Good morning everyone. On Monday I had an infusion of the above. A dexa scan showed I have oestopeni and borderline osteoporosis. This was thought to be the best treatment and it was over with in about 40 minutes. The side effects are something else, I was told possibly flu like symptoms and they were right. It doesn’t seem to be getting better and today my legs feel like jelly and my appetites gone. Wondered if anyone else has had this and how long this flu thing lasts. I was supposed to be going out for lunch tomorrow but have had to cancel. Oh and apparently if I need a tooth out it will have to be at the hospital and not the dentist. Hope it’s been worth it because I have to repeat it again in twelve months

I have full blown osteoporosis for 21 years and have refused the drugs and taken the natural route as mentioned in Dr Marilyn Glenville's book Osteoporosis: The Silent Epidemic.

My bones have improved according to my last DEXA scan.

I wouldn't take those drugs for love or money.

Are you too old to start on oestrogen?
Lack of oestrogen is the cause of osteoporosis in the majority of women and a simple solution. Not only that it makes you feel wonderful, prevents vaginal atrophy, sleep problems, osteoarthritis, prolapse, incontinence, premature aging etc., etc.
I’ve been on it for over 30 years and my bone density is superb.

I had zolendronic acid for 3 years running. No side effects and a good improvement in my bone density. I am sad they won't give me any more.

Oestrogen is not always suitable. I have Osteopenia due to lack of oestrogen but oestrogen was responsible for my breast cancer so I take tablets to remove it from my body.
I take biphosphonates which are the same as Zolendronic acid but I take them daily with no side effects. I had one infusion and as you say the side effects were horrendous.

I have the infusion annually and have no side effects what so ever when I have it

I have to agree. I had a DEXA scan after I had breast cancer and was in the Osteopenia category so my GP prescribed Alendronic Acid tablets, one to be taken once a week. As I always do I researched the drug and didn’t like what I read so I didn’t take it. I also later found that the Anastrazole which I had been prescribed after my lumpectomy is an oestrogen blocker and can adversely affect the bones and there is only a minimal difference between taking it and not taking it so I came off it as there were other side effects as well. I have since had another DEXA scan and didn't get the report as last time but have been given a telephone appointment for next week. If I do have osteoporosis I suppose I will have to take the tablets. I will look at the book you mention Sparklefizz

I had a look at a summary of Marilyn Glenville's recommendations and some of the information is factually wrong. I would therefore consider her ideas as flawed.

Thank you all for your replies and apologies for the late reply. I am 72 years old and have tried hrt when I was younger. One caused an unexplained bleed and vagifem, which would have been a god send as I have atrophy resulted in two trips to the breast clinic for continual pain in one breast. I feel better today, first time out since Monday but still tired, can’t sleep and appetite not back to normal. Went to the supermarket but was glad to get back in the car. It’s just flu like symptons like they said but I wish it would go. I did a lft as well this morning just in case and that is clear. Looks like another afternoon with feet up and a book. Thanks again

It’s best to be cautious, everybody is different and HRT isn’t for everybody. I’m sure your symptoms will pass soon if you take it easy, at least it will be 12 months before you have to have another infusion.

I used to take an Alendronic Acid tablet, once a week. Now due to bone cancer, I have a monthly infusion of Zometa/((Zolendronic Acid), to which I have had no reaction, apart from strengthening my bones. This is alongside a Chemo tablet daily for 21 days, with a break of 7 days between treatments.

Just an update for the benefit for anyone thinking of having this. I still have very low energy and have had a stiff neck for the last two days and cramp. Maybe I’m just unlucky or just susceptible to side effects but I wanted to let you know that this can happen. It has put me off having it again in a year and I wished I had researched it more before having it. I suppose I’m one of those people who if the consultant says it would be beneficial to have it then I do. Hope you all have a good weekend

Elliebeth I hope you soon fully recover. Please be wary of consultants - they make mistakes just like anybody else. Twice I have nearly been killed by a consultant's so-called advice, and survived because I ignored them.
