Neck ache for over a month

I’ve been waking up with neck ache recently and it comes back through the day. It feels like an ache deep inside at the very middle of the back of the neck on the hairline.
Could it be my two pillows are too big? I’ve tried using just one but my neck feels too arched and exposed.
I usually sleep on my back to start then, if I wake completely in the night, swap onto my side.
Any ideas gratefully received, I'm probably missing something obvious!

I have cervical spondylosis and the symptoms are like those you describe. I often wear a collar in bed at night.
Perhaps speak to your your GP. Here in Glasgow, you can now self refer to an NHS physio, for things like this.

Thank you so much Marydoll I will look into those suggestions

It's wise to speak to your GP first, but I often wake up with a very stiff and aching neck because pillows are not supporting my neck. Last week, in great discomfort, I bought a 'Groove' pillow - not sure if we are allowed to advertise on this site, but in three days the pain was gone. The pillow is good for back and side sleepers, and is so comfortable.

I had this problem years ago. A physio suggested I use 2 feather pillows and bingo the problem disappeared! Now it has returned and I'm currently trying different thickness pillows and it seems the pain is lessened by using just one pillow now. I am wondering about trying this. www.groovepillows.co.uk It has very good reviews! I'm sure its just a question of finding the right set up, pillow wise to ease any discomfort.

I'm afraid the groove pillow doesn't work for me unfortunately. I found it very uncomfortable. I found the GX pillow that was advertised widely for a while very comfortable but it became too flat after a few months. My pillow research continues!

Sorry to hear that Claretjan - the wretched neck pain affects every move you make, don't you find? The Groove pillow seemed a good idea because most people don't lie in one position, moving from back to side, and the pillow supports both sleeping positions. Good luck with your search. (I did find at one point that a small rolled up towel under my neck helped.)

A tip I picked up from gransnet has helped me with my neck pain.
Take a pillow, without pillow case etc.
Tie the pillow firmly in the middle, so that it resembles a butterfly.
Cover with pillow protector etc.
This, for me, forms a cradle for my neck and is very comfortable to sleep on. This works for sleeping on either side or on the back.
