Yes, something like that has happened to me. My last extraction took more than 2 hours - the tooth crumbled mid extraction, but after more numbing injections, my dentist persevered and finally, every bit of the tooth was removed. I had a lot of bleeding after that, but with ice packs etc and rest, i was fine. TBH, I had a dentist phobia anyway, but now, I dread going. As a matter of fact, I haven't been since lockdown.. Please get this tooth removed. Don't be afraid, it needs to come out. Since you are going to Hospital for the procedure, you may have a general anaesthetic, but whatever it is, that tooth needs to come. Due to medication, I have lost a few teeth, but I'd rather that, than have a 'disintegrating tooth in my mouth. Good luck for Wednesday - you'll be fine ...

Try swilling salt water round your gums regularly until you can get sorted also take paracetamol and ibuprofen.

I went in (twice) for general anaesthetic, but, due to my claustrophobia (and waiting) my blood pressure shot up and I couldn't have it done.

I then went for sedation at a dental clinic (which, in fact, is very similar, just a lighter dose) and had no problems.

(btw, I found that a cotton bud, soaked in whisky, held on bad tooth, worked well)

Your dentist owes it to you to prescribe antibiotics & pain relief. It’s his job & I’m surprised he hadn’t done so. Act quickly.

Update: contacted dentist and he has prescribed antibiotics.

My dentist decided not to try extraction himself. Had course of antibiotics first then I was referred to local hospital for an undergum line extraction of double back tooth which had sheared off. First had xrays then date given to return for extraction in theatre. I was given choice of being knocked out or have it by injection. I drive myself there so injection chosen. Proper operating theatre, not permitted to walk myself in. Anyway didn’t feel a thing. In fact I didn’t believe it had been done. This included numbing injections, cutting gum, tooth removal, and stitching. Had to go to recovery ward forhalf hour then I drove myself home 30miles - all very straightforward. The actual event was less traumatic than the fear. Good luck.
