If you paid for a check up (£23.80) and had follow up appointment for filling, should the filling be £65.20, or £65.20 less the £23.80 already paid. The appointments were less than two months apart.

Shouldn't you pay the larger amount up front which then covers both?

The last time I had treatment I paid £65+ which included the check-up/ treatment and clean & polish. if that helps.

Thanks. OH has just come back from dentist having paid £65.20. I am going to ring dentist as thought that should have been reduced by the £23.80 previously paid. Though I checked the nhs site thought I'd check here too, in case I'd misinterpreted it.

Been to the dentist today. I had a tooth out in December and back to fill the gap. Bridge not possible so having a plate at the back. I've gone for the dearest option as I'm told it is lighter due to the material used and the most comfortable. Have to go private for this one £950.....ouch!!

The clean and polish isn’t included glammanana you have to do that separately

NHS dental charges
There are 3 NHS charge bands:

Band 1: £23.80
Covers an examination, diagnosis and advice. If necessary, it also includes X-rays, a scale and polish, and planning for further treatment.

Band 2: £65.20
Covers all treatment included in Band 1, plus additional treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment and removing teeth (extractions).

Band 3: £282.80
Covers all treatment included in Bands 1 and 2, plus more complex procedures, such as crowns, dentures and bridges.

Waiting for call back from dentist....

You will need clarification from the practice??

Just had callback. Upshot was that as there was a hospital referral between check up and filling it constituted another course of treatment. I disagreed as filling appointment had been made at time of check up. They said if I was uncomfortable with the charge, they would credit the account so wouldn't have to pay for next check up.

Just be glad you have an NHS dentist doing checkups. Here in our smallish town in Scotland I have been forced to join an expensive dental plan , almost £40 a month , to make sure I get all the treatment I need. We only have one dental practice and they have limited appointments for NHS patients . I was fobbed off by the NHS dentist who said a painful tooth was fine . Once I had to have a checkup before getting on the plan the problem was found . Once my teeth are in perfect condition I can then join .

overthehill my dentist told me I might find the more expensive plate more comfortable but I went with the NHS one and it's been fine.

Those charges are all well and good if you can actually find an NHS dentist, I cant and have to pay a lot of money, just had a tooth out and a filling came to nearly £200...?‍♀️

Grandma11 Tue 09-Mar-21 15:45:41

I paid upfront after a checkup to have two further fillings and a Root extraction from an old broken crown, NHS total charge was £65.20, all to be carried out under Local Anaesthetic.
The appointment is the first one they had a slot for, in two weeks time, but l have been going to the same practice now for over 26years.

there does seem to be discrepancies in pricing with NHS dentists, mine is part NHS/part private and I honestly think they make up how much it costs as they go along. It's misleading to say band 3 covers crowns etc. It covers the procedure that leads to a crown, it doesn't cover the crown itself - well it doesn't at my dentist

I photographed this at my dental surgery yesterday! Hope it attaches ok.

Not all dentists do the scale and polish. Most want you to see the hygienist and this means you pay for Band 2.

Floradora9 same for me. There's a waiting list of 48,000 people in Cornwall needing NHS dentist. Apparently 30 more NHS dentists are needed here to ensure all get seen. Loads of private dentists !

In the end I went private. £17.50 a month but that only covers me for 2 check ups and 2 hygienist appointments plus 20% off treatments.

Oldbat1 Tue 09-Mar-21 18:05:35

No nhs dentists left where we live so no choice but to go private or not to have dental care at all. We don’t have mobile phone packages or sky tv choosing to spend on dental care. We are lucky to have option feel really sorry for people who don’t have the funds.

i have to pay a seperate fee for the hygeinist which is about £45 iirc I have not been since September 2019 because of covid. I like the woman but she is so rough BUT my teeth are absolutely amazing afterwards

Kittye Tue 09-Mar-21 23:01:31

JaneJudge cost of our hygienist is £59 so I think you’re getting a good deal !
