Broken Pelvis

Hi All, my mum aged 94 fell and fractured her pelvis - the Illiac area. She’s been in hospital for 2 weeks the last week in a community hospital where she is getting great care.
She has been getting a little physio to encourage her to get back to the mobility she had (lives alone, carers twice a day, partially sighted and limited mobility - walking frame). She’s very independent and ‘with it’ and the plan is for her to go home in the next week.
So my question is to anyone who has experienced this kind of break and how reasonable it is to be going home - have so soon in my view? Everything I read says maintaining mobility is key but with close medical support/recview for up to 12 weeks.
Thanks

So sorry to hear about your mum. It does seem very early to be sending your mum home. Make sure she is properly assessed in hospital as her needs may have now changed.
My mum broke her hip at 88 she spent two weeks in hospital and then a further 3 on a rehabilitation ward. She had to be able to make a simple meal and wash and use the toilet safely, can she do these things yet?
She may need a falls alarm as well or does she already have one. The hospital have a care of duty to your mum, don’t let them send her home unless you think she can safely manage with carers . Good luck I hope she’s on the mend soon .

She needs proper assessment before going home. OT needs to visit to see if any aids might help her independence, and the carer visits need to be reassessed. Is she OK at night - can she get to the toilet in the night? etc. etc.

The last thing that you want to happen is for her to fall again and break something else so everything needs to be in place for her safety before she sets foot in the door.

Please make sure your mum is assessed, and care put in place before she is discharged, as she should be able to get 6 weeks of reablement support.
That's probably the wrong word, as a bright spark on here pointed out to me once before.
The point being that once she us discharged, she is no longer eligible.

It happened to my mum, which meant an emergency trip to a and e, where we were told "too late!" and she had to move in with me as she couldn't manage.

MIL broke her pelvis in 2 places after a fall, but wasn’t diagnosed until 3 weeks afterwards, due to a less than diligent GP, but my Sister in law ended up taking her to A and E where she was xrayed and then admitted, I think she was there for 3 weeks or so, whilst she was in hospital, they organised the care she needed for 6 weeks after she was discharged.
During this time my SIL had time to organise a stair lift for her, get her assessed and arrange for carers to come in.

I fractured my pelvis and really couldn't get around for two months with improvement after that. Getting in the car was difficult, going upstairs etc. In fact moving at all for the first few weeks was very painful. I was 20 years younger than your mother Coopster so she will need help and support for at least three months. I had 10 sessions of physio which really helped
