Hi this is following on from the PPI discussion yesterday. I’ve just had a medication review and I mentioned that I’m getting quite a bit more acid in my stomach. I always feel like I have a hot feeling in my tummy at the moment. I already take a 15mg dose of lansoprazole daily and asked if I should go up to a 30mg dose. She said she’d rather not as it can really affect bones but that ship has already sailed to be honest. That’s from another previous health issue though.
She mentioned Famotidine it’s not a PPI and I wondered if anyone takes it and how they get on with it. She sent info through which I’ve just read and it could suit me.

I take famotidine 20mg twice a day and have no problem with it. I fid it very effective as I am allergic to PPI's and have acid reflux from a hiatus hernia.

Hope that helps...

Yes, I take it as I can’t take PPI’s, 20mg once a day and on my GP’s recommendation a dose of Gaviscon advance before bed.
Similar to Kikibee hiatus hernia.

That’s good to hear Kikibee, I have a hernia too and also Oesophegitis.
That really helps Thankyou.

She said read the information and if you’d like to try it get in touch.
I’m trying to cut down on all the things that can aggravate it as well, though they are things I love.

I read on here that several people eat kefir yoghurt if they have acid reflux.
I love yoghurt so thought I would try it.
It's a bit of an acquired taste as it can be a bit sour, depending on the flavour but I can honestly say that if I have several spoonsful (I tend to buy the bigger pots) after my evening meal instead of a dessert, I don't get the acid reflux at the back of my throat at night -even if I don't have it every day.
I also found that cutting out white bread (that I love) has helped a lot.

ShazzaKanazza Wed 11-May-22 12:28:58

Yes I’ll mention that too. Thanks JaxJacky

Pre and probiotic tablets every morning cured my OH of his awful acid reflux.I buy a make called symbiotics from Amazon. He's been taking them for around 3 months now and hasn't had acid reflu once

I think I’ll get some of that today jaylucy and take it after tea tonight to see if it cools my stomach. I need to cut down on my portions too as that can make it worse. This is all really helpful.

You could always try live yoghurt. I have it most mornings on muesli and haven’t had a cold or flu or acid reflux in the last 18 years.

ShazzaKanazza Wed 11-May-22 15:02:39

I’m going to try all these. Thankyou. I’ve just had a kefir drink. I’ve just bought Greek yoghurt for our overnight oats but will change to live instead. Thankyou all. I do eat a healthy diet so much that DH says he’s going to compost me when I go. But it’s the other stuff like spicy curries, chillies, pickles and red wine that won’t be helping.

I wanted to try kefir or similar but i am also lactose intolerant- any alternatives anyone??

Nannan2 Wed 11-May-22 15:19:39

Also i noticed some of the medication I'm on has a lactose coating- the chemist said "there's no choice"- so it feels like I'm flogging a dead horse, so to speak.?

I have a hiatus hernia too. Lansoprazole prescribed 30 mg daily, twice daily if I am coughing. I’ve had no dietary advice and no discussion about long term effects. I’d really appreciate any tips about diet. I avoid fatty foods, cake biscuits, crisps, chocolate and acidic fruits, citrus, tomatoes by trial and error but even a glass of water can have me reaching for the Gaviscon.

Feelingmyage55 Wed 11-May-22 15:36:41

I have googled the nhs website but open to all advice.

I was prescribed Gaviscon Advance but wasn't told at the time that it can interfere with medications if taken close together. I eventually learned from the pharmacist that I should wait 2 to 3 hours before taking any drugs.

ShazzaKanazza Wed 11-May-22 18:58:45

Feelingmyage55, it sounds like you have awful problems. But it sounds like you are doing all you can cutting out a lot of food already and eating healthy.
We cook naturally gluten free food because I have coeliac disease as well. Sorry to hear you struggle to even drink water without gaviscon.

I came off the “ozoles” was put on famotidine which did not work for me at all. I now take a liquid peppermint solution occasionally and take Rennies to work I also take half a bottle of Kefir every morning plus a probiotic capsule at night. Touchwood my heartburn is not anywhere near as bad as it was but I realise some of you have much more severe symptoms than I do.. this is usually £1.30 in Tesco but at the moment is on offer at 75p so I check the date and stock up on them when they are on offer..
