Back of Knee pain - getting worse

The pain is pretty unbearable at the moment and I have had my fair share of pain therefore I'm not 100%convinced that's all that's going on......but I'll do as I'm told for a few weeks and then go back to GP.
I have 2 dogs but right now I couldn't walk them if I tried. Maybe if it settles down I'll give it a go otherwise Any spare dog walkers out there

I thought it was a vein when you described it. When it’s a bit better you need to walk! I have bad varicose veins and have had phlebitis. The simplest cure is walking, hire a dog if you need to but at least half an hour a day!

The NHS don’t take treat veins at all unless they’re life threatening. They’re deemed as cosmetic. I always have to pay for treatment now, and have done for the last 15 years or so. It may just settle down, but to aid it, wear support tights if you can. At least it’s not hot yet!

That's good to know. What a relief for you. I hope the pain subsides soon. DD had veins injected (at least I think that's what they did). She was in a lot of pain and went to a private clinic that only deals with varicose veins. She was their youngest ever patient. Unfortunately she seems to have inherited my Granny's bad veins. Just bad luck and genetics. Same for you May7?

Managed to get a GP appt this morning and it appears that I have nothing mechanically wrong with my knee but..... I have developed a large inflamed varicose vein at the back which extends into my calf. Who knew this would be so painful ???? Apparently they don’t strip out veins anymore as it’s not too successful and tbh this is not something I would have done. I’ve now got an elastic stocking in place and taking Naproxen. Got to elevate legs and rest for 2 weeks.
So be it. Ps I’m using haemorrhoid cream on it as well ha ha.

Living in hope the inflammation will subside in time for ☘️St Patrick’s night Celebrations ☘️

Sorry to hear this! It does sound like Bakers cyst. A good way to rest your leg is straight out with a rolled up towel under your knee to support the joint.

Best possible scenario: you have over exerted yourself and your knee joint has made fluid to make you rest it. A Bakers cyst CAN go away on it's own if you R.I.C.E but still best to see the Dr in case it's something else.

I would go straight to A & E myself - or at least phone 111 (UK) as a temperature is a sign of infection that needs urgent treatment.

I experienced the same as cornergran, initially a baker's cyst but subsequently osteoarthritis in the knee. I've had several arthroscopy operations on both knees and that gave huge relief but sadly, arthroscopies are no longer available on the NHS. Knee replacements will probably be the only option. Don't delay OP, get your knees looked at by a GP asap, it only gets worse if untreated.

The symptoms you describe may were the first indicator of osteoarthritis in my knee. GP confirmed with an x-ray and then referred to the physio department. Hope you get your appointment.

I’d never heard of Baker’s cyst until mine was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago. GP said to give it another month, it varies in both size and amount of pain from day to day. I can’t have ibuprofen so take paracetamol when I need to.
Icing helps too. I hope you’re soon feeling better.

Thank you tickingbird no, no lump that I can feel. That was one of my first thoughts too but knee is swollen so may not be able to feel it ? Gone to bed early with iPad trying to rest it but probably be awake all night playing on Games forum . I’m reluctant to go to surgery with a temperature so I’ve done the online 111 and the response is go to GP I’ll ring in morning

Definitely see GP - it sounds truly horrible.

Phone the surgery first thing tomorrow and explain exactly how you’re feeling. Insist on speaking to a doctor if you can .

Have you felt for a lump behind the knee as it could be a baker’s cyst. Alternatively, it could be a small fragment of cartilage that’s broken away and lodged in the joint.
