I had a hernia repair 3 weeks ago. Apparently, I remember nothing about it, I couldn’t urinate but wasn’t allowed home until I had. I began drinking a lot of water and began to hallucinate and then became unconscious. That was Friday evening and I woke up in an entirely different hospital some miles away and in intensive care on the Monday. Apparently the drinking had washed all the salts out of my body. Since then I spent a week in the hospital and with some encouragement from a very supportive family I was allowed out as long as I kept to a restricted allowance of 1 and a half litres of water a day and have a blood test in two weeks time. Once I got home I worked on getting my appetite back and walking so have done well in that direction. I eat a banana every day for potassium, added some salt to my diet, plenty of fruit etc. My problem has been coughing when laying flat, phlegm in the mouth and throat, a bulging feeling in my ears and now an irritating feeling in chest The hospital gave me antibiotics which I finished when I came home. I spoke to a doctor on the phone who seems to think it could be a post op cough and says he will see me when I have had my blood test. My question is how long does this take to recover from this weak, strange feeling.. I was a fit, just turned 80 year old, before this occurred. How long before I feel normal? Thank you.
