My 14 year old DGD2was picked up from her boarding school on Wednesday with "a cold". Her LFT was negative , but her PCR was positive! She has to stay in her room now until Monday week!

Thanks ladies for you time & input
Hardly moved all day, throat still hurts and think paracetamol is keeping headache at bay but it’s there underlying

It sounds more like the cold that is doing the rounds all over the UK. I had your symptoms last week. Had 3 days feeling lousy. Now I am feeling much better but have the occasional coughing fit sounding like a 60 a day smoker. And no, it isn't Covid.

Sorry Professor aTim Spector.

When should I get a COVID test?

If you feel newly unwell, especially if you’re suffering from any of the common COVID symptoms, you should stay home and get a COVID test, even if you’ve been vaccinated. This is particularly important if you notice any changes to your sense of taste or smell.

A positive result from a lateral flow test is highly likely to be true. However, a negative result from a lateral flow test is not reliable enough to be sure you’re definitely not infected, so if your symptoms persist it’s best to get a PCR test to be sure.

If you’re a ZOE COVID Study contributor and report any of the 20+ symptoms consistent with COVID-19, you’ll be offered a test through the app.

At the moment, you can only get an NHS PCR test if you have any of the ‘classic three’ symptoms of cough, fever and loss of smell (anosmia).

We’re calling on the UK Government to expand this list now that the most common symptoms have changed, particularly for those who are vaccinated.

Don't think lateral flo tests find new variants . A PCR test is essential!

I’ve been really ill since last Saturday. Temperature started rising, on Sunday it was 40.4 and I was delirious on the bed by myself. Since then my temp has stayed up in the 38’s and a wet cough. Seven days and counting. Feeling a little better so hopefully on road to recovery. Nothing to do but sit through it. I am not going to hospital for any reason whatsoever even if it’s fatal. Rather be at home than on a ward with other people dying. Being a widow is so scary when you are ill, not that it’s much fun at other times either.

LFT often show negative when not you need a PCR test
My granddaughter recently had the worst chest infection you could imagine I was sure it was CoviD. But PCR tested her negative so there are a lot of other things around

Have you tried Tyrozets? They are small lozenges which come in a pack of 2 tubes; you suck them and they anaesthetise the throat. Always my go-to when I have a sore throat.

Good luck with the Covid test, hope it comes back negative!

I woke in Tuesday with snotty nose & sore throat Went for pcr test yesterday 10:30 am & got results 9 am today - negative I think the flue bug is doing it’s rounds along with covid

Gargling with soluble Aspirin around 4x per day was the only thing that relieved mine. The Chemist recommended and it worked.

Grannynannywanny Fri 24-Sept-21 15:05:26

Clio51 unfortunately a negative lateral flow result isn’t reliable if you have symptoms. They’re for routine testing in folk with no symptoms. Any symptoms even mild needs a PCR test.

This screenshot is from the govt. website. Hope you feel better soon.

I've had Razor Blade Throat twice since August Bank Holiday so I feel for you Clio51

Spoke to my GP after day 6,she thought virus but said do the C19 gag/poke your brains out test. I've done 3 now, all negative but better to do the tests and have some idea about C19.

I used everything I could think of to alleviate the symptoms. I found mixed pain meds and throat sprays and rest worked best for me. But I'd gargled with Aspirin, sucked throat sweets gave anything I could think of a try I hope you find something that helps you through.

Get well soon flowers

There is a nasty throat infection doing the rounds so once you have got hopefully a negative test then I think you can probably assume it is that and sit it out?

SueDonim Fri 24-Sept-21 14:28:28

Definitely do a Covid test but I will say that whenever I’ve had razor blade throat it has always, without fail, been strep throat and antibiotics required. It can make you feel as ill as a very ill thing, that’s for sure. sad flowers

You need pcr test if you have symptoms. Not lft. I had pcr test on Tues and still waiting for results so you may need to be patient.

Clio51 Fri 24-Sept-21 14:24:22

Not pcr
Lft but apparently there not very good ?

Clio51 Fri 24-Sept-21 14:19:16

Forsythia Fri 24-Sept-21 13:56:20

I ordered those this week and they were here within a day. I was most impressed. Now we’ve got them if we need them.

MayBeMaw Fri 24-Sept-21 13:55:19

Did we ever think there would be a time where we would say “well if you are lucky it might only be flu” ?

JaneJudge Fri 24-Sept-21 13:51:46

There is a throat infection virus going round and a very nasty cold one but it's best to rule out covid. I don't know if you are all aware but you can order a box of 7 LFT off the NHS website? information here

Grannynannywanny Fri 24-Sept-21 13:49:54

Crossed posts!

Grannynannywanny Fri 24-Sept-21 13:49:07

Sounds like you need to book a PCR test

Shelflife Fri 24-Sept-21 13:48:41

Yes very sound advice. Please go for a PCR test today.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 24-Sept-21 13:46:56
