I only had crutches but came down stairs on my bottom!
Couldn't use crutches on the stairs

I did the same and could not get the hang of going upstairs with crutches, it made me too nervous.
The only problem was hauling myself upright again on the landing (luckily DH was there to help).

Had this about 15 years ago. Plated and screwed. Agree the limbo waterproof cover was a godsend! I couldn't shower as ours is over the bath so too unstable. So I had baths with one leg hanging over! Seems unbelievable now but I did it successfully.
My feet were different sizes for a year or so afterwards, I went up a size in the broken one. My ironwork was left in and I've not had any trouble. I only had crutches but came down stairs on my bottom! Couldn't use crutches on the stairs. You just manage really!

I'm 16 months down the line after fracturing and dislocating my ankle. Went through elbow crutches, wheelie zimmer frame, walking sticks to name a few aids and admit the crutches were the most helpful, although it took a lot of determination to get used to them, building up walking on them every day, increasing the amount of steps taken was my only solution.
Now my back is very painful on the 'broken side' when walking but I'm pretty sure it's because I'm still not totally mobilised, I had pins and plates inserted but muscles and nerves round the ankle haven't gone back to normal plus I've put on a lot of weight - which I think's the cause of the back pain. My other ankle's come out in sympathy!

Regarding the back pain, I find having a cushion supporting that area when sitting helps and also a heat pad can help short term.

I'm interested to see how others have coped with this as I'm planning to go to my GP this week to see what she suggests.

Is your daughter using crutches? A friend with a similar injury discovered using crutches made her back incredibly painful. She was OK with sticks A perching stool in the kitchen and bathroom was useful for her. Hope your daughter is much more comfortable soon.

Thankyou cornergran. I'll tell her what you said

What is causing the pain in her back? Has she asked the doctor about it?

Thanksboth - I don;t know the cause - maybe it is just from sitting. Many years ago she had really bad back pain for several weeks and ended up having some injections in her back. Dont know whether her injury has sparked that again - we never knew the cause.

The back pain will probably be caused by uneven distribution of body weight onto the good leg and this may effect the upper body and shoulders depending on how much the person mobilises.

Oh dear I did this, fractured and dislocated.
Something called a limbo to cover the plaster when bathing/ showering.
A decent sized shoulder bag to wear pretty much all day so you’ve got those bits and bobs you want with you all the time.
Be careful on crutches I fell off twice ( irony being my job involved teaching people how to use them ) it is very easy to be complacent.
Sorry about the back ache is it related to the fracture?

The microwaveable bags filled with wheat or lavender are very reasonable and could help with her back.

When I said a swivel shower stool, I meant one that the seat rotates around enabling you to easily wash different areas of your body, the actual stool is rigid and safe, doesn’t move about.

Just clarifying.

When my DH had a similar mishap, we bought one of those swivel shower stools to enable him to sit in the shower after he had managed to hop in!

Not sure if she has a plaster cast, but if so, one of those protective leg covers is an invaluable buy.

A stable stool for the shower with handles, a protective leg covering.

An office chair with wheels is useful for whizzing around on 🙂

If her back is hurting, are her crutches at the wrong height for her?

Funnily enough my DIL had the plates and pins taken out of her ankle yesterday. She is hoping that it will be well enough to cope with Machu Picchu in October.

Is her back playing up because she is sedentary? Perhaps movement will be good?

My daughter has a broken ankle, which has been pinned. She is not allowed to put any weight on it for 6 weeks. She is finding that it's not so much her ankle, but the pain in her back which is excruciating. One friend has suggested an electric heat pad. Any other ideas?
And does anyone who has experienced something similar have any suggestions for gadgets or gismos that they found really helpful? Fortunately she has no children and can work from home.
