Does anyone have experience of this prescription drug used as a diuretic to help with slightly high BP?

I find it very good with no side effects other than extra trips to the loo in the mornings.

When I was first diagnosed with a problem with my blood pressure I was put on Lisinopril. Warning sheet did mention chances of a cough, Over next few months I developed a totally debillitating cough - would really rack my body making me lose total control of everything. I was then in my early 60's. It was very frightening both to me and to anybody who saw me having one of the spasms.

GP sent me to hospital for it and I underwent all sort of tests. The Consultant at the Chest Clinic finally decided that this coughing bouts (several times every day) we chemically induced by these bp tablets. He wrote to my GP saying I was not to have anything ending with 'piril' in the future. Took about three months for the effect of these to leave my system entirely, and was then put on to Telimersartin which worked well for some years, but then needed the Bendrofluazide tabs to be taken with them. For last several years these two work perfectly and - as far as I can make out - no side effectds.

Lisinopril and other ACE inhibitors are well known for causing a cough. Lercanipidine and others in that group cause swollen ankles.

I know statins can cause a cough. Didn’t know bendrofluazide did too.

Interesting thread. I've taken various tablets for BP since I had a heart attack in 2006 and each one had uncomfortable side effects including frequent weeing, cough and swollen ankles. And recently balance problems. And constipation.
Hospital tests - lying down then sudden standing up. So I don't take any now. A big benefit is I'm no longer constipated.

Alidih I had not been told of any age restriction for this drug. I was about 70 when originally prescribed it - and am now 80 years old and still taking it daily.

Hmm... not that I've noticed. I often take a nap after lunch but I've been sleepy after lunch since I was a teenager.

Isn’t bendrofluazide to stop swelling of ankles etc. As for the lettuce, does it make you tired? ‘The soporific effect of eating lettuce’….(Beatrix Potter).

Thank you for all the replies, folks. They're really useful.

I haven't asked to stop taking Bendrowotsit. I simply stopped a few weeks ago. Since then I've done three patches (about five days' each) of BP measurements at home at different times of day. As well as apparently not making any difference to my BP, I didn't notice any diuretic effect. However, I do notice the diuretic effect of lettuce and cabbage, which I've begun to eat more of as they also help with the constipating effects of the painkillers I take for arthritis.

In a little over a week (when I'll need another prescription of the other BP med I take) I'm going to report back to my GP the reasons why I stopped taking Bendro, namely the bedtime cough it seemed to be causing, which could sometimes be quite distressing, and the painful swelling of my feet and ankles in the evenings, and send him the BP readings.

I have taken it for about 30 yrs., first thing in the morning. If I am going on a long trip I don’t
Just check the side affects literature on diabetes. I have recently been diagnosed with this with no family prevalence or weight issues.

Ailidh Mon 19-Jul-21 11:13:58

I had it for quite a while, and so effectively (with diet and exercise too) that I was taken off it.

Then my BP went up (absence of diet and exercise) but by that time I was at or near 60, and deemed too old to be prescribed it. Boo. The thing they gave me instead, can't remember the name, gave huge mood swings.

BlueSky Mon 19-Jul-21 10:19:20

Polarbear yes unfortunately they are good to keep bp in check but can have side effects.

Nannytopsy Mon 19-Jul-21 09:11:32

I take 2.5mg daily and struggle with incontinence as a result. I probably visit the loo up to 20 times a day. All requests to stop bendroflumethiazide are ignored.
I have been prescribed another drug to calm my bladder but that has other side effects. If I am out for the day I drop the diuretic and do take the second tablet and order is restored!

Polarbear high sodium? I was taken off it because of low sodium!

Probably you’re right. Wrong amount of sodium! ?

Franbern Mon 19-Jul-21 08:17:26

I have been taking this every evening along with Telimersatin for many years.. Cannot even remember when it was started. Did not even know about its diuretic effect. Was given it to add to Telimersatin for my BP and it works very well. My bp is kept under control, whereas previously it was alarmingly high.
As far as I can make out it has no side effects for me.

Calendargirl Mon 19-Jul-21 07:45:58

My DH takes it, but it has never made him wee more.

Redhead56 Mon 19-Jul-21 01:40:02

It gave me panic attacks I was taken off it fifteen years ago as it reduced my potassium levels.

Greenfinch Sun 18-Jul-21 22:54:46

I have asked my GP on two different occasions to come off this medication as it has absolutely no diuretic effect on me but each time my BP went up so I returned to taking it. I have heard that it may protect against dementia in the elderly..smile

Kate1949 Sun 18-Jul-21 22:18:21

I've been on it for nearly 20 years 2.5mg along with another BP tablet. No problems at all.

BlueSky Sun 18-Jul-21 22:04:07

Polarbear high sodium? I was taken off it because of low sodium!

kittylester Sun 18-Jul-21 21:21:22

I take it too. I take it about 6.30 and probably wee 6 times before 10.00 am DH takes it and notices little difference.

Abuelamia Sun 18-Jul-21 20:33:32

I have taken it for 10years and no side effects. As for diuretic effect, if I am going out for a long walk in the morning I take it in the afternoon.

Polarbear2 Sun 18-Jul-21 20:16:38

I think this is the one they took my mum off as it gave her high sodium levels. She was very confused and this move made her a bit better. There’s an alternative to this drug now if it causes problems.

Baggs Sun 18-Jul-21 20:13:29

Did you actually notice its diuretic effect, lemsip?

lemsip Sun 18-Jul-21 19:57:48

I take a 2.5mg dose each morning along with my perindopril 4mg for high blood pressure. have been on it for at least 10 years. no problems
