Hello 👋
Here is the new thread!
Thank you to regular and irregular posters all.
Especially those such as Silverling and Charleygirl who have provided so much advise and support. (There are lots of other lovely posters, but too many to list).
As well as advice, there is also much wisdom and kindness.
I will link to the first and second threads below.
Wherever you are on your replacement journey, you are most welcome to join us here
One last try
My post is not on active at all, nit even at the end, so giving it another go. Fir those not in the know they wouldnt have a clue that we even exist.
How are things downtoearth and anyone else who has just had surgery.
A neighbour had a new hip a couple of weeks ago but doesn't want it mentioned, not at all in any way, so i didn't tell her about this thread. I find that quite strange but each to his/her own.
I will keep my fingers crossed for you SL.
I havent had a pedi yet,my poor tootsies are being neglected, have podiatrist next week though.
Painted nails makes me feel brighter and fun
It hasn’t rained here yet despite forecast of heavy rain from
Midday. Still time of course,
Glad you had your nails done, I had my first pedi in 3 years a few weeks ago.lovely.
Walking again tomorrow hope rain holds off.
Thanks SL best laid plans for another meander around the courtyard has been thwarted,we are having extremely heavy rain and a thunder storm.
How are you today,my nail lady has just been and restored my nail polish that I had to take off for the op.
Hopefully clips out tomorrow,2 weeks already
Glad to hear you are walking. You seem to be doing extremely well downtoearth, well done.
Hi Charley
I had hung washing out last week when we had some sunshine in my small garden area,it smelled amazing when I got in in.
My plan is to use our courtyard to exercise daily, and increase my steps everyday.
I managed just over 1,000 yesterday,I am aiming for 1100-1200 today,I am able to move indoors without crutches, and only use just one.
I am glad that you are pain free, especially as you have AMD,it is a buggeration that my brother suffers from
downtoearth the one good thing is that you are facing summer if it ever comes and it is so pleasant to sit out in a garden or on a balcony, enjoying the sunshine and pain free.
I love hanging clothes outside and although my knee was painful it did give me satisfaction when I had achieved that task. Now of course I do not think about it as my knees, on the whole, are pain free.
Time is a good healer but please do not get impatient. Enjoy the rest-when are you going to have such a good excuse to do zilch?!
Hi JE
Thankyou, this thread has been really in formative, and invaluble, and if any one is reading and facing surgery then there is a lot of collective knowledge and experience to support them.
I would endorse the operation as that life sucking grinding pain day in day out, dissapeared straight away, just post operative discomfort that can be managed with pain relief.
Your recovery can be managed at home alone, with preparation for your home coming,it is nice to have someone welcome you home, but if you havent anyone, you can manage alone.
As JE has said there is always a listening ear available, especially helpful if you feel lonely or isolated.
So a big thankyou to all who are supporting me,and if you are about to undergo surgery, hopefully I can support you along the way.
Oh downtoearth I completely understand how you are feeling.
It IS tough for the first couple of weeks or so and the fact that it’s completely normal and to be expected, in my opinion, should be spoken about more.
I certainly found it tough and frustrating at times, and I had my husband here, so for those on their own like you, those feelings must be magnified.
I have made that point probably several times on these hip/knee threads, but I am also very anxious not to overstate it and thereby possibly put some folks off having the operation.
Lets face it, none of us relish the idea of surgery, but there comes a time when the hip or knee is so dammed painful that replacement surgery is essential, as the pain won’t go away without it, despite what some physiotherapists might claim!
I’m also well aware that there are probably quite a few people reading these comments who never post but who are themselves waiting for surgery and the last thing I want to do is put anyone off having what is a brilliant operation with an extremely high success rate.
In the meantime downtoearth it sounds as if you are progressing well, so don’t be disheartened. As you have seen though there is always someone on here to chat to, others who can reassure you that it will get better.
CornergranI agree with normal activity being better, and its good to hear someone endorsing that.
Thankyou for your kind words,it is hard to chart your progress without some point of reference
You’re progressing very well downtoearth. Chin up.
Agree with charley, it’s normal to have a post surgery down feeling. It was day 7 for me. Talking to the surgeon at my review, he was a chatty soul for a surgeon, I told him I hated him on day 7, really low, frustrated and generally cross and it was all his fault! He roared, said it’s common but most patients don’t blame him. Then followed it with ‘but you’re not most patients’. I’m still working out if he was being rude.
.
Go gently. Don’t overdo things. I also did few of the prescribed exercises, certainly nowhere as much as the hospital physio had demanded I do. I’ve mended very well, interestingly the surgeon wasn’t a fan of the exercise sheet. He said normal activity is in his view the best exercise.
670 steps so far,and using one crutch, and sometimes nothing at all,its always closeby and no chances are taken.
Previous surgeries, major and minor have always been by GA.
I always found anaesthetic took ages to leave me.
This time I had a epidural, and sedation and havent felt down in the same way, more frustrated with inanimate objects, which have improved my vocabulary to docker level when they wont cooperate.
Fanny most definitely. We get all hyped up for surgery, have it done and it is major surgery. Some have more pain than expected, others are just so glad to have the months of pain removed. It is very natural.
No I am not. But I know people who are.
Thanks Fancy are you a hip/ kneester.
Must stop procrastinating and go and have a wash, have washed hair so that is done just the necessities now.
I was just coming on to write, I love the way you are getting the posts on Active better now.
It shouldnt have to be that way in my opinion, but not my site.
Just made a lovely post to you all and it has dissapeared.
I felt awful for a good few weeks I think. You will gradually recover and at least you are free of pain . Living alone and recovering from major surgery can also be very lonely as it’s difficult to get out and meet people and it doesn’t help I think. My family who live near are wonderful but very busy A year after surgery, the only part of me that didn’t suffer from spending a day on the sofa watching the coronation was my new hip !!
If you can do the curtsy you are well on your way.
Deep. low and slow is the way to go.
Don’t worry about the little things ( like housework) use your energy to look after you.
I guarantee that once past the first couple of weeks you will improve in leaps and bounds.
Have a lovely day.
dte thank you, 🤬 foot is dreadful as usual!
I have to have different orthotics in both shoes; and a compression sock over a normal sock, and a strap around the compression sock!
I have to wear gardening type clogs as they are the only shoes which can room the amount of gear that is required! 🤦♀️
Only one week to go until I see Mr Q, the surgeon
Charley is right, you are doing really well.
Charley do you know if feeling really low post surgery is a common thing?
After my last knee replacement, I did very little in the way of exercises- mainly because of pain and I had to conserve my energy to look after myself as I also live on my own.
It took a couple of months before I felt close to normal.
I think you are doing very well, hang on in there!!
Will go and have a look Fanny, how is your foot today ?
