'Flu vac at pharmacy

We had our 'Flu vaccinations yesterday at Lloyds pharmacy - so easy and quick. They rang us to make an appointment as we had it with them last year and its nice to know that's done and dusted. Our GP surgery has even got stocks of the vaccination in yet. By the way its still NHS at the pharmacy so you dont pay although I think you can at some places.

Your GP can give you the triple strength vaccine (advisable for seniors) but pharmacies can only give you the standard one. Have had mine from GP in a superbly managed trot on foot through the surgery car park.

So is this the one that all GP’s give, or do you have to request it if you’re a special case?
I thought the over 65’s were given a certain vaccine, and younger people a different one?

What ctussaud posted is WRONG as in fake news, false information, a lie! WRONG WRONG WRONG.

My pharmacy gave me the triple strength vaccine last year after the GP booked me in for ordinary vaccine (they hadn’t checked my age!)

I went to see GP on Tuesday about an unrelated matter and he gave me the “senior” version at the same time

Really happy and prefer it that the surgery gets the money then a pharmacy

The pharmacy in Morrison’s was advertising flu jabs last year, so the Bodach decided to have his there and then ( I had already had mine when my bloods were being taken). He was well pleased with himself till they charged him £12.50!

Some surgeries in the past have asked for their patients not have their jabs at local chemist because the surgery then loses out on the payment. This year, they are probably only too pleased to get some of the burden shifted.

I have had my flu jab at small local chemist when I have been unable to get to the planned ‘jab day’ at the surgery — no queuing, shorter journey and completely painless injection.

My GPs surgery is my next door neighbour so I'll wait until the vaccine is available there. I've never had a problem with having it.

I booked at Boots as soon as booking opened because I was concerned that if I waited to hear from my GP that infections might have started to increase. I also had no idea what system they would be using so preferred the certainty of the Boots arrangement. If you are entitled to a free jab, it’s free at the pharmacy.

Our jabs will be done on the 28th. It’s organised by the GP surgery and will take place in the church hall about 500 metres from their building. I would have been happy to go to the pharmacy if necessary.

Our GP is doing them, between 7 2.30 on 3 Wednesday. Yes, I could book time off work, but why should I have to? Local pharmacy, here I come.

Our GPs surgery has a special day for their 65+ patients. It’s very easy, well organised and there’s no way I’m giving NHS money (as far as possible) to the private sector. They make enough money out of me.

Agree with Doodle And why the rush? Don't think anywhere will run out of vaccine for 65+ anytime soon. My practice is running timed-appointment Saturday sessions starting on 3 Oct, same as every year. Hope those above aren't the many GNs who scorn panic buying ?

wildswan16 Fri 18-Sept-20 11:54:19

Only info from my GP surgery is to follow instructions from another site which say to go to a drive thru flu clinic - you make an appointment first. Nothing about what to do if you don't actually have a car (which in my area, most older people do not have). They do not allow "walking" patients.

The only alternative is to pay at a chemist which I object to doing but will probably be forced to do. But what about those who are struggling financially already - and may well be those most at risk.

Had ours done Monday at our local Lloyds in Sainsburys. Quick and simple ,i'm never going back to the Doctors to have mine done again .My Doctors haven't even got them in yet. What's going to happen if lockdown comes again ,there will be a lot not be not able to get a flu jab ,that's why i went as soon as possible .

Had at Boots yesterday, booked online, uneventful and felt safe. GP said they would be in touch but so far haven’t

Nannan the constituent parts which make up the vaccine are different each year. The big pharmaceutical companies which make and supply the NHS have problems sometimes in supplying the quantity needed. The GPS are restricted by the pharmaceutical company deliveries. They can’t just shop around. Orders are usually in place months in advance.
I agree it’s far from perfect but there is a lot more going on behind the scenes to organise it all.

Doodle Fri 18-Sept-20 11:37:54

Nannan2 pharmacies and GPS get paid for giving the vaccination. So if you have it done at the pharmacy they get paid for giving you the jab. Pneumonia is usually given to people with chronic illnesses diabetes, heart problems, some types of asthma. I hope in the case of your 21 year old grandson that he doesn’t need it (I mean that I hope he isn’t seriously ill, I don’t mean it in a nasty way)

Nannan2 Fri 18-Sept-20 11:37:12

Yes i understood that Doodle, thats what i said- they should try get supplies from a supplier earlier then, theyre always short of supplies, and always runs into november, then they've still tostart booking everyone in....?

tattygran14 Fri 18-Sept-20 11:33:51

I was collecting my prescription on Tuesday, and as I was waiting the pharmacist asked if I'd like a flu jab. And did it, there and then. No charge. (Day Lewis pharmacy)

Nannan2 Fri 18-Sept-20 11:33:26

Yeah i dont think risking drs surgery right now is good idea.still not sure if son being ill was reaction to jab, or a bug hes picked up...its not covid, we sent for test.

Doodle Fri 18-Sept-20 11:32:50

Can’t jab anyone till they get the vaccine Nannan. They usually have to buy in bulk and store in fridges. It depends a lot on when the suppliers can deliver. I agree it is often easier and simpler to get it done at the pharmacy.

Nannan2 Fri 18-Sept-20 11:30:47

Didnt have to pay at boots last year, due to both our medical problems.& probably same this year.so who gets money then? I may have to pay for 21 year old to have pneumo vaccine(£70) but dont know yet, depends on his medical condition.

Nannan2 Fri 18-Sept-20 11:25:38

I see.well, if the surgery need the money that much, then they should jolly well pull their socks up and get the jabs organised earlier at my G.P.s then?

Millie22 Fri 18-Sept-20 11:24:51

I had mine done at Boots last year and had to pay. Not sure yet whether it will be free I'd rather go to Boots anyway as it's like a production line at the surgery.

granjan66 Fri 18-Sept-20 11:22:35

Had mine this morning. Just walked in and was asked if I wanted it there and then. Easy

Nannan2 Fri 18-Sept-20 11:21:13

When i think about it, the more people that are happy to go chemist for it, means docs surgery has even less to do- and ours is still only doing phone call appts- nurse does the jabs- we got appt for his pneumonia jab- had to be on time- wear masks etc, in to nurses room, jabbed, straight out again.Never even gave us an info leaflet.when he was ill& sick after it i had to ring pharmacy to get advice!they said she should have waited few minutes after it to make sure he had no bad reaction, and at least given info sheet.(as Boots gave me when i had pneumo jab in august)
