How to get a prescription for prednisone?

It sounds really difficult for you and I hear your frustration. Being constantly in pain is really hard. Sorry you are having the support you ned for this.

Someone who worked for the NHS told me that in many cases, the one who who shouts the loudest gets seen. Personally I would become a 'nuisance' and keep insisting on seeing a doctor in person and a specialist. We've all been trained to be polite and not make a fuss, especially as women... make a fuss! To see a private doctor you will probably still need a referral letter from your GP. You should look for a Rheumatologist preferably someone with an interest in autoimmmune conditions such as PMR.

My friend has Rheumatoid Arthritis, and very often gets prednisolone from a pharmacy in India. Over there it’s sold over the counter. She either buys it herself when she goes there or asks family/friends to pick them up. She only uses it when there’s a flare-up of her arthritis.
I’m not suggesting you do the same. She has suffered from this condition for 40 years .
Please do not buy it online. Get it through a Pharmacy whether hear or abroad

I’ve been and still am on prednisolone been on it for 15 years continuously taping down very very slowly, I have a rare autoimmune condition! There is no way I would ever self medicate so wouldn’t buy any online! If I was in very bad pain I would be ringing my Gp until I was seen or failing that I’d be off to A&E no one should be enduring 3 months of pain

I should add that prednisolone is not a short-term remedy. It worked, as I said, miraculously, after 48 hours, but it took me almost six years to get my inflamatory markers under control.

i wouldn't dream of sef-prescribing a steroid drug. A few days of, say, 15-20mg per day would show whether or not it was an auto-immune disease. Like pieinthe sky I had PMR and was astounded how much better I felt after just two or three days. There are other auto-immune conditions such as Lichen Sclerosus which also might respond, but pred is not a panacea.

BTW, I was informed by my late sister who was a GP, that prednisolone and prednisone are one and the same. The longer spelling is what we use; prednisone is what it is called in US and New Zealand where my sister had her practice.

I havent seen a neurologist, only a GP.
I havent been referred to see any specialists, this is half the problem.

For those of you who suggested going private. Do private doctors see patients the same or next day? I would want to see one asap.and preferably local.

I would absolutely advise against trying to self-medicate with prescription drugs.
There is a reason doctors spend years and years qualifying.
To attempt to DIY is both dangerous and folly.

Because steroids suppress the immune system they make you vulnerable to a lot of other infections, respiratory infections in particular. Auto immune conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis can be improved but use needs to be carefully monitored so don’t self medicate.

Although similar, Prednisone and Prednisolone are DIFFERENT generic drugs. The can have different side effects and interactions with other medications.

If you have to, see a private doctor rather than buy off the internet.

So sorry youre experiencing such a lot of pain, like other posters before me I would never condone buying drugs online especially something you’ve no idea if it’s right for you or not
I know a lot of surgeries aren’t as good as mine but you really aren’t getting proper treatment at all
Can you change to another surgery?
Mine have a rule that they reply to any emails within two days the only two times I ve used them in the last 2 years they have answered the first time within an hour the second time within 15 minutes and I had an appointment 3 hours later

My friend was suspected of having Parkinson’s and was given a couple of weeks worth of a drug that would only work if it was Parkinson’s it worked and she’s now very well on the drug thats what you want and need it would certainly seem the answer for you I wonder why they don’t

PS, my ‘short course’ of Prednisalone is 8 tablets to be taken in one go, each day for 4 days, so for 3 days I’m usually full of energy ( even though I’m unwell and have a job to breathe) but can’t do anything and then I get the Steroid Low which plummets me down so all I can do is lay down for 2 days.
Steroids shouldn't be taken on a ‘let’s see what happens’ basis.

But I would do what someone suggested, bombard your GP /consultant with phone calls until you get a proper meeting to discuss your pain.

I have an ‘emergency’ pack of Prednisalone for when I have an Asthma attack, it’s a short course but not always effective.

Please don’t take them unless you are prescribed them, next time you see a Health Professional ask them if they think that a short course of Steroids will help, then go by what they tell you.

I think it wrong to recommend anyone to order drugs on line, Prednisone should only be taken with care and on recommendation of a doctor. If you are in extreme pain and it’s unbearable present yourself to A and E, that’s what they are there for, otherwise visit reception at your surgery telling them how you feel and something needs to be done.

I have an autoimmune condition which is PMR (Polymyalgia Rheumatica) and I should imagine that this is what your doctors may suspect. With this you get pain and stiffness particularly in shoulders and hips, often it’s difficult to raise your arms and even getting out of bed can be painful. There is no test that can prove it although you can often show elevated inflammatory levels in your blood. It is generally acknowledged that if you are given a short course of Prednisolone usually about 15-20mg per day and your symptoms improve then it is PMR. Painkillers do not work with PMR. Please do not be tempted to try and buy Prednisolone for yourself as it is a strong drug and should only be prescribed by a doctor. I do not understand why it is taking so long to diagnose you as after one blood test and listening to my symptoms my GP started me on Prednisolone straight away. Ask them if this is what they suspect and tell them how much pain you are in. Good luck,

Yes pain is so debilitating,but please don't go down the self medicating route via online.
The drug you wish to have may not what you get.
Prednisilone is a powerful drug I know, but can have strong side effects.
Hope you feel better soon, or at least get some understanding and pain relief.
