants from the USA, Sahara and elsewhere, depending on the wind direction!

The researchers used a sample of 2000 people , the DM grabbed this and decided to put it out there using provocative, sensationalist language.

Then somebody who purports to be in excellent health all the time, and not to care about the opinion of others, refers to people who take medication as pill poppers.

Oh and pretends she is trying to educate/help.

GabriellaG54 Wed 23-Oct-19 20:21:22

Blame the writer of the article. I simply put it there for people to read IF they were interested AFTER reading the article's headline.
No-one forced you to read it and I made no comment on it.
You need to write to the DM not mouth it off at me.

GabriellaG54 Wed 23-Oct-19 20:17:23

I thought that researchers just give out the facts and findings, not once did I read that their findings made it seem easy.
Oh well...I suppose it depends on your mood when you read it.

Bathsheba Wed 23-Oct-19 20:12:58

Maybe people who rely on prescribed medication to stay alive, object to having the dangers highlighted by someone who, in the next breath, proclaims her own excellent, non-pill-popping, healthy lifestyle.

The words smug, superior and high horse spring to mind.

grapefruitpip Wed 23-Oct-19 20:03:40

Sparklefizz......wrap your brain round this, it is possible to help oneself and take medication.

grapefruitpip Wed 23-Oct-19 20:02:25

It's not helpful to quote sensationalised passages from newspapers re Brexit as it too is a serious issue but there are many on here who do just that

What on earth is the link between Brexit and this article?

I'm sure if a poster had begun a discussion about the link between physical health, mental health, gut health and over medicating.....in the spirit of enquiry and care, it would have been well received.

Gonegirl Wed 23-Oct-19 19:54:40

I know that exercise in the fresh air can help depression, but exactly what do you do when marvellous exercise leaves you exhausted?

Yes. People should definitely "wind their necks in". Or at least not make these things that they know nothing about (yet) seem so easy.
