Microdiscectomy over

Had my op last Tuesday and it went OK. But when I got home I was in acute pain and could not get into bed even - not from the lop site, but down my leg in a different place from the original problem.

Taken into A&E (where it was 21 hours before I saw a doctor) and admitted for a couple of nights where tests etc. were done. Cause of problem still unclear.

On my own at home and struggling. I am pain free now walking and it is clear that removing the disc has dealt with the original problem, but the pain on getting into bed (which I can barely do) and on trying to move around in bed is dreadful, with pain going down my leg in a different distribution from before.

I cannot lie because I am in such pain when I do, am not allowed to sit for more than 20 minutes, so am mostly wandering around like a lost soul.

I cannot take the morphine I was given as it causes biliary spasm, which is dreadfully painful - had to deal with this all last night here on my own - it was not great.

Feeling pretty fed up at the moment.

Could one of your daughter's come and stay with you temporarily?

That sounds miserable Lucky. Can you use a stool to help get into bed. I have one the gc used to reach the sink and it helps. I also have a bed handle fitted under the mattress by OT which i use to get into bed. You could contact community OT to see if they can help.
I hope you start to feel better very soon, its hard but take each day at a time. Best wishes.

Oh Luckygirl (not lucky at the moment) I hope others can help and support you, here and In Real Life. Sometimes we just aren’t prepared for post-op pain but this is more than difficult. I’d at least be on to 111 but maybe that’s not much of a help with this.

I hope you can soon find some distraction and real help… I’ll be thinking of you. Do let us know how you’re getting on.

Oh Luckygirl - how awful for you . I know the original problem has been sorted and I’m glad about that. But I can’t imagine not being able to lie down and not being able to sit down for more than 20 minutes.
One night, about 3 years , I was in a similar position. Flank pain , which only eased when I walked, so that was what I did …walked up and down the upstairs landing. I’m on my own as well and didn’t want to ring anyone. I waited till the morning, rang my son; he took into hospital…they suspected kidney stones, but scan showed it wasn’t. The pain finally disappeared…..till today, I don’t know what caused that agonising pain. The only answer is that the stones were probably very very grainy and I might pasted it, unknowingly.
I hope you will soon be able to get back to some form of normality and above all, get some sleep flowers

I meant to say that a sleeping tablet might give you some rest.

.I was prescribed zopiclone and have taken them most nights i my hip op 6 weeks ago.

Oh Lucky I feel for you as my DH had this op cancelled because of the pandemic, but could very well still need to have it done. Being on your own as well, how on earth are you supposed to cope? Perhaps a chat with your GP? x

Oh Lucky I am so sorry and I hope you get some relief soon. I know all too well what back pain is like when I slipped a disc for the second time in October I couldn't put a foot to the floor, lie or sit. DH packed my back in ice and made sure the painkillers kept coming (co-codamol in my case I wont take opiates until I absolutely have to they make me barmy).
Good wishes for me and hoping things improve for you.

(I'm frightened now that this op is offered to me after my forthcoming MRI).

Hope you have been able to get some relief and help today, lucky flowers

Luckygirl3 Thu 02-Jun-22 09:21:19

Thank you for good wishes.

I am glad to report that things are improving.

BigBertha1 - please do not be frightened about the op - it has cured that pain. I am just unlucky to have had another problem on top of this. If it weren't for that I would be absolutely fine now. So do not be worried about going for it if you need it.

I am walking without crutches, which I was using before, but have hip pain and, I suspect some other disc problem that are getting in the way of my recovery - it is just bad luck.
