Partial knee replacement

I did ask the surgeon-who has an excellent reputation and is a specialist in knees only -why not TKP and has explained why.To preserve the integrity of the existing part of my knee which is fine.It doesnt necessitate cutting muscle and tissue unnecessarily. That the outcome for those with an active lifestyle is better.I have seen an excellent physio and she suggested just requesting arthroscopy and clean out first. But as he explained its bone on bone but only in the medial compartment.I have decided to trust his advice. That's interesting re the watering cans as I did a lot of that too to the point my right shoulder hurt too.Blooming hosepipe ban !

Both mine were PKR.

I've been told I need a TKR in one knee and PKR in the other, which has further damage due to carrying heavy watering cans during the drought.

I see no point in a PKR because surely it will need re-doing in future.
However, with waiting lists here being so long I doubt I'll ever get them done on the NHS.

Washerwoman you will find that the vast majority have had full knee replacements and even during my professional life I rarely came across anybody who had had a partial knee replacement.

I think you should ask the advice of a physio.

Not everybody's knee surgery is painful- both of my knees were horrendously sore but a male friend was going up and down stairs like a 10 year old the next day. Like me he had them operated on at different times.

I had this 8 years ago. Both knees, 6 months apart. I was 59.
Of course there is pain and discomfort but well worth it.
Had to cope on my own during the day as DH and other family were at work. I found the recovery fairly quick, within 4 weeks I was doing everything as normal without the pain.

I found Bone Smart useful - bonesmart.org/forum/view/knee-surgery-recovery-area.9/

Thanks.Yes I've read some of the thread Sarah and will definitey revisi - it it's very long and mainly hips.I was wondering more about a partial knee.I believe ( hope!) rehab is somewhat shorter. I sound impatient but DH is recovering from a major op and has severe ankle arthritis so dog walking, gardening and at the moment are driving are my jobs.Pain and timescales etc and quick tips are still welcome.Everyone seems to have had full knees and the surgeon said they were different ops for different reasons and a partial was more appropriate for my age and lifestyle. Just wondered if anyone else had one.

There’s a thread about this - www.gransnet.com/forums/health/1311970--Hip-Replacement-2-Knees-Welcome

I’m looking after my Daughter at the moment she is 2 weeks post op, her other knee was done last year. She had severe Arthritis in both knees, bone on bone and is 48 yrs old, so fairly young.
Pain was severe, but she had a Personal pain device (a PCU I think it was ) to control it for the first 24 hours, then other pain meds were issued, the GP issued a prescription once she was home.
She wasn’t looking forward to having the second op, but is pleased with the results so far.

Has any had one of these ?I knew I'd done something serious to my knee lifting a heavy bag of shopping awkwardly in the summer. I thought after weeks of waiting to see my GP after paying for physio and exercises etc it was a torn cartilage. An MRI confirmed it was not just torn but absent in the medial part of my knee. And also I have bone on bone severe arthritis there. The other two compartments are OK.So a partial replacement is what I'm having .Any tips for recovery. And is it really as painful as I've read? I'm a tough old bird generally but this time I'm actually very anxious!Probably not helped by the fact I'm usually so active gardening and dog walking I don't do inactivity easily!
