I had exactly the same problem - it didn't go away on its own so I booked into a good physiotherapist. She diagnosed a torn meniscus and some arthritis. She organised an x-ray for me, to use as a reference base for future problems. X-ray showed mild arthritis. She gave me 3 basic exercises to do, 3 times a day, every day. I thought they were quite minimal but it seems minimal and frequent do the trick! It has taken a few months but now I am pretty much back to normal. If I have any pain I have learned to have a few days resting here and there, around normal activity. I still do my physio exercises twice a week. I love to walk and now I can enjoy this again.

I also had a torn meniscus in the past and when my knee started to give way I had a meniscectomy which solved all of my problems. I also found it was not particularly painful post-operatively which was a bonus.

Dr Google said this is what I did to my knee! I agree, it was very painful but did get better. I’m afraid I can’t remember how long it took.

Thank you for replying. I will definitely look up the book.

I had something called a bakers cyst at the back of my knee some years ago. It was extremely painful and my GP sent me to a physiotherapist. I was given exercises to do, which I did religiously, and which were very helpful. I also bought a little book called ‘Treat Your Own Knees’ by Jim Johnson. I find it invaluable! It’s got a range of exercises and tips for keeping knees healthy. I’m sure it’ll be quite cheap on Amazon. I would certainly keep up with the exercises you’ve been given by your physiotherapist! Even though my knee condition was different from yours, exercise certainly helped me.

Hello, I've got a really painful knee . I saw a physiotherapist who said it was a torn miniscus. She's given me some exercises to do for the next six weeks to see how I get on. I was wondering if anyone else had this and how they managed the pain and whether it got better with exercise or did it end up with surgery. I'd be grateful for any advice.
