They’re for expressing surprise grin

grin or in my case disapproval!
I’ve got very few wrinkles, but I do have what’s known as ‘11 lines’ between my eyebrows from all the frowning I’ve done.

What about under your arms and around the genitals?
My farmer husband says they do do the job - normally, but can't cope with extremes. But as most people don't have a manual job I think his interpretation of 'normal' might not be a little different from 'normal' to most of us.
He also says they keep the snow off your eyes (!)
He does have bushy eyebrows.

hair in underarms and groin area would be similar in terms of catching sweat, and also possibly to cushion any friction in the areas. who knows.

I thought they were there for decoration/or drawing exercises. Pencil in and draw a shape you like then colour in black.
Really I was told at school they were to protect vulnerable parts of your body, I suppose the browbone of a skeleton does protrude and to stop sweat getting in your eyes.

They are t stop you face from fraying. My Dad told me that. smile. He also said mens' nipples were to stop their chest from fraying.

Well, if your Dad told you who I am I to question it? Lol

Nah - my Dad said that was what lips were for, to stop your mouth from fraying!

Were they all northerners by any chance?

No, my eyebrows do not work at all in this heat, and salty sweat in the eyes is painful!

Look at the great apes and how the use their eyebrows to show expression, emotion etc. maybe because we’ve developed language we have lost most of their ability to do so?

Mine don’t exist now however I thought eyebrows are there to be raised when you disapprove of something.?

Hi JackyB . I too thought that their sole purpose was to keep sweat out of our eyes. But I think that thousands of years ago our eyebrows must have been extremely thicker than those we have evolved into now, so whilst they might have stopped the sweat at one time, ours are now much too sparse even if we are " unplucked" .

I've always thought eyebrows are there to prevent sweat from running into our eyes. Sounds like it doesn't always work then.

I have never sweated but with the recent heat, and probably as I am now we'll past the menopause, even light housework is bringing me out in a sweat - I am constantly towelling myself off. As I am new to this sweating lark, I was surprised to discover that my eyebrows do not prevent the salty liquid getting into my eyes. I always assumed that this was their purpose.

I have never plucked my eyebrows, and I would consider the ones I have fairly average. So now I sit here with eyes stinging, wondering what their purpose is. I'll have to sew myself some sweatbands.
