Is there an end to sciatica ?

Oh I wish! I find an ice pack helps to ease the pain, massage and heat seems to aggrevate more. Stretching can help too.

My OH has this a few years ago and found that NHS will not do anything for 6 weeks and he was in despair, but suddenly realised that the 6 weeks were nearly up and he was feeling better. He was bad, for three days he couldn’t get off the sofa ( he used a bottle ?), but there is light at the end of the tunnel and he has been ok for 5 years now.

In my experience, it lasted for two to three weeks, and after that came and went with no particular pattern, lasting from two days upwards. I really sympathise, it is a pain that really grinds you down.

Perhaps a visit to an Osteopath, rather than a Chiropractor, may help. They use different techniques. I use one whenever I have a problem with any bony/joint issues.

I thought I had sciatica, it wasn’t it was GTPS.

It was excruciating, once the physio had diagnosed me it was a case of gentle exercise and rest.

Please check it out, a simple diagnostic test is to stand on one leg for 30 seconds, if the pain is extreme when standing on the affected it is possibly GTPS..

Yes it does but, sorry, there are no guarantees it will not come back. It is unusual to get really bad back pain with sciatica though. Have a look at the NHS site. Good advice on the site.

My first time, 15 years ago, I ended up using two sticks. No back pain but pain down the leg, numbness and pins and needles on the outside of my foot. I couldn't push up onto my toes on the left side (where the pain was). My heel wouldn't budge off the floor!
Doctor said it wasn't sciatica but after 3 visits he referred me to the hospital. Consultant disagreed with doctor and sent me to physio but it didn't help. I was recommended a chiropractor and he got me back on my feet without sticks after three visits. He recommended Pilates and I've attended a class ever since. As Calmlocket says: stretching helps.

The nerve has trapped again a few times but I do pilates stretches at home as well now and after a 3 - 4 days it's gone. This youtube video is brilliant. I take ibuprofen and use heat packs.

Mine went after an operation.

A friend had an MRI which confirmed sciatica. Painkillers seemed to do little but it did go after about 5 weeks. Returned again after a few months and he bought a tens machine which helped immediately so only a few days that time. Hope yours goes soon.

I agree with Squiffy. I have had crippling sciatica two occasions and each time it was an Osteopath who sorted it out in a couple of treatments. As it is caused by trapped nerves it makes sense that someone who manipulates your skeleton can help. I’m sure this is a very dumbed down way of explaining but all I can say is it worked for me. You have my sympathies, it’s a dreadful pain, I hope you get sorted out soon.

I have bouts of it and there doesn't seem to be a reason but it has eventually gone away each time. There are several youtube videos showing stretches which can help.

Mine went after 3 operations.

I had it for over 4 years,only to be told after an MRI scan that it was and still is a problem with sacrum bone in my spine it is leaning on two nerves and theres a cyst on it too.
Bl..dy painfull all day long.

I have got my new knee ( surgery was on Thursday 28th October) but today I feel I have hit a wall. Just wanted some support to give me a bit of a kick up the old bottom really as I spent so much time like a caterpillar last night wriggling trying to find a sleeping position bum knackered today! I am a side sleeper (fetal position with My dummy dipped in virol .. those were the days!) And last night I just wanted to scream in frustration. My bottom cheek hurts and we have had a new super duper mattress so I don't understand that either.
I just want some support please as am having a bit of a " Mardy woe is me type day"

I have 3 disc's slipped onto my sciatic nerve which causes massive pain today I am expecting a telephone consult from a physio as to the way forward,how they expect to help me over the phone is beyond me but I have to go down this route before an MRI scan can be arranged.
Its so so painful and difficult to get out and about and having just come to the ending of 2 weeks with C19 it makes life so very miserable at the moment.I also find heat pads can ease the pain I found the TENS machine made no difference to my pain.

Sciatica is excruciating. My latest episode cleared up quite quickly after doing nerve glides, wish I'd tried it years ago.

Jonnie perhaps you might get more responses if you start a new thread, as I know several Gransnetters have had knee replacements and might have some good advice.

My sciatica seems to go on and on and on and the GP won't suggest anything except paracetamol.
