Hip pain

I had an xray in March because of hip pain but was told that I had normal wear and tear - nothing to worry about. It became worse and I saw a nurse at the surgery (getting a GP appointment is very rare). He said that I had bursitis and made an appointment with a physiotherapist at the surgery for a steroid injection.
I was very unsure about this as I had a form of non-contagious TB (NTM) which feeds on steroids. Luckily she examined me very carefully and said it was a problem with my glute muscle, not my bursa. She recommended that I pay for a private physio which I have done.
I have read up on the causes and inactivity and sitting too much was probably the cause of mine. I was in lockdown during Covid and so didn't get as much exercise as usual.
Any advice from wise grans please? Coming downstairs in the morning is an adventure!

Keep up with the exercises the physio gives you, and I need to practise what I preach 🤣

Liz I have similar things going on. I agree keep at the exercises, after I have done them I sit with a hot water bottle on my back for five minutes. A wheat bag would probably be safer. My physio said I had probably walked too much!! All these steps are not necessarily meant for late seventies
I hope it eases up for you soon

I had the same problem - bursitis. GP recommend either physio , steroid injection or pain killers and time. I had already had the pain for a long time ( don't like going to GPs) He assured me the pain would eventually go ,( and it did ) I opted for time and ibuprofen. The staircase was a nightmare - one step at a time, getting in and out of the car was difficult too. However be warned! while the hip was still causing me trouble we went away for a weeks holiday. Our apartment had a very low loo and I had difficulty getting up! My left hip was painful so I put extra weight on my right leg and pulled something, left hip is recovered but I compromised my right leg - still causing me pain - muscle pain . Been months now so a trip to GP again I think. I don't repair very well as I age !!

Thank you ladies. We are off to India in three weeks so I have got to make an improvement! The physio has given me some advice about swimming and exercise on holiday.

A TENS machine helped me. Enjoy India, l loved it.

Liz46, I had an X-ray last January which like yours, confirmed the normal wear and tear in a woman my age.
My physio is using acupuncture which is helping. I have inflammatory arthritis, the physio is part of the specialist rheumatology team. She said research confirms acupuncture helps with these bursa/glute problems
Walking helps tho not pain free
My doctor said steroid Jabs don’t always work and research shows any positive effects wear off within 3 minths

Hello liz we have a long standing hip and knee thread which rarely gets into the active list but can be found in the health forum. It has a lot of advice and support from many people with varied experiences of hip surgery which may help.
I had a new hip 18 months ago which is fine now but had a guided steroid injection before the surgery which actually made my pain much worse, so for me, it didn’t work. Maybe I was unlucky but if you are going to India it may help you.
Hope you have a lovely holiday.

Liz46 - wish I was coming with you. Hope you are touring Kerala as well - ‘God’s own country’…

Thank you all for your advice which I am reading carefully.

CrazyH, we are going to a lovely hotel in South Goa. We have been there before and have emailed them asking for a ground floor room.

I’m sorry that we did not get around to going to Kerala. We meant to but I think we have left it too late as this is probably our last long haul holiday.

Yes we liked Kerala which is interesting with beautiful scenery. It’s probably one of the wealthier regions in India so though poor not as distressingly poor as most other places.

Liz46 - would be very grateful if you could share which hotel you're going too. Keen to go to Goa. Thx

Have a look on TripAdvisor - The Heritage Village Club, South Goa. We have been there before. It is a smallish hotel with live entertainment and good food. There is a good beach which is lovely for walks but I don’t think it is totally safe for swimming.

There is a nearby village but it is generally quiet.

As I know from experience all Physios are not created equal. Having seen three physios ( private ) to very little avail the fourth was fantastic I had two hip replacements following steroid myopathy so was really out of alignment.

You are right Gwyllt but I have confidence in the one that I am paying now. She comes very highly recommended from friends that I trust.

Really glad you have found a good one. Stick with them worth their weight in gold. I was not implying anything about the one you have I have met some horrors over the years
Hope things improve
