Cholesterol drinks like Benecol, or supermarket own brand are good at lowering cholesterol. Also blueberries.

I’ve been looking at Keto recipes and a lot of them use oil instead of fats.
Diet doesn’t always lower Cholesterol, although MrOops tried, he had to go onto tablets, these brought his Cholesterol down very quickly to a normal reading.

I make fat free scones. I cup SR flour, 1 TSP baking powder, some sultanas and three quarters of a cup of fat free yoghurt. They are lovely and light, best eaten straight away. I also use Laughing Cow extra light instead of butter/margarine in sandwiches etc.
There are lots of recipes for fat free cakes online.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner! Thanks everyone for your suggestions and advice. All this has come as quite a shock for us as my husband runs a LOT! Even the odd marathon. (mad bugger) It just goes to show that however fit you are physically its not always enough!

I believe that you should find the alternatives. For example, you can think about the date fruit

NHS eat well BHF and HEART UK are good sites for tips and recipes. I have very little meat but eat more fish I use substitutes like tinned lentils beans etc in chilli curries casseroles etc.

My DH lost two stone very quickly with these changes. Bulk up meals with more veg cut down on carbs and jams cakes etc.

I eat fresh lemon lime and grapefruit every other day. The acid probably not good for teeth but my cholesterol has reduced from 5.9 to 5. I really don’t want to go on statins so I am still eating the fruit.

I often replace meat with soya or tofu products. If you use a spread for baking use less as It has a higher water content.

If you do go on statins don’t eat grapefruit the two don’t mix well. I think you will enjoy the changes to your diet and food becomes more interesting,

I use low fat olive spread for baking. It works and makes the baking lighter. I use it because of losing weight. I use Quorn sausages, mince and chicken pieces. Coconut milk is great in porridge . Also in tea and to drink it doesn't taste of coconut. I buy shops own unsweetened.

The British heart Foundation have a lot of recipes on there site. I think they have a cook book.

I don't know whether the Flora Pro-Active spreads can be used in baking. They claim to lower cholesterol.

I used to make a chocolate cake where you mixed the dry ingredients then made hollows where you put oil and water and I think vinegar, mixed it all together and baked in the Pyrex dish. I can’t find the recipe but maybe someone else has it.

Try substituting flour for porridge oats, as well as using low fat oils in baking. Porridge oats can help reduce cholesterol and you really can't tell the difference when baked in cakes or biscuits. I also use honey as a sweetener when baking instead of sugar.

Coconut oil is supposed to be good - & actually lowers cholesterol.

My husband has high cholesterol levels and has been given 6 months to lower it with diet. I'm happy with cooking low fat main meals and lunches but I'm struggling with treats! He loves a cake/biscuit and obviously most of these are high in saturated fat. Other than a fat free sponge, I'm a bit lost. Can you make pastry with a low fat spread? How about biscuits or muffins? I know fruit is an adequate dessert/treat for many, but I think I'll struggle to convince my husband of this! Thank you.
