Cold showers first thing in the morning were compulsory at school. Put me off for life.

A freezing cold shower after a hot sauna makes your whole body tingle. I even looked at having a sauna fitted in my garage as I miss it so much. I can’t see public saunas being safe to use for the foreseeable future. My joints used to feel so much better, too.

MawBe. Total agreement with you.
I remember seeing him many years ago when he started the TV programmes about weight. He'd been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and came up with the 5:2 diet. My concern with it is that if you come off that diet, the weight is more than likely to come back on.

Over the years he's come up with so many different weight loss programmes. A few years after the 5:2 came the Fast 800.

I suppose a programme about healthy meals 24:7 wouldn't grab the interest of those wanting quick results.

I'll have a listen to the programme but cold showers - no thank you.

Yes, me too FarNorth. I drop in on BBC Sounds quite often

Yes, I smilelistened to these programmes and found them interesting.

I've recently discovered BBC Sounds and think it's wonderful.

Michael Mosley recommended taking 20ml of olive oil a day on one of his TV programmes. A few months later I was chatting with an elderly lady in a queue who looked late seventies. It turned out she was 96! She told me she had taken a tablespoon of olive oil everyday all her adult life. I was convinced.

I saw a programme recently where Michael Moseley was advocating cold showers. I'm sure it must be very invigorating and good for me, but so far I haven't plucked up the courage to try it. I must add that I like Michael Moseley very much. I find him down to earth and sensible.

I like him, seems quite an ordinary guy with a genuine quest to improve his own health. I now have kefir yogurt every day on my breakfast after listening to his programme about fermented foods and the 5/2 diet is still my go to when I want to lose a few kilos. I'm not keen on the cold shower idea though, I like it as hot as I can stand it! My physio suggested the standing on one leg, squats etc but I tend to forget about it. this was a few years ago so it's not something new.

Thanks for posting this. Not, necessarily for the programme in question but for reminding me about a Melvyn Bragg series that was mentioned on sounds just as I was falling asleep last night. I’d completely forgotten about it. I love BBC Sounds and always find something to listen to at night. I will listen to the Michael Moseley one though. The thing I miss most about not going to the gym and sauna is having a cold shower as the only time it’s possible to do that is when you’ve been in a hot sauna or steam room for a while and I used to feel so good afterwards.

I have to agree about the smugness, Maw*, but he does talk some sense.

MawBe Thu 20-May-21 11:05:41

He may well know what he is talking about, but I just find him smug!
He seems to have blossomed as a healthy living guru over the last couple of years, but he doesn’t inspire me!

Reading a few comments on the 'habits and rituals' thread about squats or standing on one leg while brushing teeth, has anyone been listening to this series on Radio 4?
I already do most of the things suggested, but draw the line at a daily 3 minute cold shower!
They mention simple ways to improve our general health on a daily basis.
