Doctors told to bin leftover vaccines instead of administering second doses.

The revelation comes as hospitals become increasingly overwhelmed by the surge of COVID patients as the virus continues to spread across the UK.

GPs setting up vaccine clinics at short notice who find they have several injection doses left have reportedly been warned by local authorities that they cannot use them on staff or any patients who have already received their first jab.

Medics claim the policy, which has been described as “bordering on criminal”, is hampering the effort to vaccinate over-80s, along with frontline health and care workers.

The instructions are being reported across the country, according to The Telegraph.

Dr Robert Morely, director of professional support at the Birmingham Local Medical Committee, told the publication that the orders are "extremely counterproductive, nonsensical and ludicrous".

He said: “This is ridiculous, bordering on the criminal, to actually be wasting vaccines when you have the worst global healthcare crisis for a century."

I am well recovered from Covid, thank you. OH never got it- and is awaiting vaccination. I did not keep away because of Covid, but because of constant Covid. And a post being deleted for saying 'yes, we are chatting, isn't that lovely' - which was baffling in the extreme.

biba70 Sun 17-Jan-21 15:43:47

constant goading of course.

Aside from the topic here, which I will not debate anymore. Happy to leave you all to it, I think it is a shame that there is a core of posters on this site that have to turn personal about things. They reduce any topic that they do not approve of to personal attacks which then descend into nasty arguments. It is always the same people and they do it on multiple threads. It is in effect a form of censorship, because the end result (and I suspect the intention) is to either drive certain posters away OR to stop them posting their viewpoint.

This is a site for discussion.

Callistemon Sun 17-Jan-21 15:47:26

MawBe- how and why can you say it was fake news?
Because it was, biba

Why would someone like Dr Robert Morely lie?

He perhaps didn't lie as such, biba but there was a misunderstanding, he shot his mouth off on Twitter, the press picked up on it and magnified it out of proportion and made it out to be a shocking story ie Fake News.

Now he wishes he hadn't, seemingly.

I am glad you're back biba.

I consider that there are two sides to every story and one poster seems to be ganged up on quite a lot!

There's a clue in the OP. Yahoo.

I can't look at Yahoo, for some reason the consent box which I need to tick is just off my screen.
Perhaps that's just as well - are they worse than the Daily Mail for sensationalising non-stories?

As if people aren't worried, stressed and indeed distressed enough without more unfounded scaremongering.

MawBe Sun 17-Jan-21 16:02:05

I anticipate this thread disappearing very soon which might spare OP’s blushes.
A pity because this is not the first discussion based on a false premise or inaccurate information and statements of fact which are wrong need to be challenged.

GagaJo Sun 17-Jan-21 16:05:23

I think Yahoo are good because they have articles from a range of sources. Yes, the Daily Heil but also the Telegraph, Times, Washington Post, Al Jazeera etc. I like it because they post the articles from the UK broadsheets that are otherwise behind paywalls. Guardian of course is free online so no need to go to Yahoo for those articles.

Oh I do apologise for getting that wrong, I must have misunderstood something somebody said elsewhere

GagaJo Sun 17-Jan-21 16:17:56

The OP isn't blushing Maw. I have just checked back through my GNHQ messages in my emails and the last 2 threads that were deleted were for infighting 'spats' and the amount of off topic comments (racism).

See my comment of 15.47.

On a positive note over 3.4 million people in the UK have now had their first dose of vaccine. Over half of the over eighties have now been vaccinated.

GagaJo Sun 17-Jan-21 16:48:48

Whoo hoo GG13. That is amazing! Do you know how many have had both doses?

Perhaps half of over 80s in England, GrannyGravy and I'm glad some of my family have received their 1st (some their 2nd) vaccinations.

Lucca Sun 17-Jan-21 16:58:53

Re the vaccine I’ve been told about at least three people (who I know personally). who have been called for vaccination and have taken partner, OH or whatever along for company support transport or whatever and they too have received the vaccine !! Bear it in mind !

BUT as I said earlier, we should all just be glad this issue is resolved.

If I could, I would arrange to be outside a vaccination centre at close of play, to get one of the not used doses.

What an excellent idea..... mine is not in a place one would naturally be hanging around though.

Callistemon Sun 17-Jan-21 17:05:35

Interesting.
A husband and wife in my family were called on different days which made it awkward as they both required transport and it was some distance away.

Chewbacca Sun 17-Jan-21 18:41:29

My GP practice, like so many others, has been using up residual vaccine on healthcare practitioners each day. I've not yet heard of one confirmed case where a GP practice has thrown them away. And it does matter, very much indeed, that unsubstantiated "reports" such as this OP are not given credence and are not repeated until verified. It does no one any favours; including those who perpetuate such urban myths.

My son is a front line NHS worker. His hospital has been issuing the Pzr vac from day one. Every single day plenty dont turn up. You cant reuse it the following day so the hospital start offering it to front line staff. So far so good plenty of Dr.s and Nurses to take up excess. Then its offered to all hospital staff from Consultants to kitchen staff, computer techs to cleaners. Eventually vaccinating everyone at the hospital, which is great. But what happens at 8pm when there are less staff around and those that are have already had the jab. Unless powers that be can come up with a solution fast, it goes in the bin, fact!

Elegran Sun 17-Jan-21 19:49:43

If vaccinating were 24 hours a day, there would be people coming in for their jab all the time. The "extra" doses would get used up.

GagaJo Sun 17-Jan-21 20:01:28

Kissngate, that is shocking. Such a waste. Could they not start a first come, first served standby vaccination?

Exactly Elegran. And most people I have talked to and seen online would be prepared to attend at anytime. It is only the very occasional person that wouldn't be prepared to go at night.

Peasblossom Sun 17-Jan-21 20:07:46

Pilot 24/7 beng set up as we speak. If it works there’ll be more?

Callistemon Sun 17-Jan-21 20:12:39

Kissngate, that is shocking. Such a waste. Could they not start a first come, first served standby vaccination?

But it's not shocking because it hasn't happened yet.

It is just a hypothesis.

kissngate Sun 17-Jan-21 20:19:30

Elegran and Gagajo - son says they are hoping to start 24/7 vaccination very soon which will help with the excess.
