I don't want to HRT. I've never done well with anything that affects hormones.

This thing seems to be never ending.

I've never had PMT mood changes in my life and now I am all over the place. Backwards puberty? lol

When will it end?!

What natural remedies do people use and how do they help?

I always had horrendous periods and to be honest the menopause has passed easily enough.
The most frustrating symptoms which have persisted although I sort of have them under control are a) hot flushes: not drinking alcohol and drinking more water definitely helped me ,
And b) “itch, scratch, itch” due to lack of oestrogen (those who have suffered it will know where it attacks!)
No more bubble baths or anything fragrant added to bath water helps.
It will be ongoing so I have a prescription for oestrogen replacement cream from GP, and buy Replens online. I find the 2 things together keep me comfortable.

Researched and tried every herb etc known to woman and nothing worked, been on half a HRT patch for a long time now, very reluctant to give up entirely.

I also use SAGE tablets from Holland & Barrett
.buy them when they are on sale. They really do take my hot flushes away..if ever I have forgotten to take them on holiday etc ..the flushes come back with a vengeance. The only natural remedy I have ever known to actually work .

This is such a difficult question to answer as what works for one person may not work for another. I tried various 'natural' remedies with no difference. Menopause symptoms can vary so much and I found it to be like constant pmt. Evening primrose oil is something I've taken for many years and seems to help. The other obvious things like plenty of sleep if you can and a good diet and it does get easier over time.

Agnus Castus - it's a herb that is brilliant for any hormone problems, so works for puberty as well! Good Luck!

Evening Primrose Oil everyday did it for me. Fan for hot flushes ?

keeno

You may be my favourite person in the world right now.. Cake for menopause, this is the dream! I'm going to definitely try this

keeno Sat 11-Jul-20 13:49:04

1st post ever, but I need to share.
Believe me, I did ALL the natural remedies, and I have to say try Linda Kearns HRT Cake.
I would have gone on HRT, but a breast cancer scare at that time made me research further.
It took 6 weeks before the real benefits were seen,( and I nearly faltered, and opted for HRT), but it saved me!
Adjust recipe to suit - stem ginger++for me, bake till very well done, or can be toasted. Delicious. Slice for breakfast, another at elevenses, never hungry.
If I missed for over a week due to hols., or just wanting a change, the symptoms were back - dripping in shops, soaked at night etc.
I do hope this helps.

I take Tesco menopause support, has all vitamins etc .1500 mg of starflower oil as has a higher GLA content to balance hormones(advised by breast clinic to take this) and mixed seed on breakfast each morning. Also cut out caffeine helped with hot flushes.

I had a hysterectomy at age 40 and went straight on HRT, I was on it for 25 years with no adverse effects. My dr told me to come off it then and since then I've had all the symptoms, hot flushes etc etc. I also have since developed osteoporosis, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, osteoarthritis, bladder cancer and breastcancer. I wish I had stayed on HRT for ever.

Missfoodlove Sat 11-Jul-20 12:51:37

Sage for flushes, D Mannose for kidney, bladder cystitis etc.
Rioja and Sauvignon Blanc for everything else.

Suzalein Sat 11-Jul-20 11:53:58

Red clover and sage tea!

knspol Sat 11-Jul-20 11:49:35

Did not want to go the HRT route so tried most things for a long time ie soya milk, black cohosh tablets, no alcohol, caffeine free even resorted to those magnets that you wear in your undies. Nothing worked and eventually after about 18mths went on to HRT. the relief was amazing. night sweats, hot flushes, dry hair and skin and those mood swings all stopped. Gynaecologist advised come off tablets gradually after 3 yrs but once I was down to just over half dose all symptoms came back with a vengeance. Since then have just put up with it all over again. Although symptoms have reduced over the last couple of years I still have several hot flushes a day and generally at least one night sweat and that's around 15 yrs later.

Theoddbird Sat 11-Jul-20 11:41:57

A friend tried sage for hot flushes. She said it was brilliant and cut them back enourmously. She found Holland and Barrett most helpful.

JeannieB44 Sat 11-Jul-20 11:18:33

I have used Sainsburys own brand menopause support and found them good and not expensive. Out the other side of menopause now but am on medication anyway as I have been left with severe anxiety. Not good under the present situation hence the need for the medication. Hope you find something that helps your symptoms.

Toadinthehole Sat 11-Jul-20 11:12:52

When will it end, goodness me, if I had the answer to that I’d probably be able to sort out this virus too!!? I was put off HRT because my mum died of breast cancer. It is a roller coaster of symptoms going backwards and forwards. Just when you think you’re through it...back something comes. I take vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, folic acid. I tried actual menopausal supplements, but to no avail. My worst thing has been sickness, aches and pains, depression, anxiety. I hope you find a solution soon.

Patticake123 Sat 11-Jul-20 11:08:25

Sage tea was brilliant for me. It tasted foul but I drank it morning and evening and it definitely helped the hot flushes. I grew so much sage in the garden, I could have set up a business! Take a handful of leaves, steep in boiled water, leave for 15 minutes, strain and drink. You can make it more palatable by adding sugar or honey but I used to take a deep breath and swallow ? Good luck, once the worse of the symptoms are over, post menopause is a glorious stage of life.

Thank you all, lots of ideas I can look into

icanhandthemback Sat 11-Jul-20 10:52:39

Starglaze, like you I suffered terrible PMT and had a radical hysterectomy to stop it as I was so desperate to live a more balanced life. I couldn't take the pill as it made me as nutty as a fruitcake and when I had to agree to take Estrogen if they operated, I was really worried about it. The results were entirely different to what I had imagined. For the first time since puberty I have a relaxed life and the entire household is much happier. Now, with the shortages of HRT, I am scared I won't be able to take it.

stillaspringchicken Sat 11-Jul-20 10:39:36

I resisted HRT for years and tried many alternatives - the only thing I found really effective was substituting dairy milk with soy milk, which vastly reduced hormone-related headaches. I could cope until the brain-fog descended, when I finally went on HRT, which has worked brilliantly with no adverse affects (I'm on patches).

Gwenisgreat1 Sat 11-Jul-20 10:33:53

Like you I resisted HRT, but after trying Evening Primrose, Agnus Castus and a few others, I caved in and never looked back!

jaylucy Sat 11-Jul-20 10:22:56

Evening Primrose oil capsules each day, helped my dry skin, Sage for hot flushes.
A friend of mine swears by Agnus Castus but I haven't tried that!

GagaJo Sat 11-Jul-20 10:16:25

I had early menopause because I had a prophylactic total hysterectomy in my early 40s. The only thing that helped was completely giving up caffeine. Couldn't take hormones because of the cancer risk (BRCA1 carrier).

annifrance Sat 11-Jul-20 10:12:06

i'm one of the lucky ones that sailed through the menopause with just a little Black Kohosh for vague hot flushes.

Hypno Sat 11-Jul-20 09:59:55

Hi Lycopodium homeopathic remedy .....got me thru the menopause...good luck
