Canesten

Yesterday I went to the local Boots to get a tube of Canesten ,
The assistant first asked me what I was buying it for, I told her I had the “itch down below” She then asked me how old I was , I told her 73 , She then said she couldn’t sell it to me being over 70 and I would have to see the Doctor,
I was trying not to go to the surgery for a minor thing and buy it, I feel GP ,s are busy enough. This has never happened in the past ,although it has been a couple of years since I needed it ,
Has anyone had this happen?

Skin gets dry down there....resulting in itching.....so I use Diprobase, moisturiser. I get it on prescription, but you can also buy it off the shelf.

I work in community pharmacy. The reason they wouldn't sell canesten to you is because, in ladies over a certain age, there are more sinister reasons for thrush type symptoms. It would be awful if a patient was treating what they thought was thrush and later found out that they had something much worse. Please contact your doctor. Wishing you well. X

It’s because Thrush is uncommon in over 60’s but other issues which can mimic the symptoms are more serious Such as Lichen Schlerosis whjch needs different treatment. Well done assistant. She’s been properly trained .

Forgot to say that the Cervagyn is for thrush.

Sparklefizz Sun 24-Jan-21 11:13:00

There is a natural product called Cervagyn by Biocare, available online. It contains probiotics and herbs and was recommended to me by a naturopath I was seeing.

D-Mannose tablets work brilliantly for bladder/cystitis problems.

Both are natural products.

It has to be a yoghurt with priobotics in them Every day I have the fage O% fat Greek yoghurt and plain Kafir yoghurt on top of my oats. I have done this since I discovered that I could ward off bladder infections which I was getting regularly. Told my sister in law as she was having the same problem and it worked for her. So never used it for thrush but it might well work.

I either say I am on anti biotics or that I am buying it for my daughter.

I know that I do not have diabetes.

Maddyone, what made it worse was that one of the doctors had been my friend from school and through university. I had always been secretly in love with him. Tall, handsome, charming, intelligent and the softest of Irish accents. ?
I had been visiting my mother and became unwell. She had beeen a midwife and insisted DH take me to the local hospital, not the one I was booked into.
I don't know who was more embarrassed my friend or me. I insisted he leave the room, much to the annoyance of the consultant. blush

Marydoll
I think that was very brave of you, blanket on your face or not. I could just about accept students looking on, everyone has to learn, but not a photograph in a medical journal.

Pregnancy!

Marydoll Sat 23-Jan-21 09:25:13

When I was rushed into hospital with a very unusual condition, whilst in the last stages of pregnacy. I was asked if I would consent to my nether regions being photographed for a medical journal.

I agreed, as long as my face was covered with a blanket. blush

Santana. Phone consultations with photos!!! I would need to be a contortionist with my camera ???

maddyone Fri 22-Jan-21 23:31:40

Buy it in Superdrug or online. But also get checked out. GPs are working and are seeing some patients, but the GP has to make the decision if they need to see you. Your GP may simply prescribe the cream to be going on with and ask you to make an appointment to see her when things have quietened down in a month or two.

I was refused canister at local chemist because I was over 60, so I asked my daughter-in-law to buy it for me.!

Marydoll Fri 22-Jan-21 21:16:10

Lilypops, be careful of the bits. ?

Santana Fri 22-Jan-21 21:10:36

Our GP prefers phone call consultations with photos on line these days.
That should be interesting with thrush!

Lilypops Fri 22-Jan-21 20:27:11

Mary doll. Does it have to be plain yogurt? I have some peach flavour that is going out of date , Could I use that ? ?

Oldbat1 Fri 22-Jan-21 13:47:55

Sainsburys have it on the shelf as would Superdrug. I suffered from recurring thrush for years in my 20s and 30s and natural yoghurt worked wonders. In those days you couldn’t buy it over the counter likewise with cold sore ointment. GP appointments must have been easier to get in those days as I wouldn’t recognise a gp or tell you their name.

Elusivebutterfly Fri 22-Jan-21 12:43:36

I admit that I bought Canestan when in my early 60s and ignored the recommendation.
It was a bit later when I had a prolapse that I saw a specialist who told me I had vaginal atrophy which had caused the symptoms.

Marydoll Fri 22-Jan-21 12:34:58

The problem about using the ointment in the meantime is that if it is not thrush, it may have an impact on any swabs that need to be done or make the situation worse.

It's a difficult decision to make. Years ago, I was advised by a doctor to use plain yoghurt on a tampon to relieve thrush and it worked! Worth a try.

BlueSky Fri 22-Jan-21 12:01:30

Lilypop TCP! grin Bless you I think we’ve all done something similar!
I would use it in the meantime, if you can get hold of it and you can always try to make a GP appointment.

Lilypops Fri 22-Jan-21 11:43:54

River walk. Thankyou. The posters were only trying to help. I am well aware now that I must see my GP in case it’s something else, At 73. I am capable of deciding for myself , but again thanks for your concern.

Ringworm needs rebranding,
It’s a terrible name for a really quite innocuous affliction!
