On Maundy Thursdays I occasionally offer foot washing (weird I know, but it’s actually a bit special) so I always revise good foot care beforehand. Once I had a chap who was initially reluctant because he was both embarrassed and afraid, due to suffering with ingrowing toenails. I reminded him that soaking the feet is recommended for that and in the end he enjoyed it so much that he would have rejoined the end of the queue if he could have got away with it! ? Regular soaking is good for the condition, but Boots also do a kit that you might want to have a look at Kate54.

My very elderly chiropodist (retired without telling me!) used to recommend using lanolin on/around the skin of the nail, and to protect it with a little 'sock' of pure lamb's wool. I do feel for you, I've had one for years, the pain for such a small part of you is massive.

Had four done. So get it operated on. Cleared up quite quickly. Use flannels as mini towels to stop infection. Great result.

My youngest had his ingrowing toe nail treated privately and it only cost £180 (in London) about 2 years ago after suffering since he was 14. He said it was worth every penny. I'd get it done asap.

Excellent advice, all taken on board - literally, as it’s a canal trip. Luckily it’s only for a few days so fingers crossed.

I had one that got infected once, very painful, especially if something fell on it.

I’ve had them, but not too badly. I’ve tucked a tiny piece of cotton wool, soaked in baby oil, under the corner, which did help. I dare say olive oil would be just as good..

Good advice dusty angel.
Its agony and I am another who had the big toe operated on privately. My gp referred to Hospital but they woukd only help if i was diabetic. It cost £500 about 10 years ago and took 18 months to properly heal. Not for the faint hearted.
Have a lovely holiday.

Can you ease a wisp of damp cotton wool under the bit that is cutting into you most and then pad as suggested.

Hiking or walking pole

As fast as mine gets better the dog always manages to tread on it with big claws and upset it again. So beware dogs! Next try soaking in Epsom salts. Do not try to cut the nail. Then wear wide loose fitting shoes. If you wear socks all cotton is best. If you are walking do you have or can you borrow a hi,img pole as this can take a lot of weight off that leg and foot?

I had the same problem on holiday one year. I bathed the infected toe with salt water, cushioned it with a dry dressing and wore a loose pair of lightweight shoes that didn't rub.
My daughter had successful surgery on both her big toes years ago.

I had 3 ingrowing toe nails permanently 'killed' many years ago. Easily done, privately. Just find a chiropodist that will do it and book in. Not that expensive, either.

Callistemon21 Fri 22-Apr-22 17:58:15

I'd keep it covered.
I bought some padded plasters once, I think they were for blisters but they might add some protection.

Thanks ….. I think it’ll be warm enough for sandals. Or it might have to be Crocs! Just a bit worried about infection but will take Savlon etc

I feel for you. I suffered with ingrown big toe nails for years and they were eventually cured by a small operation involving removal of part of the nail bed so do see if your GP will refer you for that. It’s a very quick operation and you’re in and out very quickly but need someone to drive you home.
In the meantime I’m afraid the only thing I can suggest is trying to pad it to protect it from pressure.
You have my sympathy and best wishes.?

Will it be warm enough to wear adjustable walking sandals? Pad the toe well first? You could wear them with socks although I know it looks a bit odd.

I see a podiatrist regularly as I’m prone to problems with in-growing toe nails (always the big toe but not necessarily the same one or the same side!)
It’s flared up again but my appointment can’t be brought forward and I’m going away this weekend on a trip which will involve some walking,
Any ideas for temporary relief? It’s not a pretty sight at the moment …
