Getting used of varifocals, help me please

Got around to having my eyes tested last month. Optician advised varifocals, so I ordered them! I have 60 days to try them, and I can take them back and change to single vision if I wish. Anyway I haven’t really worn glasses for single vision, I should have, but kept putting it off! I can see fine without glasses for distance, but obviously with glasses it’s more clearer!
So here goes, two weeks I am going to keep wearing them, but I think I look older with them. Also I do exercise classes and horse riding, which then is another problem, optician advised to to try contact lenses, ha ha getting old it not easy!
Anyone else had this problem ?
Ps I wrote this out with the glasses on!

Not that problem, no. When I first tried varifocals, they made me feel seasick! So I took them back. Three years on from that the quality of the lenses had improved dramatically (or maybe the optician was just buying better ones: my current varifocal lenses are made by Nikon, the camera people) and I now wear them all the time.

I am older (than I was and than many other people) so the thought of my possibly looking older by wearing glasses had never crossed my mind. I think the condition of one's physique and skin say more about age than a pair of glasses. After all, lots of kids wear glasses.

The only actual problem I've had with glasses is them steaming up when wearing a face covering. I've solved that by lodging the glasses lower on my nose but this means that shopping, for example, gives me a sore neck (it's arthritic anyway) because I have to tilt my head to be able to read stuff on jars and packets.

Hey ho. I'd rather be able to see things clearly than not. That's the bottom line. Enjoy your glasses ? ??

PS My brother wore glasses when horse-riding and had no problems.

I have been wearing varifocals for over 30 years and have never had a problem. I am careful when going up and downstairs and if slumped on sofa watching TV I need to sit them down my nose a bit or I am looking through the wrong bit of the lens! You need to adjust your head to focus properly. I love them but DH could not get on with them and went back to bifocals. Now there is the choice I have the slightly more expensive ones with the wider vision and they are better.

I have worn them for twenty years as Welshwife said up and down stairs be careful. When I first worn mine I miss judged them but I don’t like stairs so I was probably exaggerating the problem.

I have had them for years. I go for top of the range and they are great. They should fit properly for all distances but they do take a bit of getting used to. Go back and get them adjusted if they don't sit right. Or have bifocals or separate distance and close ones. Whatever suits your lifestyle. I find them invaluable for singing in a choir, so I can see the music and watch the conductor easily.

I’ve worn them for a few years now, my very good optician took me outside to get me practicing on steps. It takes a few days for the brain to ‘retune’, don’t give up too early, they’re brilliant.

I've worn varifocals for years. I've done all kinds of activities whilst wearing them. If you're worried about them falling off, then buy or make a strap that fits round your head like these.
My grandsons wear spectacles, and they have them, as they are very active boys, tree climbing, swinging, kayaking etc.

I have worn spectacles from a very young age and varifocals for around 15 years. I've never let vanity get in the way of being able to see properly and safely. I've led a very active life, cycling, running, climbing, sailing, rambling, all whilst wearing spectacles. You only get one pair of eyes.

I don’t know a life without glasses.
I’ve had varifocals since they first came out.
The only time there’s been a ‘problem’ is when the optician gets my complicated prescription wrong.
There was a situation about 3 pairs back when I knew immediately that the prescription was wrong. I told the young man.
His answer to me did not go down well. He said the worst thing he could have done you'll get used to them ? I told him in no uncertain terms that I’d been wearing varifocals before he was born.
I’ve never had a problem when the prescription is correct.

I have worn varifocals for 10 years and they can take time to get used to. At first I felt sick dizzy and had neck ache so I took them back and they replaced the lenses.
These days I have a pair for every day use a pair of sunglasses and reading glasses.
When I first started wearing them I was still horse riding so I tried contact lenses because I was afraid of my hat moving if l came off and it could break my nose.
Now lm due for new glasses lm going to get new lenses put in my sunglasses because they cost a fortune and are still good. I’ll have a pair for everyday use , new cheap reading glasses and possibly trying the best contact lenses l can find. It’s such a costly business but our sight is important. Saving on no holidays and being a little careful l find its worth it for nice glasses.
The secret to getting used to the varifocal lens is understanding that your brain and eyes connection becomes better over time. Good luck.

I'm long sighted too and found riding without specs no problem. Sailing and driving too if necessary, although it's easier to keep them on so you know where they are. I just wear safety straps for sailing like Minimoon suggested, so I don't lose them overboard.

Going downstairs takes some getting used to, your specs should make it possible provided you tuck your chin in. My last optician was of the "You'll get used to it" brigade so I changed opticians and now all is fine with my latest pair

Reading in bed doesn't always work well with varifocals so I just have a pair of cheap reading specs from Boots by the bed.

I wear varifocals, the first ones I tried were hopeless from a big chain and I returned them. The second pair are great and tbh I didn't have to get used to them, they were fine from the start but they were fairly expensive but worth it. My long sight is OK but I do need glasses to be legal driving but I don't wear them when riding as I don't need them. I have two pairs of glasses, one specifically for reading and working on my laptop, the second I use for driving, shopping and generally being around and about. It means I can read things as well as being able to recognise people from a distance, watch TV etc.

I wear varifocals and it takes me about three weeks to get used to each new pair (I thought I never would the first time I had them many years ago.)
I wouldn’t be without them.

Mollygo Sat 21-Aug-21 18:19:38

Varifocals, the best idea ever for me, especially the top of the range ones. I didn’t really need glasses for distance so at first I tried reading glasses on a chain. What a faff that was!
The only problem I’ve ever had with them was with looking at spreadsheets which seemed to skew at first. Now I guess my brain anticipates and adapts. Hope you enjoy them.

Kupari45 Sat 21-Aug-21 20:15:45

Been wearing Varifocals for two years now. First pair were not a success, so I returned them after 10 days.
Second pair were top of the range- amazing difference. Yes they cost more but I am so pleased with them. Within a week my brain and I had got used to them.

I've had varifocals for well over 20 years. I went to a small independent optician. I needed them for screen, close work and also distance. He said the more very expensive lenses would suit my requirements best, I took his advice, and I never had any problems.

The only time it is awkward is when I am driving and looking back over my right shoulder. I am looking through the wrong part of the lens then.

I read in bed on a tablet. That works better than a book for me, especially as I can enlarge the font if needed.

Also when choosing frames, he said the glasses must be over a certain size, as very small ones do not allow the varifocal to have enough space to function properly. I have no experience of horse riding.

mrswoo Sat 21-Aug-21 21:07:24

I've worn varifocals for about 15 years but also, more importantly, worked in an opticians for 20+ years. In my experience its quite unusual to go from not wearing glasses at all to being prescribed varis. I wonder if the optician was thinking more about income as opposed to what is most suitable for your needs. The fact that contact lenses were mentioned makes me think that they might just be after your money.
However, if you are happy to try both varifocals and contact lenses the choice is yours to make. Varifocals can take abit of getting used to - remember to move your head - not just your eyes - to see through the correct part of the lens. If they are making you feel dizzy or sick it may be that they are not sitting correctly and may need adjusting. By the way, there is no reason why you can't wear them for riding etc provided they are a good fit and you feel confident wearing them.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do but don't put up with them if you feel they really are not for you.

Callistemon Sat 21-Aug-21 21:20:24

I swapped mine in the time allowed for an exchange because they made me feel nauseous and I found steps difficult when wearing them.

I probably look worse in bifocals ?

Gingster Sat 21-Aug-21 21:27:25

No I couldn’t get on with them at all.
I wear them to play Bridge, so that I can see my own cards and my partners laid out on the table. Other than that I don’t wear them. The opticians seem to push varifocals.

If they still make you feel seasick after a few weeks then maybe go for a readjustment. In my opinion they take longer to get used to than you are prepared for. Once your head gets used to the best position for optimum vision you’ve cracked it. Hold your head high when walking too.

I love my varifocals .....took a day to get used to. This was yonks ago. Time for my 2yearly check up....must make appointment ?

I wear varificals, with Zeiss lenses, I love them. I buy modern frames, and I wear them all the time.
I dont have any problems at all.
