Vaccines and Reactions: Thoughts please ?

Hello
I’m sorry if this thread is a bit repetitive; I know that there have been several vaccine threads in the past.

I’m asking for advice as I know that lots on here and their other halves have experienced reactions to the various vaccines.

My DH always has bad reactions, this is after being hospitalised with Covid and pneumonia, and he is also immune suppressed.

He is due to have his Flu vaccine, a second Shingles one (the non-live version), and today he’s been contacted to book another Covid one.

I know that they are going to make him really quite ill and he’s not in good health anyway, and he gets really low when he’s not well.

Is there anything you can do to lessen the effects?
What is the best thing to do timing wise?

I’m going to call the GP to discuss it, but I just wondered what you thought

Thank you smile

I haven't had my fourth yet and now have to wait as, ironically, I caught Covid just as I got an appointment to go for the vaccination.

MissAdventure Sat 29-Oct-22 17:06:29

I've just had my fourth today.
I think I may be behind in how many I should have had, but presuming it doesn't matter?

Nana8 older people are actually on their fifth vaccine perhaps Ashcombe is younger
I had my fourth in the springtime and now awaiting my fifth it was booked for Sunday but had to cancel as had another problem occur

My Covid vaccine was my 5th ,first 4 were all phizer.no reactions at all.this last one was Moderna.which I was dreading having heard about bad side effects,so I was pleased that it wasn't as bad as expected, but worse than others

I probably didn’t phrase myself at all well. I was kind of musing over the phenomena of reaction. Let me try to exp,sin better where my thoughts were drifting off to.

When my husband had leukaemia and had no immune system of his own at all he had intravenous immunity , white blood cells taken from other people to enable him to then receive some vaccinations against infections within his own body.

After the vaccinations his blood and major organs were all monitored very carefully three times a day. The dead vaccines produced no detectable changes in blood or organs. Which is what, medically, would be expected.

I wasn’t denying people’s reactions, more trying to reassure that nothing serious was happening in terms of what the reactions were doing to the body.

Which I obviously did very badly? Sorry.

Lathyrus

There’s really no medical/physiological reason why a non-live vaccine would make anybody ill. It’s not active to cause any sort of reaction within the body.

Best do what the doctor says?

I have had a non serious but knocked on my bum reaction with every covid jab and most of my flu jabs. I guess your answer depends on your definition of illness. Active or not it certainly does cause a reaction in my body! I still go and get them because I have had flu twice and the reactions I do get are a walk in the park compared to flu, also I do not want covid.... but please don't say that reactions can't happen because they do!

Best wishes paddyann, hope you feel better soon.

I said on the other thread I was really ill after having the Covid booster and flu on the same day in different arms. I had a lump like half a boiled egg on the covid site and a swollen lymph node. I am only starting to feel reasonably normal a fortnight later. I cannot remember the four days after the jab at all. Yet had never had a reaction to either jabs previously.
I hope you feel better soon paddyann.

Callistemon21 Mon 24-Oct-22 12:18:53

I hope it's not Covid and you feel better soon, paddyann

I had my flu jab on Friday afternoon, perfectly healthy at that point. I've had a rotten couple of days, achey shivers, snuffly, lethargic. Apparently these side effects wear off in a couple of days?. Got my covid booster on Tuesday.

“Astra Zeneca doesn’t seem to be around any more”.

Astra Zeneca is the primary vaccine being given in developing countries around the world. It’s preferred because of its longevity and because it doesn’t need specialised conditions like refrigerators to keep it viable.

Countries like Britain that were able to vaccinate early in the pandemic mainly gave Astra Zeneca and so now othervaccines are given to create a mix and match, which is thought to be more effective than giving just one type of vaccine.

Interestingly the reports of blood clots that were reported at first don’t seem to be evident in the millions of Astra Zeneca vaccines that have now been given around the world. I expect someone’s looking into that.

Hoping it isn’t Covid Paddyann54 wishing you a speedy recovery

I had no reaction to any of the Pfizer jags I had ,but the last jag was Moderna and I had a flu jag in the same arm at the same time.I had horrible side effects ,dizziness, tightness in my chest ,high temperature .My GP surgery said although not common they were normal for that vaccine .
Now 3 weeks down the line I think I have covid...all the same symptoms I had with the jag but worse .Tests are all coming back negative but my GS has the same symptoms and it took 4 daily tests before he got a positive .
I feel really bad .If I dont feel better by Monday I'll call the GP for advice.I cant even lie down as the room spins ,so I tried sleeping sitting up last night and got a couple of hours but a really bad back added to the list for an awkward sleeping position.
We were actually congratulating ourselevs for having avoided covid all this time .

Glad you're OK FannyC. I'm sure that's a huge relief.

Haven't had mine yet. Waiting until MRI scan and dentist appointment are over.

FannyCornforth Sat 22-Oct-22 07:29:56

Hello Jacky
Thank you, yes, it was all absolutely fine, much to my surprise!
My arm is very sore too.
I’m pleased it went well for you too.
The nurse mentioned that she thought the vaccine that is worst for reactions is the AZ one, which is what MrFC had first.
I’ve also booked flu jabs for next Wednesday as I’ve just heard on the radio news that flu season is starting early this year.
Thanks again

Jaxjacky Fri 21-Oct-22 19:29:27

How did your Covid jabs go yesterday FannyCornforth? I had mine yesterday too, sore arm until about lunchtime today, 24 hours, otherwise fine.

SachaMac Fri 21-Oct-22 19:28:54

I had my flu jab last Saturday & have been fine. Just had my invite for my Covid booster and I’m a little worried as I had severe headaches after the third one that went on for days. A friends husband was the same. Headaches are listed as a possible side effect.

I will have it but I’m going to leave a good gap between the flu one and the Covid booster. I have had Covid since my last booster and was quite ill for a few days and tired for a couple of weeks afterwards so shudder to think how I would have been without the vaccine. The nurse did say to drink plenty of water afterwards.

Nanna58 Fri 21-Oct-22 19:04:24

Mr C had his last Covid and flu jabs about two weeks apart. No ill effects from the Covid one but was banjaxed by the flu one for quite a few days, aches fatigue and headaches. I’ve got mine next couple of weeks so will see hat transpires!

nanna8 Fri 21-Oct-22 10:03:52

Thanks for the info ,Ashcombe and grannydarkhair. They very rarely mention Covid now, a bit of a contrast from earlier when it was on the news every single day. The testing sites have mostly closed, too, so we are relying on RAT tests.

Ashcombe Fri 21-Oct-22 07:10:29

nanna8: Most of we older folk are having our fourth Covid vaccinations. I was given Astra Zeneca for the first two (mild, short lived reaction), then Pfizer (rather unwell with flu like symptoms next day) but Moderna for my fourth was a very different experience!

I felt fidgety, disorientated and headachy for 24 hours! Unfortunately, I was trying to pack a case for a weekend away and forgot to pack underwear!! But, as others have said, these side effects are a small price to pay if it prevents us catching, or being seriously ill, with Covid.

Nannee49 Fri 21-Oct-22 06:54:59

FannyCornforth does your husband usually heal well from something like a cut finger or a sprain, for example? I have what I call good healing skin, that is to say if something minor happens I usually heal very well and very quickly.

However, this happy state of affairs is a completely different story when it comes to viruses and the like and it's my pet theory that the thing in my bod - apparently it's cytokine reaction - which helps with minor stuff goes into overdrive and the result is extreme sensitivity and feeling very poorly.

Thought it might just be worth asking the question. It doesn't affect the outcome but seems a fair rationalisation of WHY it happens which helps me to deal with it.

Maybe we're ideal material for a study?

FannyCornforth Fri 21-Oct-22 03:40:35

Hello BlueBelle ? it’s that time in the morning again!
He’s got to have a different one to most people. The usual vaccine is ‘live’ which he can’t have due to immune problems.
I even have to notify the vet that the dog and the cat can’t have a live vaccine (I don’t really understand this!)
In fact, it must be a new vaccine, because he has never been able to have a shingles one until this year.

BlueBelle Fri 21-Oct-22 03:32:02

Just waiting for CoviD number 5 Nana8
Why’s your husband have a second shingles jab fanny I understood there was only one to be had ?

grannydarkhair Fri 21-Oct-22 02:07:29

nanna8 The COVID vac I referred to in my previous post was my fourth. Although it’s from the Pfizer group, it is different to my first three as it’s changed because of the Omicron mutation. All mine have been Pfizer as I have allergy issues for which I take daily meds and medics decided that would be the “safest” combination for me.
Here in the UK, some people have had extra boosters due to their additional clinical vulnerabilities. I don’t know about the extra boosters, as few posts have stated which vac they received. Also, some/many people in the UK (I think) received both Pfizer and Astra Zeneca between their two initial vacs.
