* If the GP refuses to give you an appointment, at least take a urine sample to the surgery and ask for it to be sent away for analysis then phone for results if they fail to let you know.*

Agree - I’d advise anyone to insist on this. They can also do a urine ‘dip test’ to confirm infection and prescribe broad spectrum antibiotics while they wait for a lab test to identify the type of infection.

UTI's do have the potential of being very dangerous. Should NEVER be ignored and MOST DEFINITELY not attempt to be treated with any sort of over-the-counter or off the net, drinks or pills, etc.

Franbern I agree

And please do not be fobbed off by anyone at the GP surgery, a receptionist telling you to go to the chemist to buy a bottle of something or other.

If the GP refuses to give you an appointment, at least take a urine sample to the surgery and ask for it to be sent away for analysis then phone for results if they fail to let you know.

Barmyoldbat I've only just seen your news. Holding you and your daughter close in thought. Hoping for the best possible outcome. flowers

Franbern, my daughter was the same. Had a uti, went into hospital because she had a fall and hit her head. Once there they found a mass in her bladder. You just cannot treat a UTI yourself or buy online medication to treat it. You have to have medical advice

Franbern Sat 26-Feb-22 08:56:17

Back in 2019 I started a UTI. From previous experience both I and my GP surgery knew I would need anti-biotics. Over the next four weeks, I had six different ones of these, one visit late one Saturday night to the Walk in GP section at my local hospital and a further one the following weekend at to emergency GP for my area.

Each time, the ab's seemed to work at first, then, even before the course was finished it was obvious the infection was still there. During that time I had only actually be seen by a Health Care worker at the surgery. I then wrote a letter to the surgery giving full details, and demanding referral to local Urology department at hospital.

Got this pretty quickly and there, they found a growth in my bladder. I was then put on a very low dose of ab's to be taken daily until I actually went into hospital for that growth to be removed and checked. Must say this all happened extremely quickly.

Fortunately, it was benign - but I now have to have annual checks as it could re-grow.

UTI's do have the potential of being very dangerous. Should NEVER be ignored and MOST DEFINITELY not attempt to be treated with any sort of over-the-counter or off the net, drinks or pills, etc.

Barmeyoldbat do hope you have some better news about your daughter. Thinking of you.

hulahoop hope the antibiotics work their magic soon.

There are only 2 antibiotics that work for me Cefalexin 500mg 3 times a day 7 day course and Nitrofurantoin 100mg twice a day 7 day course. Which I had alternatively for each infection.

Unfortunately only 3 antibiotics work on me. Always knew I was weird.

Potassium citrate available at a Chemist was always the first line cure.
It’s been effective for me in the past.

Please, please don't rely on Potassium citrate or cranberry juice.

Take a sample to be tested at your surgery and get some antibiotics from your GP if necessary

Please get treatment as quickly as possible. I started with an ITU last Saturday, I treated it with Trimethoprim (I always keep a short course of antibiotics in for such occasions, as Fanny says you can buy them online) but despite this the infection progressed to my kidneys. I knew because the UTI didn’t clear and I started to feel ill and got severe backache. Luckily I could get an appointment with my GP and she insisted I went to the surgery to be examined (I was feeling rough so was hoping she’d prescribe over the phone) because she said kidney infections can quickly turn to sepsis. You need to get an antibiotic today because UTIs can quickly spread to the kidneys. Don’t wait any longer.

Please be careful with Timethoprim it was my go-to antibiotic for many years until it caused anaphylactic shock and had to go to hospital.

I can’t take Trimethoprim either. It’s a sulfonamide antibiotic and anaphylactic reactions are quite common. It’s not suitable for anyone with a latex allergy or those who have a bad reaction to eating avocados.

Oh gosh, how awful Yammy. Thanks for the warning. My problem is that I can’t take the other first line defence drug Nitrofurantoin, as it makes my asthma a very bad and makes me cough and wheeze terribly.

that's interesting.
just before the pandemic, an out of hours doc visiting a bed-bound neighbour, advised her to avoid that drug, as it could affect her chest.
he had not seen her before, so must have been making a general point.
and he added, don't say i said so.
so we don't; just that she has been advised not to have it.

I have frequent UTI’s as a result of disability and I can’t take Nitrofurantoin either - to the point where there’s a note on my records not to prescribe it as a first line antibiotic for a UTI. It makes me really ill. A good alternative is Ciprofloxacin if you can take it.

hulahoop Fri 25-Feb-22 09:43:17

Have telephone appointment today thanks for all advice I didn't go to walk in surf rang to say Dr would ring me today .

Shelflife Fri 25-Feb-22 08:28:50

Hulahoop, if you haven’t already done so, head for a walk in centre TODAY! Don’t prevaricate with natural ‘ treatments ‘, it will take more than cranberry juice to sort a urine infection out. If you have repeated UTI s consider talking to your GP about Vagifem - vaginal tablet , easily inserted - makes a MASSIVE difference! Head off now to that walk in centre , do not wait and good luck.

Have you got the Ask First NHS app- really useful for getting appointments when you can’t get through to your GP.

Daisymae Thu 24-Feb-22 16:15:05

You can buy antibiotics online now, useful for a one off. Obviously see your GP if recurrent.
