Have a chat with your pharmacist.

I get this as a side effect of some meds. Asking your pharmacist is a good idea.

I was watching a programme sometime ago with Dr Xander, van tulleken, analysing off the shelf products for colds/coughs etc. Mixing real lemon juice with honey and warm water does have a beneficial effect. Here's the link

Try Covonia mucus relief from the chemist .MY GP said it was allergies but the anti histamines he prescribed didn't work so I bought the covonia and its been a lot better since I started taking it

I used to use decongestants until I read they can make mucus stickier and thicker. I stopped taking them and my mucus problem improved.

Maybe try sinus rinsing? You can use a netipot or anything else that you can sterilise which you can spray up your new se.

I have a similar problem which I reckon is triggered when the central heating goes back on and the atmosphere is too dry. I hang water containers on the radiators which helps a bit.
I dread the winter months as I'm prone to convulsive tickly coughs which come on if I move into a different atmosphere e.g. from outdoors to theatre/cinema/restauant.

I had this following Covid a few weeks ago. It's horrid isn't it? I hadn't needed a tissue for at least 30 years, then that. The worst part was, I can't spit, and had to swallow it. DH is still disgustingly slimy - more so than usual.

Sorry, no remedies, but loads of sympathy.

Contact is working for me

Possible allergic reaction?

HeavenLeigh Sat 01-Oct-22 09:35:53

Well had dreadful night last night choking through the night having to stand up clutching my ribs as so sore from coughing, was sipping honey and hot water and yes it felt lovely on my throat when drinking slowly, but was up at 3,45am coughing my heart out, yes getting through loads of tissues, back to bed now. Plenty of ventilation in bedroom, few pieces of kiwi fruit black grapes pears meant to be good for helping the mucus

potentially and likely to be autumn allergies and probably from spores from mould, leaf mould, fungi. These spores reproduce quickly when RH (relative humidity) is 60%. A de-humidifier could well help you but obviously first check the RH first

Netipot is very helpful but use with saline made from boiled then cooled water and do not blow hard after using, just very gentle little blows

For a short while, try cutting out wheat and milk products

NAC tablets will thin and eventually clear the mucus.
It can be bought from a good health food store.
Here’s a link.

It does sound like an allergy, try cutting out dairy and see if that helps and yes plenty of fruit and liquid.

HeavenLeigh Sat 01-Oct-22 10:07:01

Read through again sorry ladies will look at the net I pot advice never heard of that! And the NAC tabs advice too thanks sago, I will add though that I have gerd and have had this for three years, I don’t know whether that makes a difference with the horrendous amount of mucus I think it does, I’ve just been reading this morning that dairy is not as good as I once thought, I have fage protein yogurt every day, and I’m thinking I really don’t think I’m doing myself many favours here, so I’m going to stop it, yes karmalady I did wonder about allergies and was looking at humidifiers , you are all so lovely giving advice thank you so much

Have you tried an antihistamine? I have often found the cause is something in the air at this time of the year.

Caleo Sat 01-Oct-22 10:12:51

Do you know to lavage your pharynx with normal saline?

HeavenLeigh Sat 01-Oct-22 10:13:21

No I haven’t tried a antihistamine lovetopaint, one of the big issues at the moment is I have an autoimmune disorder and I’ve been on steriods oral prednisolone for 17 years, and I’m tapering down I’m down to 2 mg and this has hit me since change of weather, I’m wondering if my adrenal glands are not kicking in on such a low dose of pred, and this is why it’s happened combination of things

Caleo Sat 01-Oct-22 10:14:26

When you say "mucus" I presumed it's thick or gluey stuff, not watery .

overthehill Sat 01-Oct-22 15:17:43

Big sympathies here. I have been coughing my guts up most of my life and never really found out the reason. I do now avoid lactose which makes a bit of a difference, but I love mature cheese and can't find a suitable substitute so limit it and cut thinly when I have it. I also cut out caffeine, another love chocolate which contains it. Just discovered a vegan ice cream which tastes like ice cream 'Swedish Glace'. I believe I have an underlying condition that crops up on a regular basis causing massive amounts of mucus and making me cough. When I go away, as we do a lot in our caravan in the summer, a change of air will bring it on.
What I do use as a standby if it gets too much is Grapefruit Seed Extract. Never take it neat and it is not the best taste, but this stuff kills more or less everything. I put 15 drops in a glass of water and drink probably three times in a day. It can reduce coughing. Another thing rub Vick in your chest of a night. Good luck.
