I was instructed to wear a mask when having a blood test, which I did.
What has annoyed me is an eagerly anticipated group meeting, first one for two years, has been derailed because someone visited their grandchild in a different part of the country and caught covid. She took it upon herself to email everyone, the night before, to say we should all think seriously about attending, wear masks and sit outside, plus testing ourselves. All the risks were considered before the meeting was convened, we are aware of the rising numbers, and she was not planning to attend anyway. Now only half the people are going to attend, which will ruin the meeting.

biscuitmuncher, I don’t think Baggs can give any evidence that masks don’t provide any protection, as I doubt if such evidence exists.

Biscuitmuncher, your comment about catching a cold is truly risible. People don’t die as the direct result of colds. I’ve been having them for years snd 81 years later I’m still here. I’d like to hang about a bit longer too.

Baggs, I don’t hear too much these days from the media reporting on covid statistics, but I personally know lots of people who have/have had covid snd who’ve been very ill.
We DO need to go on being careful, because getting it is nothing like catching a cold (that wasn’t your claim, I know).

Biscuitmuncher I will repeat again what I keep saying and you seem incapable of understanding. No vaccine stops the total transmission of a disease nor removes every chance of someone catching it.

What it does is give immunity to the majority, and drastically reduces the severity of the disease in those who get it.

The comparison I always make is with the childhood immunisations for whooping cough and measles. Back in the early 1950s both my sisters caught one then the other. The youngest nearly died of it , the elder was seriously ill for over three months and missed nearly 2 terms of school.

In the 1970s, my children had their immunisations. Both had whooping cough, one had measles. In both cases the illness lasted less than a week and both were very mildly ill.

This is how vaccinations work, not your silly interpretation of it, which I am sure you are capable of researching properly but cannot be bothered, finding that believing ignorant gurus to be so much more exciting than the facts.

No-one I know is acting as if it's all over. They are acting as if it's something they can deal with, which, even the poeple I know have (and know of having) had it (once or more than once) feel they can do. This includes one or two people who are anti-vax in general, not just for covid vaccines.

In short, they are pissed off with what they see as media fear-mongering. That isn't a denial of the seriousness of the disease for some people, but an acceptance of the fact that life includes risk of illness and even death. I still haven't seen any stats claiming that the virus is much of a threat to young people or people in the prime of life as the Spanish Flu after WW1 was.

Did you read what another poster wrote about her son, previously a confident young man who had travelled the world, now suffering from long covid and being unable to function properly any more.

I like Stephen Reicher and think he makes a lot of sense growstuff. So IMO do many of the scientists, on the Independent Sage Group, and I would rather listen to them. That’s my bias, which I’m readily admitting to.

Reicher said “closing our eyes and pretending it's not there, that's the most dangerous strategy of all,” but that is exactly what people are doing.

He's right ... and that's precisely what people who want to "get back to normal" and go to great lengths to cherry pick statistics are doing.

Well, I had a doctor's appointment two weeks ago and the doctor told me I didn't need to wear a mask unless I had symptoms of covid.

Very few people seem to be wearing them now.

I have no idea whether people have been wearing masks at my GP's surgery, but I received a text this morning saying they have more or less had to close (except for emergencies) because so many staff at the practice have Covid. Nearly all appointments have been moved online or to telephone appointments. Routine tests with the nurse have been cancelled.
