Another post on the occasion of my return home after my breast surgery yesterday. As predicted by my super consultant breast surgeon, I had a single mastectomy yesterday afternoon. Here I am to tell the tale after my very good experience. As I was on the afternoon list I presented myself mid morning & was signed in & prepared by kind & compassionate staff. Operation on time @ 3:30pm, recovering @ 5pm.
Here I am back home with a cup of tea by a welcome fire with my lovely daughter who picked me up earlier this afternoon.
It’s about 8/9 weeks since I asked you for reassurance about my condition and received so much help & kindness from many Gransnetters. It has made the ‘journey’ very much less worrying than it first seemed. Also, I feel I’ve made a connection with the caring people who’ve private messaged me. Thank you all.?

My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1991 at the age of 60. She had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy, followed by tamoxifen treatment for five years. She was cancer free until 2003 when the cancer returned in the same breast. Stage 2. A single mastectomy followed and a little more radiotherapy - limited because she was close to the lifetime dose the first time round. She had some lymph glands removed from her neck and underarms which caused some problems with arm mobility, but after physiotherapy she was fine if a little restricted in movement. She’s now 91 and has had no recurrence. I hope this gives you some encouragement, and I wish you well with the surgery. As others have said, we’ll be holding your hand throughout and sending all the good vibes we can. Please come back and update us, and let us know how you’re getting on. Update on my results I have grade 1_2 small hormone driven cancer in my remaining breast which is good news for me after last aggressive cancer in other .I have decided to have mastectomy so will be around Xmas time ,have to start tablets before .Take care all

However, stage 2 is not bad. They don't use the word 'cured' now, but 'treatable'.

Once you've done the treatement, you could well find you have a new lease of life. I definitely got that. Have worked in China, Spain & Switzerland since cancer. I wouldn't have dared before.

It's scary. Take a deep breath, and do it. One step at a time.

The team will refer to curative intent when stage 2.... with stage 4 cancer they will refer to treatable but not curable

They only ever used the word treatable with my Stage 3 cancer. Never curative.

Hulahoop; I’m thinking of you today, truly I am. My current experience here in North Wales has been one of real hope & optimism from all the professionals I’ve met. One tends to focus on the negatives (I know I have) but everyone in breast care says that situations like ours are what they deal with every day. Sending you my very best wishes as you attend the follow up appointments. ?

Miss M and Hula - I'll follow your progress on this thread and cheer you both on quietly - well, you won't hear me but I will be cheering loudly - I don't do quiet!

Miss M you've had loads of support and so will you hulahoop, our Grans are a lovely lot.

I know so many more people that have survived cancer than not - the treatment these days is fantastic.

I had a lumpectomy and 5 weeks of radiotherapy but had a recurrence in the same breast 4.5 years later and then had a mastectomy followed by years of Tamoxifen. I've been clear ever since - clocking up 23 years now. Take heart. I wish you both well.

I had biopsy in remaining breast yesterday had mastectomy 5yrs ago ,don't know what's in store yet I'm teary but hopeful today can you all keep your fingers crossed for me.

Dear MissMarpleknows I too have recently been diagnosed with BC. Stage 1 grade 2 8mm early breast cancer picked up by screening and have my op too in early December. I'm a little younger than you at 57 but have been blown away by the quality and speed of the care and treatment I've received. Treatment options for BC are incredible and getting better all the time. Yours like mine was picked up by screening so "100% sortable" as my consultant said. I wish you well and am sure you will have a positive outcome. A further update about my breast cancer & treatment. I had another appointment with the breast surgeon today during which I’ve had the date for a mastectomy procedure in early December. I’m very relieved to have a way forward. I want to thank you all for your support during this very stressful time of waiting for tests, & results of tests. It really has been a comfort and has made a huge difference to me.
So … thank you all, from the bottom of my heart!

I know several people who have had a breast cancer recurrence. They were treated and still here years later.
