Just one thing

I enjoy Dr Michael Mosley’s Radio 4 programme ‘Just One Thing’. For those who don’t know it he suggests one thing to do to make a difference to our health and well being.

For example - an apple a day, brushing teeth twice a day...
Simple obvious yes, but good common sense and interesting.

I see a lot of wisdom here on Gransnet.

That leads me to ask have you ‘Just one thing’
to suggest to enhance health and well being?

….oh , and paramount, don’t watch those banal daytime tv shows…especially the quizzes ….they’re meant only for 10-12 year olds!

Exercise your body AND your brain …I swim three times a week….walk everyday nearly ( it through choice but don’t drive) and am learning Spanish from an Audible app.

All you need is love, oh and a little bit of dark chocolate, every day. smile

Eat 30 different plant based foods each week. Its actually very easy to do but keeping that goal in mind ensures that your gut gets the variety of nutrients that is essential for it.

If you're too ill to go out, don't dwell on it. Pick up a pen and write a lovely, encouraging note card to someone worse off than you.

Write letters instead of emails!

Hydration!
I go with the very first suggestion from rosie1959
Good for digestion, skin, all-around glow AND your brain!! (read up on dehydration and your brain function/thought process/dementia.)
People forget to drink enough water.
Cheers!

Ruby song… I found out about the tea or coffee after a meal 30 years ago when pregnant. My doctor told me about it because my iron levels were low also told me to drink fresh orange juice with meals because it helps with absorption of the vitamins and minerals in the meal. It worked for my my iron levels shot up a few weeks later.

2 litres of water per day and 1 hour brisk walk

A Spanish Doctor said to me that lifestyle attributes about 10% to your life outcomes. Your DNA dictates when and what you die of. So just be sensible but it’s only a maybe it will work. Looking at people in my life, especially my mother who lived a very healthy life and died of cancer at 58 and others who have died young. I agree with him.

Smile at other people. Be grateful for what you have.

I used to watch Michael Mosely until he and his wife touted a severe 800 calorie diet - going against the wisdom of losing weight quickly and then piling it all back and some

DH and I agreed many years ago that WE ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO MOAN ABOUT THINGS WE CANNOT CHANGE ON WEDNESDAYS!

It started as a joke, but we soon found out that it did our mental health a world of good, so we stuck to the rule.

No going on and on about the government, the weather, the price of petrol, inflation and the like.

If it is not Wednesday: SHUT UP. If it is Wednesday, a moan is permitted, but ends when the other asks, "What do you intend to do about it? Get on your knees and pray for less rain?" or simply says, "Get off your backside and do something to change the things you can change!"

Set a timer when sitting. Then move! I do this for every 30 minutes - especially when watching TV. It really helps with mobility, IMO. Also move about your home as much as you can: even just pottering about is a good idea.

Best bit of advice ever.

Urmstongran, I love brazils and walnuts, but have to restrict myself to a measly 3 Brazil nuts a day otherwise there’s a risk of too much selenium. I don’t hold back on walnuts though!

I have a thousand just one things to suggest. Which one do I choose? Without question this one thing is the single most important thing for your health and wellbeing out of all the other thousand. Most will dismiss it (as predicted and written down as such, thousands of years ago) but the wise will pay attention and consider it afresh. We were designed. We were thought of and planned and designed and made. We are not brute beats but cleverly designed in the image of the designer. And we are not just lumps of flesh. We have a spirit in us. We live forever spiritually. We never die. But WHERE we live is the key thing. Most will live for ever in darkness and torment because of their choices now. Some, a few will instead reject all the darkness and bad choices they make and choose instead to trust and have faith in the designer and creator. These people will spend eternity in a wonderful place with their creator. Food for thought. My one piece of advice is to ask the creator to save you. Say it now. He is waiting and listening. He will not reject you.

I agree with Casdon, especially if you live alone. They can help you from feeling lonely and keep you fit too.

Weight training - at any age!

Can't stand that smug self-satisfied man. I switch off immediately when is on tv. Detest the man.

Fernhillnana Wed 15-Feb-23 12:01:58

I’d just say do a bit of yoga, even if it’s only 5 minutes. Stretching and maintaining joints will keep us flexible and avoid falls and injury.

I recently read his book on this. Full of common sense ideas.
Do a couple of exercises every day. -
Squats. I do squats and risers combined.
Push ups. Not necessarily from the floor. Wall push-ups are good too.

Keeping as active as I can, while I can by doing things I enjoy. fwiw I've just started on the ZOE programme (they do free podcasts if anyone is interested, I find them a bit long winded but there's lots of interesting stuff which is backed up by research). As part of the programme, you do a range of tests and wear a blood sugar monitor for 14 days. I am rather shocked to discover that the episodes of extreme fatigue and light headedness are not a symptom of my heart condition but episodes of seriously low sugar levels (hypos). Trip to doctor required!
