Embarrassing: Camping & Constipated

Sorry this is a bit embarrassing but we are currently on a camping holiday and I can't poo! We've been here since last Saturday afternoon and it just won't happen.

It's not helping having to use the site toilets - a 10 minute walk across a field and then six cubicles, lack of privacy and my bottom won't relax.

Then the more I worry that I'm not pooing the worse it gets. I've spent ages sitting in my cubicle waiting for everyone else to leave, which never happens!

Any tips on how I can finally go to the toilet?

Prune juice every morning.

Hi everyone,

We are on our way home at the moment - can't wait to get home, sit on my own private toilet and finally have a bowel movement! blush

My chronic constipation issues (which affect me even on the home toilet) are due to a small rectocele which has taken all of the 'oommph' out of my pushing ability. Sorry for tmi but I can 'start' it reaches the exit, then stops and then retreats (if you know what I mean!) blush Sorry for tmi blush

The joys of having aging bowels. When I was in my 30's a poo would take two minutes!

Try Lactulose. You can get it from a chemist. It helps to lubricate the bowels rather than a purge effect which a lot of constipation remedies do. Also drink plenty of fresh juice, orange or prune are great. If it gets really bad you can also buy enemas from the chemist that you can do yourself. Hope this helps and remember to relax.

Might not work this time if you're already bunged up but a good sized bowl of bran flakes last thing at night will do the trick in the morning. Fibre is key to a good, regular poo habit.

Simple - Buy yourself a bottle of Lactulose. From any chemist or any chemist inside a supermarket. Its thick and syrup like but works. My doctor used to prescribe it on prescription but was told to buy it for myself this last time. I use at home and take with my on holiday. In bottle. Small size or larger one. You supposed to take small teaspoon sized but i have one of the desert type spoons and bingo.

Laxibo or is it Laxigo! Twice I’ve been discharged from hospital completely constipated when only senna was administered to no effect. The above is excellent, but don’t overdo it as I did. Without going into details I need to hire a carpet shampooer.

RachB2020. You really have my sympathy. So many of us have this problem on holidays. I have always put it down to change of water/diet and anxiety. I also have IBS and I now prefer to go self catering purely because of this. Its limiting and can be embarassing. If I cant go I find a 20 minute walk helps, LOTS of water or orange juice (with the bits), alcohol bungs you up. Loads of crisps (and I mean mega pig out) and 2 cans of coke give me the poops the following day. I would recommend a gentle stool softner like Fybrogel. Is there a seperate disabled loo you could use for a bit of privacy maybe? If anyone says anything just quietly say 'not all disabilities are obvious'. you must be suffering quite a lot of discomfort by now, sosorry for you.

I always take a packet of those tablets for constipation as a last resort

A whole packet? All at once??????

Crikey.

@rachb2020

You have highlighted why there is nothing in this world that has ever persuaded me to go camping, and having to trek to find a loo or a shower would be top of the list. Give me my creature comforts every time!

@Bluesky and @MissAdventure, I live in Singapore! Thanks!

Cut meat and bread out of your diet....meat especially clogs you up. You will soon be 'flowing' again

kwest Sat 22-Aug-20 12:04:43

So pleased this thread is here. I was born with this tendency,
I know to never eat white bread and to avoid white flour in products, unless bread has lots of seeds and high fibre content.
A large mug of hot tea seems to get things on the right track but I always try to have high fibre diet and I take peppermint oil capsules morning and night. If I don't then I suffer. Staying anywhere new does seem to have the psychological affect of stopping things from happening. I have learned some extra tips from this thread. Never thought of kiwi fruit but will give it a try.

DotMH1901 Sat 22-Aug-20 11:54:46

Glad i am not the only one who finds it difficult to use a public toilet! I would take my phone with me and play music to 'hide' what I was doing smile As someone else says, men don't seem to worry about using public toilets (or using the loo when visiting family/friends etc), wonder why we women worry so much about it?

MissAdventure Sat 22-Aug-20 11:43:04

I try and wait until the hand dryer goes on to do the deed (or at least one installment of it!)

Camelotclub Sat 22-Aug-20 11:42:42

This is why I'd never go camping! Hope things have moved along for you by now.

TillyWhiz Sat 22-Aug-20 11:42:36

I used to have exactly the same problem when camping - I depended on apples and licorice allsorts. I used to try to find a quiet public loo when out and about!

Candelle Sat 22-Aug-20 11:42:16

Drink gallons of water.

East prunes, popcorn and licquorice (don't quite know if these are available on a camp site - with a shop?)

Fybogel is useful (from a chemist).

'Blow up a balloon' (a figurative one) when sitting waiting - that promotes the correct bit of you to work in a good way.

Good luck!

Joesoap Sat 22-Aug-20 11:40:39

I loathe having to use a public toilet, when there will be people waiting,it just doesnt happen then, and I get a bit paranoid and can only think of one thing, why are we ladies like this?

marpau Sat 22-Aug-20 11:32:55

Wetheralls sugar free toffees don't know what's in the artificial sweeteners but it definitely gets things moving

Luckygirl Sat 22-Aug-20 11:25:21

Having suffered from IBS for decades and being a veteran of public loos, I am totally immune to embarrassment about noises and smells. Just let it all hang out!

And spending so much time attending to nature, I have heard some fascinating conversations between and within cubicles, especially when there are children involved!
