Gold crowns

My gold crown was on the NHS, I think we got better treatment 40plus years ago!

I had a crown fitted about 3 years ago when I broke a filled tooth. I was offered white or metal, not gold. It is silver in colour but was cheaper than the white option. As it's at the back it isn't very noticeable. I wasn't offered gold but then I'm an NHS patient!

I have two gold crowns, on rear molars, fitted many years ago whilst I was a Denplan patient (pre retirement). My current NHS dentist coos with delight every time she checks my teeth - she really is very taken with them. She assures me that they are lovely and are all gold rather than a mixture - which I find odd as I thought that gold was quite a soft metal - however what do I know? She's a lovely dentist and I'm lucky to have found such a pleasant and thorough person after being spoiled for years by being 'private' - however given her penchant for my crowns, I shan't be shutting my eyes in the chair - just in case!

I have a gold crown on a back tooth. It wasn't done recently - 50+ years ago - but had it been done recently I would not be able to testify to longevity of gold crowns. I'd go for gold, no question.

Go for the gold! Mine was actually slightly cheaper than the white, and it's in the back of my mouth so it's not obvious.

Plus, my 4yo grandson thinks it's endlessly fascinating--I have to show it to him regularly, even over FaceTime.

I’ve got one gold crown. My hygienist said ‘make sure it’s dug out when you pop your clogs’. Was she joking ... maybe not.

I have a gold crown that has lasted nearly 40 years, so far! The porcelain one lasted about 15 years, I suspect I have had good wear from both.

I have a gold crown on a molar and a porcelain one on a front tooth.

My dentist said that the gold crowns are much harder wearing and would last for the rest of my life. I was fifty-five at the time.

I have never heard of anyone having either type of crown renewed.

I also had one on a lower molar, it lasted many years but story of my mouth eventually had to come out. I too kept it and sold it on with my own scrap gold bits ?.

Might be an odd question (and I apologise to the sensitive!), but do the gold ones have to be removed prior to cremation? My OH has a couple of them.

I've got three gold crowns. I've had them for years. They are not very far back and can be seen when I laugh. They are very hard wearing, and when I had them done - the first one over 25 years ago - the dentist said they lasted longer than white ones. However, it was always about a little bit of vanity :-) I always loved seeing a little flash of gold when people with gold teeth laughed! Maybe I have pirate dna somewhere in my past!! I would thoroughly recommend them! Also, you never have to worry about them getting discoloured.

I have one on a backmost molar. It fits on a stump of tooth. My vg dentist said best option as no.vertical.room for white one. All rest white.

I have a white crown on a bottom molar. It was on a tooth that was damaged by Tetracycline - remember that? - and looks a lot better than the big amalgam filling that was there before. It has given me no problems whatsoever?

Had gold crown on back tooth where it doesn’t show about five years ago. Fine. Dentist said much more durable than white. Can’t remember cost but not too expensive.

I had gold crown years ago but got them taken out and replaced with white .. after about 20 years. When the dentist took them out I asked for the crowns back though .. well they are gold and I did pay for them and so I added the gold to other bits I no longer wore and got a ring made. Result !

I'm a grinder and have two gold crowns. I have an appointment next month for another one to be fitted. Private dentistry is an expensive luxury, but I couldn't hope for a more competent dentist.

My 2 gold crowns are over 50 years old. Equally old gold inlay came out last year (no more toffees for me) but the dentist did a bit of cleaning up and stuck it back in, no problems.

Have had a gold crown for 55 years. As long as they are fitted correctly they last longer, don't discolour, are stronger than the modern ceramic ones. I also have a couple of modern ones and I am much more aware of these strength-wise (feel less resiliant). Also gold can be made exceptionally fine for the edges fitting tighter and closer to the gum-line. The modern ones don't seem to have that to the same extent. I assume you are meaning a crown for a molar tooth, not an incisor or premolar.

DH has a gold crown, our dentist told him it was better to have a gold one towards the back as they are not as brittle as white so can take the pressure of chewing better and tend to last longer.

Mr Barmey has several gold crowns as he is what they call a grinder (grinds his teeth in his sleep). They have been in donkeys years and don't give him any problems. Worth the money

OOh I would love a gold tooth . We had an onion Johnnie ( Henri Tanguy ) when I was a wee girl and I was fascinated by his gold tooth !

I used to have gold crowns but about 10 years ago insisted that everything was replaced with white, well tooth colour! My dentist is my DH and tells me that in some situations the gold is stronger/ more durable but I'm doing OK so far!

I had a gold crown fitted 46 years ago and it is still going strong and hasn't given me a bit of trouble. Fully recommended.

I had a gold crown fitted when pregnant so free and I loved it.When my child was older he grabbed my chin and asked if I was chewing an earring! I liked the smoothness of it.

Do those that have been removed and kept have any value?

DH's lab made a gold crown for a patient that didn't really fit properly. We kept it, had it polished and put on my charm bracelet! We were young and foolish then.

If dh had any that he had removed from a patient's mouth we used to save them up and periodically a man came to the surgery, weighed the gold and gave us cash.
