Hip replacement pre/post operation pls

The wheels seem to be grinding exceedingly slow GrannyLaine but you seem to be getting more attention re aids and so on than certainly I did. No ne as interested in my furniture measurements even though I offered them and was provided with only two sticks and a raised toilet seat. I bought some items and have coped with what I have.
I hope you get something more concrete like a date and suggest you ask directly. It’s pointless and a waste of everyone’s time to keep pre-assessing if an operation date isn’t fixed.
I am 3.5 weeks post op and though I can’t get bottoms on, socks etc in particular am walking quite well. You will be too, before you know it. Best wishes

GrannyLaine. Thank you for asking after me! I have been following all the posts with interest but am still waiting for a date for my surgery. As I mentioned before, I had my pre admission appointments in February, one by phone and the other at the hospital for all the tests. That seems such a long time ago now. I have a phone appointment with Surgical Rehab on 17th May and have to measure the heights of various pieces of furniture, toilets and the width and height of the bath. I did tell them twice that I couldn’t remember the last time I had used the bath when they rang me last week (we do have a separate shower!).
Today I received a letter with another telephone ‘Pre admission appointment’ for 31st May, which is progress of a sort, but there is nothing like an actual date for the surgery. Never mind; at this rate I will still be at home for the Jubilee weekend with the family.

If you are spending a lot of time in bed please watch heels and bottom for sores, they start small snd slowly, no one notices but quickly get worse if not dealt . with.Heels , ? no not those heels, but those on the back of feet Are susceptible and need protection.
I am nursing a small one which needs to be off the ground touching nothing. Will get it checked on Friday next when I see the physio again.

Hello to all hipsters, and thank you for making this thread so helpful.

I’m so glad that my op is nearing closer.
My mobility is now at an all time low.
I can hardly walk at all, even walking to the loo from my bedroom is difficult.

I’m spending most of my time lying on my bed, when I’m not actually in bed, as that’s the only way I am comfortable.

I have a perching stool arriving today.
I thought that it might help as the only chair that I’m half way comfortable on is a 30 year old plastic garden chair!

Re groin pain. Yes, I’ve been getting that off and on for nearly ten years. What an idiot , I should have guessed that something was going on.

I actually used to whack it with my fist, as it felt like something needed to get back into place.

What I find helps now is a Curaheat pad. I just slip it under the side of my pants, and it sits nicely in the site of the pain.
The heat lasts all night.

I’ve got loads of different heated things, we really are like a branch of Boots here.
Speaking of which, I’m now taking a lot of painkillers.
It’s intolerable otherwise.
I hope that it won’t be difficult coming off them.

I heartily recommend elastic laces. I find the ‘Pop band’ ones the best.
I put them in trainers, which along with Ugg boots are pretty much the only shoes that I can wear.

Yes it was groin pain that I first had too, so a bit disappointed it’s still there . GrannyLaine I also have seen first hand ? but it was over 50 years ago , perhaps hopefully things have been revised somewhat ! I’ll discuss with the physio . Enjoy your weekends everyone

It was the groin pain that led me to my gp to begin this journey, it has mostly gone now though had a longer than expected walk yesterday ( over 2 miles) and groin is now slightly bothering me so taken paracetamol and hope that might help.
I really enjoyed the walk yesterday, had no pain at the time but was very tired afterwards . Resting today.
Having a night away at the seaside tomorrow and planned more walking bug maybe not as far but the good thing at the seaside is there are plentiful benches along the prom .
I see the physio too next week so will check with her.
My scar is less sore and using vaseline to help soften it .
So much has happened in the last 3 weeks but never thought it would be walking so far, so soon painlessly.
I only have 6 more injections and won’t be sorry to finish them.

I think some surgical approaches reduce the likelihood of groin pain. There's such a lot of info about that it's confusing. Also perhaps the wear and tear on hip joints is affected by a person's habitual gait. This would explain its persistence after surgery if the person continues to walk in the same way. New shoes can be a help in this case. I'm just theorising here

Logically Aveline, if the groin pain resulted from physical process of the surgery, we would all have it. I've seen Orthopaedic surgery first hand working in operating theatres and have avoided YouTube like the plague.

I'm absolutely sure groin pain is a thing. I've discussed it with other hip replacement people too. I'm just lucky I didn't have it. I was just wondering about the mechanism leading to it. The surgery is pretty brutal. Have you seen any of the videos of it on YouTube? If not, don't!!

Prior to surgery my pain was definitely in my groin, down my inner thigh and into my knee and always worse at night when lying down but also when walking any distance. I seem to remember quite a lot of people on the Bonesmart site talking about using cold packs to relieve groin pain postoperatively. so it definitely is a thing SusieB50 Good idea to talk to your physio.

I never had groin pain at any point before or after the op. My pain was in the joint itself when I put weight on while standing or walking.
Is groin pain maybe referred pain or due to the surgeons having to push and pull muscles, tendons and ligaments about during the op. If so then maybe the exercises might help?

I think I will discuss with the physio next week . The pain in my groin is sometimes as bad as it was prior to surgery ?

SusieB50 walking a mile sounds pretty impressive & the aching will only be those muscles stretching. I've not had any groin pain since my surgery and actually, looking back I was pretty much pain free at 3 to 4 weeks. That said, my muscles weren't very strong and weight bearing on my new hip took me a while. That has improved immensely. I'd love to be able to say its because I've done my exercises each and every day as advised. It wouldn't be true I'm afraid. Just moving about normally, my muscle strength is returning. I've been up the loft ladder & into the loft today getting ready for a Car Boot Sale.

Brilliant news travelsafar it will be here before you know it . So pleased to have had my toenails cut today at the chiropodist . I got a lift there and walked back probably around a mile so not that far . All good but ached quite a bit . Physio again next week , I have been a bit more vigilant with the exercises over the last few days . Does anyone still have groin pain ( 3+ weeks now) ?

Glad lunch went well Susie, enjoy the walk back from the chiropodist, I am going to try a longer walk tomorrow too, just to see how it goes, as have been on the careful side up til now and need to increase to at least a couple of miles.
I will take both sticks and keep an eye out for uneven ground.

My elastic laces arrived for my trainers today, I feel much more secure even though they aren’t as tight as usual . So I have no excuse for not increasing my walking . A friend is dropping me at the chiropodist, and I will attempt to walk back . Trouble is that I am not able to do my usual back exercises or swim and my arthritis in my spine is complaining! But walking should help that too . I had lunch with some old friends yesterday and we were laughing that our conversation was mainly about our aches and pains, up and coming hospital appointments or our dental issues !

I have found the sticks I was given easier than the crutches I already had especially with stairs etc. My balance is very poor too so understand why you are nervous, and don’t want to fall or trip.
Have to confess am not doing the few exercises I have been given either but my gait us pretty good (according to physio) but I really should. I will once I finish my cup of tea.

silverlining well done ! I still need one crutch indoors unless I’m just moving around in the kitchen or bathroom where there are handholds . I feel too vulnerable outdoors without two crutches , my balance was never great and I’m terrified of falling and ruining all the good work .I think I probably haven’t been as vigilant as I should have with the exercises as my muscles still feel a bit weak ?.

Yes private hospitals aren’t any use if there is even a whiff of complications.

My hospital closed on good Friday, everyone was discharged (ready or not, and i didn’t feel ready) and new patients back in after Easter.

Lateral flow negative?. Thank goodness as I have my first “outing “ today . I’m walking to a local pub for lunch with friends -not far so should make it but if necessary I can get a lift back as one couple will be driving . He is still waiting for his hip replacement and can hardly walk poor chap, but he has other health complications so could not be sent via the NHS to a quick in and out job as I was at the private hospital . I was so lucky. I seem to spend all day doing minor chores that took minutes before, I can’t believe the morning has nearly gone and I’m only just dressed!
