Bad news.

Already have 2 threads going about Boris, but I think one is now being taken down.

That just proves the point that it's not just the over 70s at risk of complications. Prince Charles got better in a week aged 71, while Boris only 55 ends up in hospital. Anyway wishing the PM a speedy recovery, we need some positive stories.

But we do not know whether he as any 'underlying conditions'. High blood pressure? Type 2 diabetes?

He’s overweight and data recently published showed higher BMIs to be a factor.

His breathing has been causing concern.

I'm not surprised to be honest. He has been burning the candle at both ends, difficult not to when you're Prime Minister during a national crisis. To fight the virus you need to look after yourself and get plenty of sleep, and I mean plenty. The body fights the battle while you sleep. If you try and carry on as normal the virus will take the high ground and gain the advantage. The antibodies will be overwhelmed. After a week you either recover or go downhill. I really hope Boris will get the best treatment and recover soon but he needs to rest.

Don't forget the theory of viral load. If Boris got a big dose of virus from someone, and Charles just a very few half dead viruses on a door handle that may have been the reason. Or possibly the mutation that Boris caught was a nastier one than the one Charles caught. Or possibly Charles slept through his illness and Boris carried on working and wore himself out. Many different possibilities. .

Yes Chestnut at the time they were telling us about social distancing, politicians weren't!

Yesterday a geneticist was suggesting that some people, like those young and healthy people who die of Covid-19, may have some genetic variation that makes them more susceptible than others to this virus.

I do remember reading once that something like 40% of the population have a genetic variation that means they do not get flu.

Yes monica that is right, and true of all sorts of diseases.

Chestnut Mon 06-Apr-20 10:16:56

Our genes are so diverse. We carry diseases inherited from our ancestors and probably have no idea. We may also carry some form of protection but again have no idea what for. Some people smoke until they're 90 and others seem to become ill just through passive smoking (remember Roy Castle?) I'm sure some lucky people are genetically protected from corona as we hear of people carrying it who have no symptoms. That is mind blowing. You just wonder why the virus doesn't attack them.

I am sure we wish BJ a quick recovery as well as we do anyone who is ill.
Wishing you all well.
