I don't think it's "normal", but it's hardly a great imposition. It's "normal" to protect oneself when infection is rife, just as it would be "normal" to wear a dust mask when sanding - maybe you panic about that too.
It’s been normal in eastern countries for years, even before covid. And not just because of pollution. People have long worn a mask eg on public transport if they have a cold so they don’t infect the people around them. I had hoped that this general awareness of being responsible not just for our own health but the health of those around us would become the norm here, too, but, alas it hasn't. I suppose it was sill of me to hope that it would although I think young people were much happier to accept mask wearing than older people.
