Does anyone take Psyllium Husks?

I've started taking a daily spoonful of Psyllium Husks for my digestion, but they taste horrible! It's like eating sweepings from the cowshed floor. It says to dissolve in juice or water or mix with food. Drink a full glass of water afterwards.

I've tried mixing with yoghurt (aargh!) and with creamed rice (yuk). You need to add water to the mix or it turns into a foul sticky paste. I wondered about custard or Ready Brek. Not sure I could cope with just water, might throw up before getting to the end.

Any suggestions from those who use it would help (if anyone actually uses it).

You could try Fybogel, which is ispaghula husk, very similar to Psyllium husk. It comes in boxes of sachets, and is orange flavoured usually. Dissolve a sachet in a glass of water, and drink before it starts to swell too much, the flavour is quite pleasant.

I second that ??

Fybogel contains Aspartame which is not good.

I take Psyllium Husk capsules. They work great and are easy to take.

Some great suggestions here, so maybe I'll try something different. The husks are difficult to take but I must finish them (about 30 days worth). After that I'm up for anything in a capsule ?

I find adding a teaspoon or two of oat fibre to my porridge works well for me. As others have said Ispaghula husk is good and my chemist sells a generic version of Fybogel which works just as well and is cheaper.

Holland and Barrett and similar places sell capsules, as do Simply Supplements online. Colon Cleanse has other ingredients and is more expensive, but basic Psyllium does the trick just as well. The powder is revolting, but swallowing the caps is fine.

H&B supplements are always weaker than other brands, so you might want to take more than the recommended dose. Start with what it says on the bottle and go up one at a time if you need to.

Remember that they bulk up your digestive system, so they work whether the problem is that you need to encourage it or slow it down.

Psyllium and isphagula are one and the same - two different names.

I bought some capsules of psyllium husk from Holland and Barrett this week - 6 capsules a day.

I think you can get capsules, as far as I remember they come under the name of colon cleanse or similar. I find inulin works really well and you can have it in coffee.

No I haven’t tried that but I have a large bag of turmeric which I can’t seem to tolerate the taste. I know I can put it into curry’s but any other options would be preferable. Any ideas plsSe?

You can buy gelatine capsules, fill them, then you can swallow without tasting the stuff.
Never used turmeric myself except in cooking but I did read about it once.

A small glass of prune juice seems to help my digestion too.

Like Luckgirl I add milled flax seeds and raisins to my muesli.

It does indeed turn to a paste if you leave it more than the blink of an eye - and it does just this in your innards, which is why you must drink a LOT or you will get a paste ball in your guts.

All you need is fibre, and flax seed will give you that with less discomfort.

Bowels not Bowles!

If it’s to get your Bowles moving OP then I prefer not to take psyllium husk. I have porridge in the morning, mid morning snack of a prune or two plus 4 or 5 walnuts does the trick for me.

No but I’ve started taking Inulin. A teaspoon a day with my yoghurt and it seems to be pretty good.

shysal I've got the Healthspan one which says to take a dessertspoonful not a teaspoon! I can understand the need to move fast, it sets into a paste with yoghurt so extra liquid needs to be added. Maybe I'll try the fruit juice.

Chestnut, I have experimented with the quantity and a large teaspoonful is just right for me, but I did start with a dessert spoon. I have to say I am sometimes reminded of the 'I'm a Celebrity' contestants drinking liquidized insects or animal parts smile! The consistency is similar as you get to the dregs at the bottom!

I take it daily, it does a good job. I use a heaped teaspoon of the powdered version (lots on Ebay), and whisk with strong fruit squash. If I don't drink it quickly it will set into a gel which I wouldn't be able to get down!
Good luck!

Luckygirl Thu 26-Aug-21 17:36:13

Milled flax seed is the equivalent. I sprinkle is copiously on my morning All-Bran along with nuts and sultanas. Yummy - and speedy!!!

GagaJo Thu 26-Aug-21 17:29:07

I've taken it before. I mix it with a cold drink and swig it down like medicine. I don't think you can make it palatable. Have a coffee ready, as a chaser!

If it’s that bad seek an alternative ! What’s wrong with your digestion ?

Jaxjacky Thu 26-Aug-21 16:50:26

I tried, once, ended up in the compost bin, truly revolting. I have prunes with other fruit for breakfast instead
