I think this was what I was prescribed once and yes, it made me feel worse.
When the lab results came back, it was the wrong treatment anyway.

Don't neglect a UTI though, can you phone 111 for alternative treatment?

I have been prescribed Trimethoprim for a urine infection. But I had no side effects. Medications affect people differently. I agree with Callistemon. Don’t neglect a UTI. Perhaps the Doctor will prescribe another antibiotic

someone i know has frequent UTIs, and her careworker says she does best on co-amoxiclav.
the out of hours doc was going to prescribe something else, but willingly changed it when requested.
she has responded well on 7 days of it.

Ive had many UTIs unfortunately and Trimothoprim never had a bad effect on me. Though I do know someone who was quite ill with it and obviously didnt suit her. Think its a case of different people have different reactions and you could ask your GP to make a note of this so you're not prescribed this in future. Hope you will soon be feeling better after your horrible time.

Don't wait until Monday, try to get a different antibiotic tomorrow.

I used it for years then had an anaphylactic shock reaction after one tablet, hair standing on end and a red rash creeping quite quickly down my body. DH had to take me to the local Choc Dr, we sat from 7pm until 12 pm , I can't remember a thing.
Get them to prescribe something else lately I've had a form of good old penicillin and it has relieved symptoms after two tablets. Don't wait phone 111 for advice.

The symptoms you describe are also those of a UTI, it could have been the peak of your infection. The side effects you describe are not listed on the patient leaflet.

I think fairview would know if it was the peak of the infection she would be feeling better now and the symptoms of the infection would have abated. Trimethoprim is not for everyone and as I said I must have used it for 20 years for recurrent infections and then got the anaphylactic reaction. Luckily my DH through his proffesion realised what was happening to me and I did not get a blocked airway which you can.

I am very allergic to Trimethoprim and have it listed as an allergy. I was prescribed 6 but only took 2 x 200mg tablets. Hands red and swollen as if burnt on a hot plate. Extreme nausea and exhaustion for 2 days. Slight soreness corner of mouth and slight thrush appeared two days later.

Having said that, we are all different and most people will be fine. Allergies are a very individual response.

Just to add, for UTI I have been given mostly Nitrofurantoin 100mg (6 tablets). Then when I saw a consultant he gave me Ciprofloxacin 500mg to take one twice a day for a week. These were followed by Nitrofurantoin 100mg but only one every night for 3 months.

I’ve been given Nitrofurantoin for UTI’s for quite a while but recently found that they don’t help. Apparently I’ve become immune to them. Such a shame, I’ve no idea what I’ll take next time.

My GP recommended d-mannose for UTI infection. It’s not available on the NHS but it’s worth every penny. Never had a UTI since the first dose but always keep it in the medicine cabinet just in case.

I’ve used Trimethoprim without any side effects but another medicine I was given made my asthma symptoms so bad I had to stop taking it. Penicillin is good for UTIs but not for me because I had a severe allergic reaction to it several years ago.
I use Ovestin which is a low dose HRT product for vaginal application. It’s stopped me having regular UTIs. You use it 2/3 times a week. Because it’s used locally it doesn’t have any of the side effects or health concerns the pills or patches have. It’s also a much lower dose.

That’s the medicine Dollymixtures, Nitrofurantoin, I’d forgotten it’s name. It’s a first line medicine for UTIs but I can’t take it because it gives me serious asthma symptoms. Apparently it’s well tolerated by most people, but my doctor said it can cause severe coughing and asthmatic symptoms in some people.

I had anaphylactic shock after only one tablet of Trimethroprim for a UTI.
I had the same reaction to Septrin, our GP did not check but said she doubted it had similar if not the same ingredients. It did.

A friend's husband who has a permanent catheter and was getting frequent infections, takes D-Mannose all the time and hasn't had an infection since.

I was prescribed that for a UTI, and had the most dreadful allergic reaction. It was Christmas Eve so I phoned 111. Excellent doctor who prescribed something else which I collected within an hour from my local A&E.

I hope the GP sent a urine specimen to the lab so he will know which antibiotic is the right one.

I am extremely allergic to that, luckily I was in hospital when I was given a dose.
The catheter and drip were put back in very quickly!

Theexwife..true my side effects aren't shown on the side effects list...but just now I looked up trimethoprim reviews and I'm not alone re how they made me feel

I’m highly allergic to Trimethoprim. I took it once years ago for a UTI and came out in scarlet blotches everywhere. Over about three weeks, they faded to purple, then to blue. I resembles a rainbow coloured giraffe. Felt terrible too. Not a good look. So it’s now on my list to avoid.
