Please help! I had this once or twice before, but now it’s come back with a vengeance. You can blame me. I went to my sons house to celebrate Mother’s Day (tomorrow). Despite experience discomfort and the signs of an UTI, I drank some Prosecco. Alcohol only irritates it further, I hear. Now I can’t sleep, running to the toilet every 20 minutes. Drinking cranberry juice and lots of water, but it’s still burning ...Help!
If there’s anyone awake, please, some advice. Thankyou xx

Sorry but you’re doing all you can until or unless you can call your GP or 111 and find an all night chemist.
I’ve stayed on the loo all night before now with a crossword puzzle book and wrapped in a blanket, until I could get hold of my Doctor the next morning.
It’s horrid, painful and totally awful when it’s at night, just drink water and maybe take a Paracetamol and ibuprofen, it wouldn’t hurt you and might get you some sleep, but apart from that I’m afraid all I can offer is sympathy.

Esspee Sun 14-Mar-21 08:06:59

You can stop the cranberry juice right now. It has been shown not to work. Alkalinising drinks don’t work either.
Drink as much water as you can and take paracetamol or ibuprofen until you can get to a doctor or pharmacist.
My sympathy.

Yes, Cranberry juice is a real urban myth. Plain water is the only real answer for this. Keep drinking this glass after glass after glass. It can often by 'flushed through' the system.

Have a warm bath, take an over-the-counter pain killer. Contact 111 - they can make an appointment for you at your nearest A&E to see a Doctor. Once this horrible infection takes hold, often the only real answer is anti-biotics, but a sample is required to ensure it is the correct ab's.

Santana Sun 14-Mar-21 08:18:28

My sympathy too, cystitis is horrible.
I've had it so many times, and know my triggers now.
Cranberry juice is completely the wrong thing to do. Water is best.
Triggers for me are alcohol, sugar, not drinking enough water and spicy food.
I use Waterfall d mannose powder which keeps it at bay mostly, unless it's a bad attack.
Hope you feel better soon.

My commiserations, it is so painful. I can only echo the advice you've already been given for the immediate crisis. I used to get an attack every three or four weeks, and was in despair and exhausted. All that the doctors offered was antibiotics and more antibiotics, so I had to try to help myself.

I now take d-mannose powder in water twice daily, but the thing that has made the most difference is changing to a vegan-type diet, no meat, fish, eggs, cheese or milk i.e.no animal protein. It was hard at first as I love meat and cheese, but I would try anything to be rid of the misery of cystitis, I slipped off the wagon on a couple of occasions and within a few days was struck down again, so now it's a permanent diet for me and I'm used to it. I have had one or two attacks, but many months apart and am allowed to keep a course of antibiotics in the fridge for emergencies.( I can start these straight away with the proviso that I get a urine sample, pre antibiotic, to the surgery so that it can be checked to see if the right antibiotic is being used.)

I'm not telling other people to try this, only saying that if you keep getting infections, it's worth doing your own research to try to avoid the constant antibiotics which don't seem to do your general health much good.

Good luck to you and I hope you are spared this misery in the future.

I also was plagued by reoccurring bladder infections. One reason can be that doctors these days give very short courses of antibiotics such as three days. I don’t believe it does the job properly and the infection gradually develops again so a few weeks later it is back again. The practise nurse must have thought the same as she gave me a longer course saying “I’ll give you this or you will only get it back again”. Also found that by having yoghurt with priobotics in every day really help. Kafir (unsweetened) and that Greek 0% fat one ( look on the back to ensure it does contain them). Discovered this when I went on holiday in Dorset with niggling in the bottom of my stomach which usually heralds trouble. The doctor gave me antibiotics in case I needed them. For breakfast every morning there was a large tub of local yoghurt with a lot of these “bugs” listed. To my relief after having it every day it disappeared. When I got home I hunted out a similar yoghurt which I have had for two years now. I told my SIL about this as she too was having reoccurring infections. She told me recently that since buying this she too has had no more trouble. The other thing to remember is always try to empty your bladder properly. I find leaning forward after weeing works most times. Also I always have Cystopurin available to get me out of immediate trouble until I can get to a doctor. I have found that taking two of the sachets in a short interval takes most of the trouble away in the short term. I keep a couple of specimen tubes from the pharmacy handy so you can take one to the doctors. I even have a special jug in the bathroom to wee into for this purpose.

Get a bottle of potassium citrate, it works wonders, it eases the pain and discomfort until you’re able to get to the doctors.

I always keep a bottle in my bathroom cabinet,

Thankyou all ...finally got to sleep. Looked in my medicine cupboard and found a course of antibiotics (augmentin), which I always have for my chest problems. So took one at about 12.30, one this morning at about 7.30. -feeling better.
I have not heard of d-mannose, but will get to my pharmacy on Monday. Thanks all

Santana Sun 14-Mar-21 13:22:30

Glad you are feeling a bit better.
I'm not sure the pharmacist will have d mannose. I always get mine on line and it arrives very quickly. I use Waterfall but guess there will be others. It is a natural product made from the bark of a tree so health shop may stock it.

timetogo2016 Sun 14-Mar-21 13:37:53

Avoid anything acidic and dairy products.
That worked for me, you can buy over the counter medication if it`s hard to get your Gp app.

I have had recurring UTIs and 2 kidney infections since September. 10 lots of antibiotics. But my GP has sent a referral for me to see a urologist. I have read up on some of the tests to expect. Some don't sound very pleased but I will have done whatever needs to be done. These infections running my life and fed up of sore bits . I have always done everything we are supposed to cotton pants, only water on private bits, wiping the right way, drinking plenty of water etc. I have to laugh or I would scream.
Finally after having seizures for 32 years moving house and having a new neurologist he has given me 2 little tablets a day to take not had a seizure in a year. Which made a vast difference to my life for the better.

But now the UTIs when I have one stops me doing some things for a couple of days until the antibiotics work. The first kidney infection felt if I was being cut into 2 I am used to pain but that was on a different level. Second one I realised what it was so got onto the antibiotics quicker.

Found all alternative treats don't work for me only antibiotics get rid of the UTI. Hopefully when I see the urologist will find out why I am getting them. Until September hadn't had one for over 10 years. I am 62 . And it's not the anti seizure tablets causing them.

dogsmother Mon 15-Mar-21 07:12:14

Please do get checked out.
I’m sure if you you’re a cystitis sufferer you know the drill. It’s pretty miserable, but its best to checked.

grannysyb Mon 15-Mar-21 08:00:21

Last time I had cystitis the lovely GP I saw gave a five day course of antibiotics, she said she was only supposed to prescribe a three day course, but she found that they didn't work and patients were returning for more! So what's meant to save money actually increases costs!

Franbern Mon 15-Mar-21 08:30:39

I must say I am not convinced by efficiacy of DMannose. I know a lot of people swear by it, but do wonder if there have been any real, proper trials on this. Suppose it cannot do any harm to take them, except on your pocket!!!

So many myths surround this horrible infection. Cranberry juice is the biggest, I have even had Doctors tell me to drink that.

I suffered my first cystitus attack four weeks after giving birth to my first baby - did not even known what it was, ended up in A&E in Christmas Day in 1969. My next attack was three year later, whilst in hospital following the birth of my third baby.

Then I would get it every few months, and despite always trying the 'flush it away with water', always required anti-biotics to clear it up. Even, to the extent at one time of my GP giving my a signed, but undated prescription for these so I could use it as necessary!!!

Could never tie these attacks into anything I had or had not eaten. Did note that if I was at all run down they were more likely. Became to recognise the first signs and knew not to ignore them in hopes they would go away. I kept 'sample' bottles at home, so I could very quickly take one to my GP surgery in order to obtain an ab prescription as quickly as possible.

Once, few years back, when I was getting an attack every few weeks, a lovely (Lady), Doctor suggested I went onto Vagifem, 3x a day, slowly decreasing. This actually worked like a dream and I then went a good few years without a further attack,.

In the middle of my house move couple of years ago I got a bad attack, 7-day course of ab's seemed to deal with it, but it returned on Day 9. Over next five weeks, I had six different courses of anti-biotics, plus one trip to A&E late on a Saturday night, and a further one on another Saturday night to the nearest late-night GP service. Each time, the infection seemed different, needing different ab's.

I was by then feeling very unwell, and asked for referral to Urology, which I got within a week. There a camera showed a growth in my bladder. Far from that worrying me it was a relief - at least I now had proof I was not 'imagining' it all. As this brought me under the oncology department, everything happened very quickly. I was put on to a low dose daily ab's for continuous use. And, within four weeks was called in for this growth to be checked properly (under general anaesthetic). The growth was completely removed, and checked - and found NOT to be cancerous.

I stayed on that low dose daily course for a further six months, but was then advised to slowly reduce them until I stopped. By that time I had moved and was now under different GP and Hospital. Final check few months back, showed no regrowth, although bladder very scarred showing that I had constant cystitus attacks over the years. Since that growth was removed I have only had ONE cystitus attack - and that was when I was particularly stressed out in the final weeks prior to contracts being exchanged.

I still keep sample bottles and some dip sticks in my bathroom - but thank heaven, have not needed to use these now for eighteen months. I am scrupulously careful about ensuring that I do drink a large amount of fluid (mainly water), every day- even having a good drink on my loo visits at night. I never let myself even start to feel thirsty, and keep bottle of water with me wherever I go.

Sago Mon 15-Mar-21 09:58:52

D. Manoose tablets and a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda dissolved in water.
Stop the cranberry it can be an irritant.

PinkSweetPea Mon 15-Mar-21 18:58:07

I find Lemon Barley Water helps with some paracetamols. I have also used the D Manoose powder but it is quite expensive.

Witzend Mon 15-Mar-21 19:03:39

I’ve always found the cystitis relief sachets you can buy in supermarkets now, as well as Boots, help incredibly quickly with symptoms. Canesten is one brand but I just buy Asda’s - I always keep some in, just in case.
You take 3 a day for 2 days in water, IIRC, and if symptoms persist, see the GP.
I’ve only ever needed the GP once after taking those.
Touch wood haven’t had it for a couple of years though.

dahlia Mon 15-Mar-21 19:24:38

I had cystitis for many years, initially was told by my GP in the late 60's that it was "honeymoon disease" and we should hold back on the sex! I used to request a bottle of pot. cit. from my GP and just drank gallons of water until the symptoms subsided. Coped through a very busy working life and two children, but still had bouts until I had a hysterectomy aged 48. Only one "episode" of cystitis since. I do believe cranberry juice is useful, there must be some truth in it as my husband has been advised to take it daily by his urologist. Anyone who hasn't had cystitis wouldn't believe the pain, discomfort and sheer inconvenience! Good luck to all of you who continue to have problems - I really do feel your pain!

Fennel Mon 15-Mar-21 20:16:02

I also used to get recurrent cystitis. Couldn't bear the taste of pot. cit, but bicarb dissolved in orange juice is the same plus lots of tea which is a diuretic. And lots of water.
But it's just as important to go assap to the Dr. with a urine sample. Left too long it can affect your kidneys.
Also post menopause Vagifem helped me.

silverdragon Mon 15-Mar-21 20:24:33

CYSTOPURIN is quite good. Available in Boots & Sainsburys & elsewhere.

Oopsadaisy1 Mon 15-Mar-21 21:40:35

DD1 swears by a diluted mix of water and Apple Cider Vinegar, she’s on it at the moment.

Callistemon Mon 15-Mar-21 22:06:13

Alkalinising drinks don’t work either.

I did find that having a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in warm water does help if you catch it in time, but phone 111 or your GP.

I thought I was getting one just before I was due to have my 1st Covid jab and panicked, phoned 111, but found that 2 doses of bicarb sorted it that time.
The nurse who advised me when I phoned 111 said it is a salt, though, so be careful if you have high blood pressure.

Drink lots of plain water too.
