tickingbird I am 100% right on what I posted about death rates. You’ve had at least two posts deleted for personally abusing me and your posts appear to be getting increasingly personal again. You tried to goad me on the DA thread but I walked away. I won’t leave this thread because truth and facts matter. Do goad away with inaccurate and personal posts - it’s not me who looks the idiot.

Absolutely Urm but the difference is so important. If the death rate had really fallen, we would need to know why eg the virus had mutated to be less serious or a new more successful treatment had been introduced

For crying out loud any disease can be fatal depending on your risk factors! For the majority of people it is relatively mild. For those with underlying health problems (myself included on two fronts) it could be horrendous. There is also the fact that some react badly and seem to have a far worse illness than others, even though they don’t have underlying health problems.

Stop dictating to everyone and constantly putting yourself forward as some kind of expert. Maybe you need to triangulate more!

Perhaps I thought callous because you seem dismissive...you are not at high risk being over 60 though.
I have a weak immune system and 2 respiratory illnesses. I have enough trouble recovering from a cold virus therefore I am scared.
There are many other people who also already have respiratory conditions and weak or compromised immune systems. Those are the people who won't be able to shake it off so easily.

I’m coming back to the point I made earlier a out death rates and deaths. I think it’s really important for us to be as accurate as we can be on here. My understanding is that the number of cases of the virus in China is falling. You would therefore expect the number of deaths to fall. The death rate is however the proportion of deaths related to number of cases of infection. I can’t find anything that says the death rate is falling.

How coronavirus is spread

Because it's a new illness, we do not know exactly how coronavirus spreads from person to person.

Similar viruses are spread in cough droplets.

It's very unlikely it can be spread through things like packages or food. Viruses like coronavirus cannot live outside the body for very long.

Its a bit of a minefield - lots of people have fluey type viruses at the moment, I have a cough and sore throat which I think I caught from one of the GC who seems to catch every bug going. Of course I'm worried it might be this flu - should I stay at home the whole time even though I don't feel too bad? I cover my mouth with a scarf when out and do use tissues, hand washing etc. but maybe I should get tested, call 111, self isolate ? Of course, whatever the bug I know I shouldn't spread my germs around and have cancelled a couple of planned activities, anyone else in the same boat?

Just a thought, but could this virus be transfered if you buy products from China? My DH purchases items on ebay and many things come from China. I am a little concerned especially as he has COPD.

The mortality figures we have at the moment ( and of course there are caveats) related to age are 60-69 3.6%, 79-79 ( 8%) 80+ 14.8% against an overall rate of 2.1%. Many of us on GN as well as being over 70 have other risks factors as well. We have every right to expect more information from this Government

But I am puzzled as to what else you think the government should be doing pinkquartz ?

I can understand why some are worried.

I guess I am in a high risk group as I am over 60 but I still maintain that it’s important to keep a sense of perspective about what is a relatively mild illness.

Of course no one knows how things will develop and the situation may change for the worse, but in the meantime most folk are going about their lives as normal which is important.

It will help no one if there is widespread panic with supermarket shelves being stripped for instance.

I have taken NAC for years.
During that time i have continued to develop COPD and to still have a weak immune system . I catch every virus and I stay ill for a long time.
Therefore I don't believe NAC does give much protection.
I take it for my Liver.

Myself and OH take a daily supplement called NAC, it’s little known or used in the UK.
It has so many benefits from treating addictions to COPD......really!
Research suggests it can help massively in the treatment of influenza type virus.

Well the Italian death rate is over 2 per cent. I think that it's short sighted for the official advice that schools should not close unless cases are confirmed. I think that it would be wise to take all circumstances into account. It does seem right to close if there are strong indications.
